not too sure about the position of the camera. i really don't see the point of a camera on a nano anyways

How can you not see the point? Buy and iPod nano get a digital camera free. There is a good point. What teen wouldn't want that?

I think this is a great idea and will sell tons and tons of nanos and bring the product more inline with the iPhone and iPod Touch. I don't know about the lens placement in that pic though.

So I get that it could work, given you only take pics while holding the iPod in landscape, but there's no button to press to actually take the picture! You'd think the artist who rendered this would have put in a little button - pressing the click-wheel while holding it in landscape would be crazy.

Um I can promise you that you will press the center button to take pics which is beyond logical and obvious and easy. Why do you people make everything so complicated lol? You really think Apple would add another button???

yeah i totally see that as the new nano. makes sense on all angles including where the camera is. think about it people prefer landscape many times over portrait....

Remember that the nano has an accelerometer now. Landscape will probably be preferred, but I'm very sure you will be able to rotate whatever way you want.

Why are there so many people in here that think this will never happen? It makes ABSOLUTE PERFECT SENSE. Why wouldn't Apple do this? I think it is a no brainer, and it won't increase the price. Do you know how cheap those little cameras are?

Guess what people??? I will lay it out right now... Not only will the nano get a camera, but after that it will also shoot video!!! And after that it will get a multi-touch screen and basically disappear and become an iPod Touch Mini or whatever you wanna call it. It is all very logical and obvious.

In the future we will all have a mobile device that is a phone, an iPod, a camera, an internet device, a gps, a computer, all in one........ Oh wait, Apple already started this, it is called the iPhone! And they will be merging their other products into this ecosystem. It is just a matter of time and how many steps along the way.

I couldn't agree more- i can defiantly see this happening. Perhaps the camera first, then one that combines a touch screen with the click wheel and finally an ipod touch nano.

So the question is: is the iPod classic end of life`d?
It seems to be getting less and less attention lately...

Why does a nano need a camera? I suppose it doesn't matter unless Apple raises the cost significantly.

It's more likely the that the iPod touch will get the camera as that's just another part it can share with the iPhone.

Two words: Planned Obsolescence

This already looks like something obsolete. Just jump ahead already and release the touch nano. It's destined to happen. But no... instead we must wait for Apple to milk the click-wheel a short while longer. Without a touch screen it's going to be disconnected from the possibilities the internet brings. I doubt they would add WiFi to any iPod with a click-wheel. A static focused camera on a nano with no instant sharing capabilities sounds stupid. Even a lot of still cameras these days have WiFi built in or obtainable through an EyeFi SD card. This is a bogus rumor unless Apple has a genius interface for sharing photos on the nano.

Same article mentions 6 iPhone SKUs with 2 for enhanced 3G.

Which countries would benefit from enhanced 3G?

Here (Australia) we've got 21Mbit 3G HSPA+ with 42Mbit being switched on before the end of the year. No phones support HSPA+ yet, just modems.

However, I can't see Apple offering a HSPA+ iPhone in 2009. Too few networks support it, so it will be wasted in most phones, plus the early baseband chips will use more battery.

The network connection isn't really the slow part of the iphone, it's the CPU, and flash. HSPA+ will give more capacity to the network however, which is important if you want to see apps like Slingplayer over 3G.

I think the iPhone will be 7.2Mbit HSDPA/2Mbit HSUPA in 2009 (Infineon X-Gold 618)

This will work in China too on China Unicom's new network that has just gone live. The firmware seems to disable the wifi on phones activated in China, perhaps permanently. I would think the hardware is there still though. It's done the same way the camera shutter sound is locked on if you activate the iPhone in Japan.

HSPA+ makes sense in 2010 and 2011
and maybe an LTE iPhone in 2012, 2013
LTE-Advanced in 2014 at the earliest....

I hope the click wheel doesn't go away; as nice as a touch screen is, the click wheel is still better for a music-focused product IMO.

The biggest problem I have with this rumor is how utterly useless such a device would be... If you've got an iPod, then your phone is useless for music etc, which means that your taking your phone with you everywhere too... And pretty much every single phone sold these days has a camera in it...

Why would Apple put up the price of making (and ultimately selling) something this useless?? It would be a crappy camera, one which definitely wouldn't compare to the 3-10MP cameras in phones, and would clutter the design.

A camera in the iPod touch is far more likely, especially with the news of the Zune HD. the touch needs a really strong selling point if it wants to beat all the competition that's been coming out recently, a decent camera (like the 3.2MP rumored to be going in the next iPhone) might just do it... Especially if it offered some sort of sat nav app, and could be used with geotagging...

This nano thing is a mock up or just a fake. It doesn't seem like it would get past a design review.

I doubt it, as flash still can't touch even 1.8" HDDs in price/ GB. However, the weird thing is, there hasn't been any manufacturer I know of that has announced >120 GB slim 1.8" Hard Drives. Someone tell me if there is one which isn't 8mm.

iLounge were right on the money last time so I trust them this time.

1. Believe it or not there is still a large number of people that don't have cell phones of any type.
2. Many work places forbid cell phones, so yeah even today there are people without cell phone cameras.
3. People are often of the mindset to carry and wear as little as possible when working out. Thus the cell gets left at home. Somtimes it is "accidently" left at home just to have a bit of peace for awhile.
4. Given enough storage a camera on a Nano makes a lot of sense. Especially for younger people that don't want to get tied up in cell phone contracts. Or in the case of the really young they have parents that don't want to bear that expense.

I do see it happening. Hopefully at a very reasonable price. If implemented right it makes a lot of sense in the evolution of MP3 player. Implementation is the key and frankly I'm not impressed with what the illustration is showing us. A few minor details corrected and all would be good.

That is an excessive limitation on phone cameras in general and does not reflect common usage. For example I shot some pics on my last trip, with my iPhone and did nothing with them until I made it back to my laptop. The same could easily be done with a Nano.

Where you like this in school? Have you never heard of a dock or USB cable? Do you think WiFi is impossible on the Nano? One only has to open their mind slightly to see the potential here.

There is little doubt that modern cell phone cameras suck. But suck is relative as some of the do better than the old film formats from the past. In fact my iPhone is better than the 110 and disk cameras from the last century.

Now combine this with rumors that Apple might be using new sensor tech and the potential for an interesting camera greatly increases. If it is the back lit sensor I've heard rumors of we could end up with a very high quality camera. Well high quality with respect to a cell phone, certainly low end point and shoot.

Is this a replacement for my Nikon - nope, not at all. These cameras however are not designed nor marketed to compete against a DSLR camera.

Already in this thread I've seen people indicate that they would never use the camera nor would their spouse or kids. I say that is BS of the slickest type. I can actually see the camera driving demand as long as the implementation is right. It is an ideal marriage for people in a minimalist mode.

I agree 100%. There is no way this would not sell. As long as Apple doesn't jack up the price much, all the little kids and teens w/o cell phones will get their parents to buy it for them. Sounds like a great idea to me. Get an iPod, here's a free camera.

We agree on the concept yes, but Apple will not mix two interfaces with the scroll wheel AND multi-touch together. Trust me! There is a reason why multi-touch REPLACED the scroll wheel. It is a far superior interface. They will not confuse and degrade that by mixing the two at the same time.

But yes, they will be merging the product lines.

I don't think the new nano will have the click wheel it seems like they are going away from that

iLounge posts an artist rendition of what it believes the next-generation iPod nano will look like. According to the site, the new iPod nano will see a wider screen (1:5:1 ratio), smaller click wheel, and built-in camera. The report seems to confirm a recent claim from HardMac that the new iPod Nano will contain a camera. Of interest, HardMac also said in the same report that the next iPod Touch would also include a camera. Both models are expected to be refreshed around September of this year.

EPIC FAIL!

This would never happen as shown... Guaranteed NO
