Is there a good technical reason why "artists" do this sync stuff? Or are they just a bunch of no-talent asshats like I suspect they are?

Managers jusn want a pretty face and some carisma, the rest is studio work. I work with "artists" here in Miami and there is nothing more scarry for a manager than a live act, if they could record everything on video and make the audience believe that is live they would. Artists are usually lazy and they are "artists for everything" they sing, the model, the do runnaway, they design cloth, they are actors, musicians, etc. at list that is in the latin industry and the north american industry is not any far from that.

Ashlee Simpson and her other cohorts in the pop music world are to blame for the sad state that music is in right now. The kind of music that MTV promotes now has really gone downhill since the early 90s. Seems like all they play now is rap, hip-hop, manufactured pop, and scream-at-the-top-of-your-lungs punk. Not that I have any problems with any of these genres, granted they are not my cup of tea, but where is the good old fashioned rock music?

Being only 23, I wish I had grown up in the 1960s and 1970s when music had a message and meant something...

Better watch out, jimsowden. It's pretty easy to stick an "Own3d" in your member name, and Ashlee might be out for revenge. :p

A new angle on this whole thing: Is there any chance that the whole thing was planned and done on purpose, on the theory that "any publicity is good publicity"? We're certainly giving her lots of attention that we wouldn't otherwise have given, aren't we?

True, but it sounds weird. Jim S0wn3den? Hers has a ring to it.

The majors churn out what sells. If nobody bought pop crap the majors would stop flinging it everywhere. Granted mass acceptence of crap by consumers is only part of the problem but it is a very big part.

the backup band playing a 'mad solo'!?!?!?!?!?!

It wasn't a Clapton concert or something. Give me a BREAK! :D

Ae you kidding me?? Do yo know how good you have to be to be in a backup band?? Seriously, I played back in highschool and anybody who has ever picked up a guitar for 20min can play some mad solo. They aren't hard, they kind of started to get in a rocking groove, one of them could have busted some nice solo.

The problem is that the pre teens have no taste in music and will buy anything because TV tells them too.

I totally agree with you. However, when I was 12 in 1993, MTV played cool stuff (in my opinion anyway) like Aerosmith, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and they played more music in general, no shows, at least not as many as now. Granted they played their fair share of rap, hip-hop, and all those other genres but back then, it seemed like that there was a better balance of music that was played, not just on MTV but in music in general.

I'm not saying that there isn't good music out there now. There is. MTV just doesn't promote it. I doubt any of the musical groups I like now would ever be featured on TRL. I guess the same correlation could be made to Windows: just because a lot of people use it, doesn't mean that it's good.

But back in the early 90s, you really didn't have any manufactured pop music because the industry was still recovering from the backlash of "bands" like New Kids on the Block. I am hoping that the backlash from the "artists" of the same caliber today will happen soon.

If in fact the lip-syncing was intentional and meant to generate publicity for the sake of publicity, well that says A LOT about the quality of your music that you have to resort to such tactics to gain any kind of notoriety. Perish the thought that you produce good music that actually stands on its own. What a concept...

That's why happens why you go from a "nothing to lose" upstart to a massive business that has a lot to lose.

It's just a viscious cycle. There will always be people motivated by art and there will always be people motivated by money. Crappy pop music from era X will just get replaced w/crappy pop music from era Y which will be replaced by crappy pop music from era Z. "Grunge", which was a backlash against Hair Metal, became oversaturated and people grabbed onto the next hot genre which was nu-metal (Korn, Limp Bizkit, etc.,). It didn't take very long for nu-metal to start imploding (thank god) which paved the way for the "new" music from bands like The Hives, The Strokes, The White Stripes, etc., (I say "new" because all it is 20 year olds playing 60's rock). Along the way Hip-Hop became huge and pop-punk appeared (yay.)

All era's have good music and bad music. The 70's had KC and the Sunshine Band as well as Black Sabbath.

That reminds me of a quote of Elton John:

Madonna, award for best Live Act? Why would you f****** pay that amount of money to see lip-syncing? Oh well there goes another xmas card...

Seriously though, lip-syncing artists should be banned of this planet.

Yeah, those were the days, when real musicians like the Archies, the Monkees and the Partridge Family ruled the airwaves :D

Yeah, but I think there's a fine line being a live act or TV gimmick. And the fact that the Archies managed to sell makes me wonder what people were thinking...

I wonder how different it really is. This album was the outcome of some kind of TV "reality" series, wasn't it?

I understand why this kid would want to use a recording -- attempts at live singing I've listened to are truly painful to hear.

The only really puzzling part is the kid's insistence that she would never do such a thing, and fabricating coverup stories. "Hey, this is 21st-century bubblegum, whaddaya want?" would have been fine.

Here's another case of blaming it on the computer in recent news.

Disney agreed to pay a half million dollar fine for airing commercials during children's TV shows that sold products associated with those same shows, which is a violation of FCC rules. It happened on 31 different half-hour episodes that Disney broadcast, yet the company blamed a "computer snafu".

Call it what you want, but I found it very convenient to be able to order all that Wiggles gear while watching the show. That way, I didn't need to worry about my short attention span getting in the way - I mean, sure, I might want Stanley pajamas, but how am I supposed to think about that when I'm watching Bear in the Big Blue House?

True enough, but you also had groups like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, etc. who ALL ruled the airwaves more than the likes of Davey Jones and Co. Can anyone think of any bands and artists today that the industry promotes that could be described as the contemporary versions of the groups I just listed???

This just in: The Computer is your friend, happiness is mandatory! She admits she couldn't sing.
"I can't cancel something like 'SNL,' " she said in a post to her official Web site. "You and I know that even if I synched on it or not, I'd still get seen by millions, maybe even make a few more fans. I'll hold my head high and say I think it was silly of me to do it, silly of me to blame the band, I was just so f---ing embarrassed. But I don't think it did me much harm, and people will see that soon."
"Seriously, I don't sleep much for a start, and with flying from A to B and flying all over the f---ing place, it's just getting to me. And it showed. Joke is on me, you seem to enjoy it."
Jessica might play the dumb blonde, but her sister's the one with no class....
