i ordered the base, but just disappointed how they cheaped out on the Penryn chips thats my real disappointment..they could've given the three TOP penryns for the MBPs in consecutive order from best to least with most exp to lease expensive. Downgrading the L2 cache is bull, and i dont have the money to spend another 500

even if its for 512 vram, 6mb L@ cache, faster processor...

by the way, i was one of those who paid the restocking fee to return my old base MBP...

i got for 290$:
-double the VRAM
-80 more gb HDD space
- 7200 RPM compared to 5400
- .2 faster ghz processor (my d-link modem at my house only goes up to 2.4 ghz, i don't know how that works but maybe i maxed that out?)
- Cooler laptop with more battery life

and the lower l2 cache by 3mb of what i expected doesn't negate all that, and the 1mb from my old model - my new laptop WILL be faster

by the way, next laptops available in June? hahaha - not returning this time
i bet more towards the end of the summer, a case rediesgn would make this one out of date but whatevvvv - i can't see them upgrading to montevina that quick...they were behind on the penyrn and it's going to be the same for this

3) if gamers are waiting in the Mac line for updates they are waiting in the wrong line. They should probably be over in the Alienware or Falcon Northwest line.

4) Its a remote. A remote should never be a deciding factor in choosing a brand of computer.

Yeah, Alienware=the only PC worth buying.

Why would anybody worry about a remote that no one ever uses?
(Oh yeah its 19 frickin dollars. c'mon I have spent more on one pare of Boxers!!!

I did not set my expectations so high, so I am happy with the trackpad, 2.6GHz and 17" LED hi res options. Of course, I'm kinda biased since I am upgrading from a G4 IMac thats about to go to the knackers yard
Good times :)

I was more relieved than anything else. I was HOPING for a nice redesign, better res screens, and a few other things. Problem was I decided to get an IBM for $1500 that utterly destroys a fully loaded MBP spec wise last week and didn't wanna look stupid. I'm hoping for a nice design update when Montevina is released. Maybe a WWDC release time.

link to IBM specs?

Disappointed I am not.

For the $, the new model has the following advantages over the last revision.
+ 0.1ghz cpu speed
+ 2mb L2 cache
+ 256 mb gpu memory
+ 50GB storage

The cost of the new 15" 2.5GHZ w/ 200Gb 7200 rpm drive checkouts to be nearly the same as the last revision 2.4GHZ with 200GB 7200 rpm drive, when ordered from the online Apple store. The benefits that I have received from waiting for the last 18 months to buy a MBP have been very satisfying. I nearly bought one at the start of this quarter, but I decided to wait till I couldn't function without buying one. It has been a Good Update, though we all know that a major update is only nTuesdays away :D, I am still very satisfied with this update.

plus the last of a kind is something to behold, it will forever represent the standards of it's creators at this point in time, attesting to the transitional thinking integrated in to it's conception and as final punctuation of phase change.

Off topic, but need opinions

Well so I have a couple questions to ask for everyone's opinion.

background: I'm 17 and will be getting a Macbook Pro as a graduation/birthday/own funds present. I plan on using it for a good 4 years through college. Now to my 2 questions:

1. How big of a step is 256 graphics to 512. If I want to game, is it really worth $500, because that's practically the only difference. I'm not going to be a hardcore gamer, but I'd like to be able to buy a game 3 years down the line and still play it, not necessarily on best graphics, but at least not running slugishly. I'll probably run Halo 2, battlefield 2142, half life 2, maybe crisis (about as high end of a game I'd ever run), etc. Is 512 really worth the extra $500 if I'm not a hardcore gamer?

2. Now or Montevina? Should i get one in a month when I can, or wait for this summer to get the Montevina update. I've heard the speeds not going to be much better and I know the processor will still be penryn, just a platform change. But does anyone see a new graphics card like say the 8800M being in it? or will it probably just be a 8600/8700 again. I thought about waiting too, to see what the probably eminent redesign will be. I LOVE the current design, but what if they make it thinner and add a magnetic latch??? However, the current design has almost all the bugs worked out, whereas a new design will have kinks to work out... So its a hard decision. Any input from you guys would be awesome. thanks. As of now, I'm leaning towards buying one in a month.

If you can wait, do it. They will be thinner and most likely have Blu-ray. At least according to macrumors.com

and if you were going to by now yes the 512 is worth it.

Since you're anticipating owning it for several years, I would lean towards the 512 card.

Even though the extra $500 might be a little painful right now, I think it is worth it to have a top of the line because then you own a substantial machine for all that time and there is no room for regret in not getting the next model up.

I'm not a vRam expert, but I would look at gaming and other benchmarks for the 2 cards (256 & 512) over the next month before you decide.

I got the base model, because the most intensive game I play is halo, but the 512 will probably get you around 5 more fps although I'm not entirely sure.

I doubt Apple will be in any rush with Blu-Ray. It clearly has great interest in frustrating the growth of Blu-Ray as it has far more to win in ensuring that digital downloads are the true next-gen format.

You've got to be kidding me. Digital downloads as the "true next-gen format"? Not in the next 10 years. I would kill myself waiting for a 25gb download to complete, even if DSL speeds increased by 10x from where they are today. And there are some of us who would like to have a physical copy of our movies. Movies aren't like music, in music you want convenient access, movies it doesn't really matter. No one watches 10 movies a day.

If Apple really does intend to frustrate Blu-Ray's growth, it's going to find itself being the next Toshiba.

Disappointed enough to not buy!

No Blu-Ray Option

No 3G Built In

No Case Redesign

Change name back to PowerBook

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD IS IT 2008 YET?

lol, it was a great pudate considering the price drop.

Welcome to the UK. Please leave expectations of a price drop on the way in.

Not a penny change in price here.

Name me one laptop that has all that with a 1 inch profile and 15 in screen for around $2k.

I don't CARE that my MBP is 1 inch thin. I really really don't. Of everything about this machine, it's the 'feature' I simply don't give a damn about it. If it was another half inch thicker - I wouldn't care. it would be no harder to move around. This obsession with 'thin' is just a pointless bragging right.

At 'new' price, the MBP is an insult. I wouldn't dream of spending £1600 on one - it's totally unjustifiable as a price. Thank god they offer reasonable prices on refurb stock, or I'd still be using a Dell.

We won't see blu-ray in MBP until we see it in the Mac Pro.

And, seeing as they haven't gotten it there yet, so, nice waiting.

I can't wait to get my new Penryn. It's been more than worth the wait.

Available for more than 12 months. : http://www.mcetech.com/blu-ray/

And available in a Sony laptop that costs half as much as the £1600 MBP.

The MBP is a premium product with a premium price. You would have to be a monumentally blinkered Apple fanatic to not admit that they are dragging their feet.

From my previous posts, you can clearly see I'm not just another sheep from the herd.

But on this point, I go with Mac. Put yourself in Steve Job's position : you have a format war going on ; blu-ray and hd dvd drives are very expensive at the moment, so are the discs themselves ; you have a vast majority of users who actually don't need a dvd collection, but prefer renting movies.

= you don't put a BR drive in your machines.

= you wait to see where the market is going to go, if the whole BR system is going to flop after all

Put yourself in Steve Job's position

I actually find it near impossible to understand that mans thoughts processes. Half the time he's a genius, half the time he makes decisions that just defy all logic. Mac's are supposed to be the best content creativity platform - but with the complete absence of any HD format available from Apple, (sorry, downloads simply do not count), you can not describe a MP or MBP as a premium content creativity platform.

Blu-ray! HA!

What is it with this obsession with Blu-ray???? Its a freakin 15" screen! You'll never tell the difference between a normal movie and a HD one on a laptop! And if you want the blu-ray drive for writing (25 gb storage on one side/50 on two) think how freakin LONG it would take to write a 25 gb blu-ray disk at 4x (recommended speed)!!! WOW! Honestly folks, blu-ray is pointless on a laptop!

Well if apple created the Blu Ray format they would charge a lot less...and the format war has been over for about a week. I cant see people really buying mac's unless they want the software/OS...no one can dispute the hardware is superior to most pc laptops for the price.
