Why are people asking cashiers that they want to use Apple pay. See an NFC logo, then use it. Simple.

People are dense and always attempt to over complicate things.

And as someone pointed out, it's the same guy that posted complaint posted at McDs. So he's just not going to learn. Or he's trolling us.

As someone earlier in this thread said, it’s probably easier to say, “I will pay by credit card” and then put the phone up to the NFC terminal.

I was under a different impression on how it worked. I tried out Apple Pay yesterday at my local Walgreens. When I went to pay, I thought I would just put my phone up to the NFC terminal and use touch ID.

When I was ready to pay, I put my phone up to the NFC terminal and I saw that the phone saw everything and accepted my touch ID, but the payment didn’t go through. I looked at my wife and said, “Maybe Apple Pay isn’t setup at this Walgreens yet, I’ll try again.” I put my phone up, did the touch ID and it still didn’t go through. I was about to pull out my wallet for my credit card, but the cashier saw what I was doing and hit a key on the register. He said, “Wow, that’s the first time, I saw someone do that.” Then all the other cashiers/customers had to gather around to see how it worked, but the transaction went through, so they didn’t get to see anything.

So you should say, “I will be paying by credit” to the cashier and wait for the cashier to hit the “credit” key on the register, THEN put your phone up to the NFC terminal.

Actually is the cashier that is supposed to ask, credit or debit.

stop with this ****ing "apple pay" ...yes there is apple pay..but you can also use it as just NFC... half the people working have no clue what apple pay or google wallet or even NFC are..but they know that people can just swipe their phone....

This, I agree with you 100%.

I don't understand why everyone needs to brag about it and make cashiers uncomfortable in their already familiar territories.

Simply people can say Im going to pay with my phone, and tap the damn thing and be done with.

And if the cashier asks "Credit" or "Debit"? well then tell them what card your using, because Apple Pay isn't all of a sudden a magical new form of money.

Life is simple, but people make it complicated.

Usually they wait to see that you are taking out a card, because they obviously don't have to ask if you take out cash. They seem to be stunned when you only have your phone out, so they don't ask

AMEN! Hope we do not have to hear this for every retailer in America!

The cashiers have no interest in your Apple Pay. We should not expect them to have any either!

many people outside of macrumors don't follow apple's every move. Why would someone's lack of knowledge of an apple specific service be so baffling? My wife who has an iphone had no idea what that was, and she hears me spouting off all the time on apple products.

All this whining is why so many people hate Apple consumers. Some of y'all feel so entitled about everything.

I'd never been in a Subway until I visited Philadelphia in the summer. I think I was the one who was confused. I wonder how many combinations of sandwich you can buy?

I hope you had a proper hoagie during your time in Philly. Subway is pretty low on the scale, although they are better than they were 15 years ago. It's all about the roll.

I know and that's my point. Why should any Tom, Dick or Harry know anything about Apple Pay. I mean if they're not an Apple fan, its quite possible that they never heard of it.

Its the chicken and egg problem. So someone has to be brave and ask to use it.

Not when it comes to government assistance. At subway it is weird to see the cashier take your card behind the counter and scan it. Admittedly, i dont like people touching my card. I dont know where their hands have been. I dont see anything wrong with people asking to pay the way they want to.

Exactly. Between the threads on the success stories and the failure stories, people simply do not need to announce that they want pay via ApplePay. There is a universal symbol on terminals that tell us, as the consumer, that we can pay using NFC. If someone is incapable of knowing this then it is their own fault. Consumers who want to use ApplePay should simply know how to spot those who accept it. I assure you, there is no secret terminal a retailer will pull out of their rear end when you announce that you want to pay via ApplePay. It will be right in front of you.
There was no terminal, the swipe thing was behind the register

Then that should have been your #1 clue to just pay normally. No terminal to swipe a single thing...then why would you over-complicate the $5 footlong purchase by asking about paying via NFC aka ApplePay?

That is kinda the point. No matter how much training you have until you actually try it out in the real world you dont really know. The next time the cashier will know. Getting mad at people for saying ApplePay vs NFC is a pointless exercise.

People have a right to ask if their payment method is accepted. Thats not unusual especially for amex and discover card people. Now all of the sudden you have Apple fans shaming each other for asking.

The truth is the more we ask for it the easier it is for the next guy. Also you are educating the cashier.

Subway employees are always rude and none too bright. I see a picture of a sandwich that I want, I tell them to make it look like the picture on the sign and they give me a dumbfounded look and then get mad at me. Their ad made me want that particular sandwich so make it look like that!

Yes I realize a lot of them are plastic molds.

Sounds like you're the rude one here.

Don't ask to pay. It is 100% obvious if you CAN pay via NFC because it is right there on the terminal under your nose. You have zero reason to ask permission to pay via NFC. This is simple, terminal exists with NFC symbol, pay your bill as you wish. Terminal exists without NFC symbol, pay normally. The NFC option will not magically appear because you refer to ApplePay. It is installed on the terminal. No terminal, the option should be clear. Hand over your card to the cashier and do your thing.

why are you people making such "circus" out of this.. just pay the damn thing with money and wait and extra month or so until stores/restaurants train their employees properly for this. Its hasn't been out not even two weeks yet you're all shocked how employees dont know about applepay, how they dont know how to use it, how they dont know it even exists... Newsflash - not everybody is reading tech news sites 24/7 and are on track with every single thing that comes out from Apple. Relax, wait and stop whining already.

Not entirely true, my local grocery store has terminals that accept NFC, with no obvious indication, the screen just says "Slide Card", you just have to know, and tap your phone/NFC card anyway, and it works much to most people's knowledge. This is the way most NFC terminals are being deployed it seems, because Jersey Mike's Subs, Home Depot, etc, all prefer this way it seems. Probably because they don't want to spend the money on changing the wording.

Not with Subway. They have terminals with no overt NFC capability and no markings, which are - in my experience - out of normal customer reach on the other side of the counter, facing the cashier.

If you want to pay with Apple Pay, just tell the cashier you want to pay with Credit. They hit a button on the register screen that activates the terminal, and the NFC logo will appear. TouchID and done.

This is the terminal:
