except for Arrested Development. :)

Arrested comes close, but even the "straight man" Dave had his quirks and his character would do things to complicate the plot.

Michael rarely ever did anything but play straight man.

I have to agree. When I set aside an hour of my life to watch one of his shows on HBO or Showtime, the audience was huge, and more like a concert than a comic set. I sat and watched, hoping that at some point, I would at least chuckle. The audience was roaring with laughter, and women were screaming their affection for him. I lasted about twenty minutes, and then decided to read a book.

As far as the author's comments on his favorite comedians, I have no beef. Comedy is somewhat subjective, and not all comedians can span wide appeal. Many, like Dane, have their audiences that tend to be of a certain age group. I happen to prefer watching the older comedians, such as George Carlin, Richard Pryor, and Steven Wright. Robin Williams and Whoopi Goldberg also were favorites at some point. And like another member mentioned, I prefer britcoms, as that's what I watched growing up. But I give due props to anyone who can make me belly laugh. It's an undeniable talent that I appreciate in life, as I love to laugh.

I'm from Boston and I can't stand his sorry ass either..Never found him the least bit funny..Would love to send him on a scenic tour of Cape Cod with Teddy Kennedy....

Maybe the Sox can sign him to a 1 day contract like the yanks did with billy crystal so he can get pegged in the ass.

I'll be honest and say I've listened to him and find some of his stuff funny, but it's not something I listen to repeatedly. I am more into Gaffigan, Martin, and Black right now.

Finally! I thought I'd never find another person who likes that show (NewsRadio). Truly it was the king of comedies in the 90s.
Well, you found another one. I think NewsRadio was hilarious. The character of Jimmy James alone is a lunatic.

For pete's sake the show made Andy Dick funny. There aren't enough people on Earth to deliver the amount of praise earned by a writer that can do that.
Amen, brother. That show was the one and only time I ever found Andy Dick amusing.

Now News Radio, that was a sitcom. Only (non-British) sitcom I've ever bothered to buy on DVD.
Gotta agree. Besides the Honeymooners, the only sitcom I own on DVD.

As far as Dane Cook, it is his delivery. His jokes aren't funny. If you don't watch him you probably won't laugh. Unlike someone like Mitch Hedberg, Steven Wright, Chris Rock, or George Carlin. He's not the end of comedy though, comedy survived Gallagher.

I can see why people don't like Dane Cook -- it's just his delivery. The way he repeats stuff over and over to accentuate things can be kind of obnoxious. Be that as it may, he makes me laugh, and I'm no frat boy either. My sister is really into him and she's bought me a couple of his CDs, and he is a pretty funny guy.

I'm a bit late to the party on this thread but I'm a pretty big fan of Dane and his comedy. I agree with the critics though that he is loud, over the top, obnoxious, etc. To me its just part of the act and for however long its lasts it entertains me. Same deal with Mike Bay and Transformers; lots of hate gets thrown his way but if you just suspend belief for 2 hours and think of it as mindless summer action popcorn movie fun its quite enjoyable.

He is like Tori Spelling. They get all sorts of tv time and media coverage for no reason I can think of. Maybe they have photos of important people in bad situations.

I turned on Cook and was amazed at how bad he was, after all the build-up. I was ready for jokes and laughter, but was only oddly embarrassed for him at first, but then realized he is just a jerk and didn't feel sorry for him. Some people like Jerry Lewis and think his retarded act is funny.

i find dane cook's performance to be funny, not really his jokes. its the delivery, etc... but after about 15 minutes i have had enough.

he is kind of akin to dennis wolfberg, who was an amazing comic due partially to his jokes but a lot because of his delivery.

I agree, for just about all comedians. I have no idea why they sell audio CDs of their acts. Makes no sense to me.
