Bring on the HD!

I think the current size is fine, definitely dont want it any smaller but wouldn't want it any bigger than 3.7/3.8 inch as that would make the device too big. definitely needs a higher res though, that way i can shut my dad up hu has a HTC HD!!!

What you guys are forgetting is that although the Droid, Nexus, And incredible have a bigger screen on paper, the width of the iPhone's screen is bigger. Noticeably bigger, not to mention much more responsive, which means wider keyboard, and better landscape apps.

I have used all of these phones, besides the incredible for some time, and the iPhone is still easiest to type on in terms of size of the screen, and the overall sensitivity of the screen.

I agree that the extra width is nice for the keyboard. I'm even really okay with the screen size to be honest. What I'm not okay with is the screen getting smaller.

Their is no way in hell they will make the screen size smaller.

Apple will never ever do that.

Not only will they most likely continue with the same design and screen size, but with all these phones coming out with much bigger screens, they will not make a smaller screen.

And I agree, the scree size is nice, although the EVO will have a huge screen, the smoothness and simplicity on the new iPhone will be cool.

Gizmodo begs to differ. And they've actually handled the device. Or a prototype anyway. It had a newer, high res screen, and they said the screen was slightly smaller.

I just cant see that happening, do you honstly think steve jobs is going to stand in front of all these people and say, although we have made three phones with 3.5 inch screens.

we have made one with a 960*480 or what ever it is screen resolution.....But with a smaller screen?

The final next gen iPhone will not have a smaller screen, their is no chance.

I think he'd put up a slide with the DPI and the resolution, and not say the actual screen width. He'd then say the screen is so much nicer, that they've got the best DPI in the industry, etc etc and then move on. The actual dimensions of the screen would come out 2 hours later once all the tech blogs got their hands on the device.

He's not going to say anything about the screen size if it is smaller. He's going to talk about how it has a great 960x640 resolution and that it has a gorgeous screen.

Let's take a look at the iPhone 3GS screen VS the iPhone 4G screen.

Now, can any of you honestly say you can see a difference? Clearly Apple wouldn't have put a smaller screen into the iPhone if it was in any way noticeable. It's not even noticeable when you know it's smaller. The
resolution of the next iPhone is set to beat any of the phones on the market right now.

I'll take a tiny bit smaller screen for great resolution and better battery life.

Even better comparison:

I can't really see a size difference. That's why I was skeptical at first about the smaller size as well.

I am definitely satisfied with the size of the iPhone now. Perfect phone size, for a touch screen this is really the only size that makes sense. Anything bigger then 3.7 seems to be a bit borderline to me. I'm confident that apple wouldn't make anything like 4.3" like the Evo I could almost consider that a tablet. Almost seems like it would be uncomfortable to even have that in you're pocket.

A couple things to keep in mind here..

The 3G/3GS have a bezel and inside that bezel is a small rubber gasket and beyond that is the screen itself. It's all really small, but it adds to the "visual" width of the screen.

The 4G does not have a bezel so things might look different.

I see there might be a height difference, however not much. The screen appears to be the same exact size as before.

Seeing i use my phone with two hands often now, bigger screen would be better.

Hell the Evo 4G is a TINY bit larger than an iPhone. All screen.

On another note, look how comically large that keyboard is haha.

A few other comparision shots:

I skimmed this thread, so maybe someone said it already, but according to gizmodo it's fractionally smaller. Perhaps they just got rid of the 1-2mm boarder around the screen. So the screen looks smaller, but viewable size is actually the same, if that makes sense.

The border can't be more than a millimeter. For reference, the top bar with the time and battery percentage is 3 millimeters.

It would be really nice if the screen only seemed smaller due to design changes and the actual LCD itself was really no smaller.

Why would Apple go BACKWARDS and make the screen smaller? If they did, they are stupid. You don't go BACKWARDS. You go FORWARDS.

The screen is the same size. The bezel/case or something around it is not. Either that or it's an "optical" illusion from the way the pictures are or design.

Sorry, I meant that the boarder probably equates to 1-2 mm of screen size. Ie, if they removed the boarder, the screen would seem 1-2 mm smaller.

I suspect this is the case, and not that the viewable screen is smaller than on the current phones.

Yup

To everything everyone has replied... THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID :D... and yeah I wish the screen was a tad bigger like the EVO
