Yeah. I avoid stopping anything at 69. I'll go at least to 70 or stop at 68. I'm a Chicago Cubs fan. 'Nuff said. ;)

Of course, they've got everything covered except 7 and 8, but that was last century.

Happy Friday the 13th!

Did you know that the 13th of the month is more likely to be on a Friday than on any other day of the week? Numerologists might find that to be significant, but I think it's just a nice coincidence.

Show me a rabid sports fan who isn't superstitious and I'll show you a sports fan isn't fanatical enough to be called a rabid sports fan.:D

The only reason my Rockets lost to Golden State was because I was out of town and couldn't sit in my lucky chair. Chris Paul being out with an injury was just a coincidence, a coincidence. My not sitting in my lucky chair was the difference.:p

I'm not, however, superstitious at all.

Not really superstitious, but I do have certain habits, or maybe rather certain small "rituals" I perform before doing certain things. I don't really expect anything out of the ordinary to happen because of them, but they're just something that I happen to do. For who knows why.

Like when the topic of superstition comes up, I can't not link the song by Stevie Wonder. So here goes.

I missed this thread 8 years ago, but I looked up the definition.

Belief in supernatural beings? Would that include spirits or ghosts? I don’t approach a level of belief, but I am on the look out for them as a means of personal experience and possibly truth and my leaning towards the odds of a spiritual existence.

Supernatiinal causation as if there are strings tugging at us? Hmm, it’s possible. I believe in luck only as a result of percentages, and Karma is often causal, as in cause and effect, if you do enough bad things in your life odds are something bad in return may happen to you. But I like the idea of Karma, a boomerang effect that eventually catches up with you. And I have prayed for an outcome, but don’t ask me to whom. :)

su·per·sti·tion
ˌso͞opərˈstiSH(ə)n/
noun
  1. excessively credulous belief in and reverence for supernatural beings.
"he dismissed the ghost stories as mere superstition"
synonyms: unfounded belief, credulity, fallacy, delusion, illusion; More
    • a widely held but unjustified belief in supernatural causation leading to certain consequences of an action or event, or a practice based on such a belief.

Happy Friday the 13th!

Did you know that the 13th of the month is more likely to be on a Friday than on any other day of the week?

Surprisingly that appears to be true, but it's only *very* slightly more likely. I just ran every date from 0000-01-01 to 9994-5-11 (for an idealised Gregorian calendar), and checked what day of the week the 13th of the month was. Counts are:
Mon:17112
Tue: 17114
Wed:17165
Thu: 17088
Fri: 17189
Sat: 17088
Sun: 17165

So probability any given random 13th of the month is on a Friday is 0.1433603 and the least likely (Thursday, oddly) is 0.14249381. So in an average year we would expect to see Thursday the 13th 1.71 time and Friday the 13th 1.72 times.

(Though my maths could be way off, so happy to be corrected :))

Nope, not superstitious much. When competing I had a certain routine though. That might qualify as superstitious I suppose.

It's interesting that superstitious habits that we might not actually believe in still manage to become social customs. How often do people knock on wood or cross their fingers while talking to other people, to demonstrate the luck they hope they'll have? I've seen it plenty of times. Not to mention throwing coins in the wishing well or avoiding stepping on sidewalk cracks, which don't have much science behind them either.

Are you superstitious? If so how.

I don't consider myself superstitious, yet I knock wood on things, and I noticed that I was worried that I may jinxed something when I started to talk about it.

Yeah, that's silly, and its not logical, but still...

So does anyone else have superstitions?

sometimes! :) Back in the days when I did my MCSE certification, I listened to a specific IronMaiden song before going to my exam. I never took a chance and I listened to the same exact song for the other 5 exams too. I did another certification and repeated the same ritual.

UM i won't get out of bed unless one of the numbers is even

like 6:10am, or 6:20 won't get out of bed if it is like 6:19 etc
toolbox hasn't been seen in these forums since 2012. It's probably because he/she made post #13 in this thread, and has had bad luck ever since.
