one of the few times i give a negative rating. so i order an iphone G3 and if i want to activate it i have to go to an ATT store, deal with incompetent sales people, maybe even have to give them personal info just to activate a phone that i bought. that sucks.

i have already an iphone and i thought i just pop my old sim card in and go to att's website and pick a g3 plan. that would be easy.

i also can't understand apple for going with this. they will only lose sales.

Would you call Germany and the United Kingdom socialist countries?

If you haven't noticed it yet, the U.S. economy is in a shambles right now and one of the underlying causes is that large corporations have been allowed to reign freely and ruthlessly without regulation. Well, guess what, it's coming back to bite them and, sadly, it's also devastating for a lot of totally innocent people too.

Well since you asked, yes, I would say much of Europe leaning heavily toward socialism (luckily some countries are coming to their senses and kicking the socialists in charge out - e.g. Germany, France)

The U.S. economy is doing fine thank you very much. I don't think high oil prices will be the end of the world. In fact, it's great, it will help to lower usage and companies will speed up research for alternatives. Capitalism is a beautiful thing.

You folks getting all worked up about a cell phone need to relax.

Overall they will increase sales due to being available in more countries but their attitude and the fact HTC and co will copy the best of Iphones OS features, will mean the iPhone will not become all it can be

Good. I'm tired of all this Jailbreaking nonsense. If you don't like the carrier Apple has teamed up with, then the iPhone is not for you. Deal with it. I can't believe it has been allowed for this long. It's no different than installing OS X on a PC. How come those threads get shut down, the the iPhone jailbreaking threads don't?

Are you really that internationally ignorant?

North Korea LOVES capitalism...

Look around... Millions out of work. A fat and well fed upper class. A nearly destitute working class and a nearly DOA middle class. Tax cuts in a time of war, and an environment that is growing more and more toxic every year.

You have got to be a troll, but an entertaining one!

iPhone vanishing act

I might be a little slow here, but I just went to AT&T's website to look for any mention of the new service plans. There was nothing on their website about iPhones. Nothing except a mention that there are none available. No mention of the new phone coming on July 11. It's as if the phone didn't exist.

This fits in with my experience a few weeks ago when I called an AT&T rep to get pricing on the iPhone family plan and was flatly told, "We don't sell iPhones. I have this great LG that's just like an iPhone!"

I guess AT&T just wants to sell phones -- any phone -- as long as they can immediately sell a contract with it. With iPhone's higher service fees, I would think that the reps would at least tell me when the phone would be available -- especially since I specifically requested that phone. But perhaps with AT&T customer service takes a back seat to the desire for immediate profit. :(

Geez, how often does this have to be repeated?

Jailbreaking is for apps, unlocking is for carrier choice. I think few people care about more apps, most just care about being able to USE IT AT ALL.

I don't believe this to be true. It doesn't make sense. If I go into an Apple store to buy a new iPhone in a few weeks, there not going to sit there and set it up with you, and I'm not saying because they don't care, because they have great one-on-one programs and they are very helpful when buying new computers and such. I just can't see them wasting their time setting up probably 3 million iPhones on July 11th. Yeah, I'm exaggerating, so don't quote and flame, but you get my point. During the keynote, Steve Jobs noted that the phones were being unlocked and used around the world and he acted as if it was a compliment. At no point did he say it was a terrible thing. They are still selling their phone, and AT&T is still seeing roughly 75% of the service revenue.

I just can't see this actually happening.

An EeePC is $500, a Macbook Air is $2300 and the Eee has more features.

Did you ever take a LOGIC course in college? I did - three, to be exact. Your argument make NO SENSE and compares two completely different products. Nice try, though.

The EeePC has FEWER features as it does NOT include OSX and the fit and finish of the Air amongst MANY other things.

Care to try again?

From this post, I'm assuming you don't already have AT&T. If you do, you must have had very few problems regarding your bill or services.

I have had AT&T for about 4 years now and although I'm overall pleased with the services and prices, they do not exactly share the same philosophy as Apple when it comes to customer satisfaction. I have had enough problems where I had to call up and request a supervisor and literally get irate in order for them to fix their own mistakes. I'm not trying to bash AT&T, because like I said I am overall satisfied with the services I receive.

But you're guess is right on, AT&T is about the profit right now! Not next week, month or year. They are very much all about what they can make from you at this precise second.

You also forgot the missing dock, which is probably gonna cost $29...

I wouldn't use the dock for anything. It comes with the USB charger/connector cable so I don't see a need for the dock unless I'm missing something?

Serious question: Can I use my old iPhone dock?

I noticed on the new iPhone website it says it's a 30 pin port. Is the old iPhone 30 pin as well? I thought it was 16. I assume if I am right, I cannot use my old iPhone dock...

I thought Apple would have fought harder to get more freedom, they're not really worried about jailbreaking are they, it's AT&T etc who lose out.

Possible.... but on the other hand, those who jailbreak their iPhones can't update them! Or at the very least, would have to re-jailbreak (is that correct?) after an update to avoid having a shiny new paperweight.

Over the weekend...

Over the weekend I heard an interview with a spokesman for the US Chamber of Commerce.

"Global free trade has been a 'win' for the working class in this country.''

Yeah. I know a whole bunch of unemployed workers who are grateful for all of the free time they have now to pursue their hobbies...

Like dumpster diving, and returning bottles found on the high ways...

Fluffy Bunny sounds like he could work for the USCofC...

"There's nothing wrong here. Nothing a little more free trade and tax cuts can't fix..."

Whatever... I'm done.

Has Apple sold out the iphone for profit? Nothing new here. It's capitalism. So is not buying an iphone.

even if that said Carrier Taxed your nads off?

behave get on ebay ffs
This appears to be a strictly American problem. Hating AT&T seems as fashionable and politically correct as hating Microsoft, and this sentiment is probably not without merit even though there's a lot of exaggeration going on...

Here in Sweden I'll be paying somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 of what Americans are paying for their contract, and I'll be getting excellent coverage in every remote ass-end nook and cranny of this country... 3G towers everywhere you look. Apple picked the best carrier possible.

The same probably goes for a large number of the 70 countries who will be getting the iPhone. You can't fault Apple for America's crappy cellular infrastructure and extortional data and voice plans... Apple had to choose between plague and cholera, and they went for plague, a.k.a. AT&T.

Define "win". You could never go out and buy an iPhone, an iPod or a flat screen TV for mere pocket change if it weren't for the billions of Chinese workers who assemble these gadgets for peanut money. If every part of the iPhone had been built in the US we'd be talking $1,990, not $199.

with all due respect, you are so wrong. This is the way to make sure unlocked iphones stay off the market in the future. Apple and AT&T gave it a year and saw that not only did people buy the iphone but they also sold the iphone on ebay and craigs list. You don't get the fact that these two companies are in business to make money. Both companies lost a huge amount of that over the last year from non-subscribers and re-sale of phones. You only have yourself (2g iphone buyers) to blame for this new policy. Play by the rules and activate your phone like all other mobile customers do, at the point of sale.

Can You Imagine....

Can you imagine what the line is going to be like when people are at the Apple/ATT store trying to activate their iPhone 2 with some idiot ATT sales rep working the whole thing. This is going to take forever and Apple is going to have a lot of very upset customers. Very BIG mistake by Apple to go this route, just unlock the phones and let people use them on any carrier they wish. Talk about becoming like Microsoft, Apple is nailing it on the head!

I just poked around some more on AT&T's website. I thought this was interesting:

http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-ph...s/?q_sku=sku1250067&q_planCategory=cat1370013

I was looking up Family Plan rates (even though iPhone isn't specifically mentioned anywhere). The old iPhone Family Plan had unlimited data bundled with it for $109 a month. The current 700-minute-a-month Family Plan goes for $69 a month. The link above is from the Data Plan page. Again, there's no mention of iPhone. But there's a selection for "PDA" unlimited data, and it's $30 a month. And so is the Blackberry data plan.

So it appears AT&T is hiking its data plan rates for all smartphones, not just for the iPhone. And even so, $99 a month (the Family Plan plus unlimited data) is $10 a month cheaper than the previous iPhone Family Plan. If this holds up to be true on July 11, AT&T will have another customer (actually, a family of them)!

You star! These links deserves their own thread.

ironically i was staring at this page, waiting for an update:

http://shop.o2.co.uk/iPhone

Yeah, i also got excited about this, im with o2 in an 18 month contract that doesnt let me upgrade till october, so im hoping that the PAYG route will work (putting in my sim card into it).

Also its interesting that the 02 web page says that the PAYG pricing will be up soon, sounds like they havent come up with a plan yet. I wonder how this pricing will go as steve says the MAXIMUM price is $199 worldwide. As they say it isnt subsidized if you go into a long contract, what will the pricing be for PAYG?
