Doesn't mean they aren't making changes this year. Apparently Apple isn't taking reservations either.

Edit: Just saw your back-pedal.
Sure Apple is taking reservations this year just like last year.

Here is the link http://www.apple.com/iphone/notify-me/ ( left side bold letters ).

I would love to pre-order and pickup at an AT&T COR location but AT&T can't get the quantity that Apple provides to it's own locations.

The whole June 24 vs 25 for AT&T pre-order in-store pickup now sounds like it is drifting further to the right to give COR more wiggle room.

When and where can I pick up my preordered device?

As always, a pick up date depends on when you preorder and on our available inventory. That said, this year we’re encouraging customers to have devices shipped directly to their home or business – the fastest and most convenient delivery option. Customers can also opt to pick up their preorder at an AT&T store. Customers performing an exchange for iPhone 4 must have their device shipped to an AT&T store.

Preordering

Consumers may preorder iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS 8GB at AT&T retail stores or online at www.att.com/iphone beginning June 15. Business customers can preorder through their AT&T sales representative or by visiting AT&T’s Premier site. For greater convenience and faster delivery, preorders can be shipped directly to a customer’s home or business for delivery as early as June 24. Customers can also have a preorder shipped to their local AT&T store for pick up on or after Friday, June 25.

Since Apple does free shipping, THEY must pay the shipping costs which cost up to $8 per package. An employee works near minimum wage, at around $7-10 an hour.

Which one is more cost effective? Common sense....not so common.

$8 is how much it would cost you to ship and iPhone, not Apple. Apple I am sure has a special arrangement with FedEx for significantly cheaper prices. And you're not taking into account shipping to the AT&T store and the man-hours used to unload and manage the inventory. Holding costs are real.

Pre order from Apple and you will get it on launch day 100% guaranteed thats how I order all my apple stuff for years and they have never been late. They only thing is it will come whenever your fedex carrier is in your area

I went to the AT&T store at the mall today and posed this question to the associate:

"If I pre-order an iPhone 4 on June 15th, will I have an iPhone 4 on launch day?"

His answer was almost a flat-out no. He said, "It's not guaranteed that you will get one on launch day. Last I heard, pre-orders will come on June 25th."

I guess the point of this is just to warn people. This totally turned me off to pre-ordering. Even the slightest hint of doubt that I would get my iPhone 4 on launch day convinced me to wait in line.

Then again, it was an AT&T store associate, so at the same time, take this with a grain of salt. But in any event, I'm not pre-ordering.

Thoughts?

That's funny, I went also to AT&T store this morning to confirm my eligibility and availability of iPhone 4. He checked my account to his computer and told me that I'm eligible for a upgrade. He told me too that I can pre-order on the 15th and picked it up to their store or shipped it to my house on the 24th.
I think every At&T store have a different statement about the iPhone 4.

Did you even read my post? I said Apple offers free shipping.

Seems obvious to me..Pre order through Apple..Sleep in, no waiting in lines..Have breakfast at home..watch a few movies, and wait for the mail..When it comes on the 24th, open it, plug it in, and use it.

Sounds much better than waiting in line for 6 hours with idiots all around you to hope you get one..

I do have one question though..If you are going from 3g to iPhone 4, what do you do about the new micro sim cards? Also, ATT told me 2 months ago I was able to upgrade then, should I double check? I have had the 3G since the release date.

Did you even read their post? Someone has to pay for the shipping whether it's the consumer or Apple. Therefore, they meant that Apple probably negotiated with FedEx for a lower rate (maybe a bulk rate) than what FedEx charges the average, everyday user.

I agree completely with you reasoning. I hate lines. As far as the micro sim goes, your new iPhone will ship with one. And it can't hurt to check your upgrade status now, just in case something went wonky. Then at least you'll have time to fix it. You really shouldn't have a problem though.

I understand that, but how do I get my data off my old sim onto it? Will I still have to go to the ATT store to get it to work?

Exactly. I would trust a goverment PR spokesperson over any store associate. And believe me that itself is a leap of faith for me. I don't know why people assume that just because someone is on the cash register side of the display unit they know what they are talking about or that they are getting regular briefings from higher ups. They know nothing, especially at this early stage. I'm better the ATT execs don't even have the launch day plan in cement yet.

Oh! Sorry about that. I would think that if you were to sync your old phone prior to activating the new phone that iTunes should take care of that. I know there's a thread about this topic somewhere, but I can't seem to find it at the moment.

I want to preorder from Apple.com and have it shipped to my house, but I'm worried about the possibility of not getting it on launch day for some reason. It would drive me crazy to know I could just go to the Apple store and buy one in person, but can't because I'm waiting for mine in the mail.

Does anyone here have experience with their phone not showing up on launch day?

I would love to unbox and setup my phone by myself.

i am leaning towards just pre-ordering through apple and taking the day off to hopefully get it on the 24th.

ATT behind my house said their pre-orders won't be in till 6/26 or the week of 6/28. That makes no sense. They said they will probably only get like 80 on 6/24 so if I truly want it on Thursday 24th I'd have to wait in line.

Best Buy said they were thinking only 100 will allowed for sale on 6/24 and then Friday they would allow the other 400??? I don't know if I believe this kid. Why would they have 500 in inventory and only allow 100 on launch day to be sold. Said I'd have to get in line early...

Radio Shack down the street has no clue. This guy told me they would maybe get 30 on 6/24 and I could pre-order but they wouldn't get those till 6/28 or so... whatever...

So it looks like the best bet is to just pre-order from Apple and have it shipped to my home and hope it gets delivered on 6/24 because I'll need to take the day off.

If you pre-order from Apple, you WILL get it on the 24th. All their product launches have gone this way as of recently and Apple along with Fedex have coordinated it very well. True, you may get the delivery later in the day, but so what, you will have it that day and not have to wait in a line that you may or may not get one.

As to the questions about the SIM. The new iPhone 4 will ship with the micro SIM. Once you get the phone you will plug it into your computer and connect to iTunes. You will get a pop-up saying something to the effect of activating your phone to this or that number, which will be the number of the account you told Apple you are buying the phone on when you pre-order the device. Then it activates it for you and you are done. Use the phone. :D

Now, the only people who will have an issue are those who may pre-order the phone using someone else upgrade eligibility. In this case, when you try to activate the phone, it will try to activate the phone under that number that you used to buy the phone at the reduced price. In these cases, before activating the phone you will need to call up ATT and make sure that they switch the phone to the correct number that you want the phone activated on FIRST. If you hook it up to iTunes and activate it, it WILL activate it to the other line and you will be screwed. ;) (Well not really, but you will likely have to take the phone to an ATT cooperate store and get a new SIM).

Emphasis is mine. I'm not sure why this is rocket science for so many people.

I'm taking a gamble on pre-ordering mine. I'm leaving for a wedding first thing in the morning on 6/24 and will be staying at a hotel until the morning of 6/26. I'm going to have them ship it to my hotel.

I sure hope this decision isn't a mistake.

Ill be pre-ordering mine through AT&T Premier site as a new customer. I want to have my 20% discount on my plan from day 1 and not have to submit it later and wait 60 days for it to show up. One thing I noticed thats different than my buddy, I show a discount on both the minute plan and the data plan. Awesome

I'm thinking of doing this as well. Normally I'd be too scared, but it's a very nice resort hotel and convention center so they probably deal with packages all the time with business travelers.

When you order it's probably a good idea to write (Guest 6/24-26) w/ your reservation # next to your name.

This has a high likelyhood of becoming a mistake. If the shipping is delayed two days for whatever reason the iPhone will now be sitting at some hotel. :(

Apple guarantees that it will arrive on the 24th, but in the very very unlikely even it doesn't you can probably get the hotel to mail it to you if you pay for the shipping.

if it's anything like last year you have to order from att if you have a FAN account. I pre-ordered and picked up my reserved unit at the store on launch day
