iPhone? How is THAT different from the iPhone? It has a relatively odd spot for a camera and in landscape mode you have to press a screen with no tactile feel. I think a camera on a MP3 player is strange and generally not needed with the fact that most phones have good camera and it will surely increase the cost of the iPod. I hope they offer a model sans the camera for less as I could not justify spending even $15 extra dollars for an addition that will not ONCE be used by me or my wife - or even my children.

D

You don't know how much of a profit Apple makes on the nano. It could be cheap to produce - which it most likely is - so that the addition of a camera may be nothing more than a slight cut into their profit off the device.

I could see MP3 players getting cameras. The whole issue, though, is that cameras are becoming very ubiquitous and potentially too common on devices now.

Why? Do we need another crappy camera? If you buy one of these you'll doubtless have a mobile phone which will have a camera too.

All it will do is prevent people working in camera sensitive environments (defence, aerospace etc) owning one, rather than persuading people to get one.

A fairly cheap music/video device... with the added bonus of a (hopefully - but probably, given recent rumors) video camera with enough capacity to make it all worthwhile as a holiday/ vacation toy?

Not a bad idea for your 'other' iPod...

I'd buy one.

Sometimes I wonder if these rumors are based in truth or are deliberately put out there to get Apple's competitors scrambling. MS will now be distracted into spending all kinds of time and money trying to figure out how to put a camera into the next Zune...

Well it's in the logical place for a camera on the nano if you hold it in landscape mode (the back-of-nano image is rather poor, it would have been better to flip the nano horizontally instead of vertically when creating the mock-up) and your right thumb would be on the wheel to adjust zoom and take the image.

However it would be a very small camera unit to fit in the ~3mm internal thickness of the nano there. Optical zoom seems unlikely, as with camera phones. I expect it would be a cheap ~2mp sensor.

I can understand a camera on the iPod touch. Not really on the nano, still if they can add it for a dollar or two, and it works well, then why not - apart from it breaking Apple's rules about device functionality (usability over features).

What in the world is a 1:5:1 screen ratio? Is Apple coming out with a 3-D screen, or what?

I think it meant 1.5:1

As with a screen resolution like 480x320.

If it is 480x320 (at a very high resolution - OLED maybe), then it suggests the nano is moving to the iPhone OS X, albeit a version that is altered to use a click wheel instead of a touch screen.

However it is probably 360x240.

I see it happening so many devices are adding cameras to them and so many cameras are adding mp3 functionality to them. It's starting to become common place kind of like the web cam on laptops.

Do we really need a camera on every single mobile device? Cameras everywhere...why? Who doesn't have a cellphone with a camera built-in, already? Cellphones are already banned in locker rooms and gyms because of the camera. Are we not going to be able to have music players there now because those have cameras in them, as well? Most people buy a Nano to play music while running or working out (and having a screen to see what you're listening to) or simply to just to have a "cheaper" iPod. If you want a camera, get an iPod Touch (which will likely and appropriately have one, in the next revision)....or use your camera phone. The Nano does not need a camera.

If they do add one, Apple had better not jack up the price because of it or at least have an option to buy one with or without the camera.

Hmmm...maybe the idea is that eventually if everything has a camera there will never be a missed opportunity/scandal/meaningless event photographed. Like you go into your bag to find your dslr, not there, go for the point and shoot, not there, go for the cell phone, not there, ipod touch, not there, ipod nano, not there, tube of lipstick--oh thank god they build cameras into tubes of lipstick now. How on earth did I forget all my other camera enabled devices?

I too am uncomfortable with the idea of jack of all trades convergence, which is why I like the iPhone/iPod touch, as they seem to be a king of all (is that how that expression goes?).

Held in landscape, the camera is in the top-right corner, just where it should be, but really anywhere would stand a good chance of being blocked: the nano is just so small. So... when you see your finger in the window, move it :)

A camera in a nano would be a weird idea, but kinda cool if true. With some video capability (even if poor quality) it could be very handy on the spur of the moment.

If true (and I repeat: weird!) it means a camera in the Touch is a near certainty, which would be great.

For a long while I was using a Nokia 3310 alongside an iPod 5.5G, PSP, DS etc. So no, it's not doubtless you'll have a phone with a camera.

I'd probably use it. Would I use it over my EOS, no. Would I use it when I only carry my iPod and phone, yes. It'd be a nice secondary feature for me.

Honestly, I think that this is a poor photoshop job and probably not based on what might be an actual production model as the camera's in the wrong place. That's all I want to say about that.

I can understand the placement of the lens for use in "landscape mode."
However, wouldn't the lens in that position be quite susceptible to finger/hand smudges when the nano is being used for music?

Held in landscape, the camera is in the top-right corner...

Thank you, I thought I was the only one that noticed that.

People, If you hold the nano in the way that it is pictured on the top picture, than the camera will be at the top; the bottom picture is upside down of how it would appear to those whose picture is being taken. Think about it.

Cameras not allowed!

Does this mean that schools, public gyms, etc. will stop allowing iPod Nanos in their locker rooms?

Seeing an iPod being carried in/out of a locker room seems to be an extremely common example of their use.

Major lose.

ok, just so everyone can see, if it were being held in landscape with the click wheel on the right, than this is what it would look like from the perspective of the person whose picture is being taken: The camera is on top, not on bottom.

Don't you see what's going on here!? This man is dieing!!

I mean, Apple is getting into the camera business!

It's not an iPod with a camera, it's a camera with an iPod in it!

I'm not being serious at all!!
