This appears to be a strictly American problem. Hating AT&T seems as fashionable and politically correct as hating Microsoft, and this sentiment is probably not without merit even though there's a lot of exaggeration going on....

I don't mind AT&T so much... same for Micro$oft... but I REALLY hate the Windows operating system.... lol

Here in Sweden I'll be paying somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 of what Americans are paying for their contract, and I'll be getting excellent coverage in every remote ass-end nook and cranny of this country... 3G towers everywhere you look. Apple picked the best carrier possible.

:eek::eek::eek:

Apple had to choose between plague and cholera, and they went for plague, a.k.a. AT&T.

LMAO!!!!!

I don't know about anyone else reading these forums, but it's amazing to see how high the flames get from people's anger in this forum.

Seriously, when July 11th rolls around and they release some last minute "unannounced feature" a lot of people will probably put these issues aside and just buy the damn phone if they want it....or....continue the ENDLESS complaning for a product they want to convince themselves they don't want.

Right?

Be interesting to see how much the pay as you go option is.

Well, at least in the US - there will be NO PAYG OPTION! That sucks for me as I HATE contracts. Yes, I can get a contract...but I do not want to commit. I have a plan with PAYG that works well for me as I send the texts and talk under 350-minutes a month. I use EDGE a bit for e-mail. I pay the same as the contract price but I get less minutes and no texts. Big deal. I would pay $400 for the phone and use PAYG but the marketing director told TUAW that PAYG is NOT an option in the States.

Oh well. At least I have Version 1.0...I hope they do not screw with that PAYG option or I am back to Verizon (where I had a contract for 10-years) which in my area has better service, both customer and wireless.

D

Well, i would have been glad to buy an official iPhone. Now I can't even unlock Finnish one. Thank you, Apple! For some very interesting reason I can buy iPhone in some third-world country like Niger, but can't in Russia. Very good job, even better than my rotten macbook. (it was actually rotten when I bought it).
Maybe Apple will finally think about customers?

Apple products make me happy. Why would Apple want to make you all happy? A happy Russian is like a cat with its claws removed; it may seem benign, but claws are one of the things that make a cat a cat. A happy Russian is no Russian at all. The world needs a big gloomy grey morose alcohol-abusing culture right about where you are standing. Thank you, Apple, for your continuing service in helping to maintain the grey and gloom of the Russian people.

iPhone 1 with 2.0 Software Value Just Went Way Up...

ATT will come AFTER you if you don't activate your phone in 30 days!!!! This is absolutely hilarious. Apple has made a great phone, but their ability to handle the carriers and deal with the contract terms has been a total disaster. The value of the unlocked iPhone 1 phones just went way up. I'll be keeping mine. Who cares about 3G and GPS, wifi is everywhere! Apple pushes their customers farther away with every new detail of this iPhone 2 service contract.

So it appears AT&T is hiking its data plan rates for all smartphones, not just for the iPhone. And even so, $99 a month (the Family Plan plus unlimited data) is $10 a month cheaper than the previous iPhone Family Plan. If this holds up to be true on July 11, AT&T will have another customer (actually, a family of them)!

I believe that the Data Plan is applied to lines individually, so it's 30 dollars per phone. At least, that's what I've gathered from my experience with AT&T's corporate accounts.

According to this site: iPhone Italia the iPhone will be sold in an unlocked version at 499 and 569 euros, 8gb and 16gb respectively.

I'm probably gonna grab one when I go to Italy this summer. The price is still worth it to avoid breaking my T-Mobile contract and being shackled to ATT and their expensive monthly fees.

I'm a current U.S. T-mobile customer and very happy with both my plan and T-mobile in general. From what I've read, it seems the T-mobile 3G that's rolling out is different than the 3G band AT&T uses so that would make the new U.S. 3G iPhone pretty useless to me. But are there any other countries out there that have or will have the same 3G band that T-mobile US is rolling out? If so, and they will sell the new iPhone, maybe I'd look into getting the iPhone from there unlocked (although, 569 euros is quite a bit to drop for the 16GB version (the version I would want)

Yeah, i also got excited about this, im with o2 in an 18 month contract that doesnt let me upgrade till october, so im hoping that the PAYG route will work (putting in my sim card into it).

Also its interesting that the 02 web page says that the PAYG pricing will be up soon, sounds like they havent come up with a plan yet. I wonder how this pricing will go as steve says the MAXIMUM price is $199 worldwide. As they say it isnt subsidized if you go into a long contract, what will the pricing be for PAYG?

Can't be more the £100 according to the no more than $199 around the world but I think he meant the iPhone will be sold for no more than 199 of your local currency so PAYG shouldn't be anymore than £199/299 (Depending on model 8GB or 16GB)

That is kind of offensive.

If the cut out the iTunes activation scheme, that would sux sooo bad.
What about peoples who don't live near an Apple Store but can use the Internet (as in On line Apple Store) and can actually use a cellphone?

I won't buy one. Next.

Good. If you don't want one, don't buy one. I'm glad you said it. People here think it's a right for them to have a mobile from Apple. I'm not saying it's a privilege, but as a consumer, you don't buy products that you don't like. If you don't like this because of Apple, or because of AT&T, then don't buy it. As a consumer, you're not getting screwed because you're not forced to get this phone.

At this point IMO, one would be better off getting a Nokia N95 and 90% of the functionality and a few better features without having to deal with the silly games.

Then exercise your rights and buy the mobile phone you think is best.

SIM Ejector Tool

500+ posts in this now Off-Topic thread, chatting about capitalism v. socialism, and I'm AMAZED that no one has mentioned the SIM Ejector Tool included in the box with the phone. I don't have any more details other than what's on the iPhone Specs page. But come on, you mac zealots usually have that page memorized by now. That tells me that you should be able to put in $YourFavoriteCellProviders SIM card and activate it. And note that the pricing is only a general $200/$300 price, there hasn't been any more details on that yet. Or what types of plans you can use it with. I would guess unlimited voice/data on ATT will be at least $120/mo.

Plus, if you notice, it has Tri-Band 3G, which includes both American and European bands. Nokia hasn't even done that yet. Only the THIRD version of the N95 supports American 3G. And even then, you have to set it up yourself, and it only runs on ATTs 3G network, no T-Mobile (US) support. Granted, the iPhone doesn't support T-Mobile's 1700Mhz 3G band either, but there's only what, 3 1700Mhz towers out there? And a handset or two with 1700Mhz chips in it?

Apples way of secretly screwing AT&T LoL

Not a big deal to me.

I enjoy just using the phone the way it is given to me

I have gotten very interested hearing about all the applications many unlocking/jailbroken people have dealt with but I still prefer just to keep it locked

Heheh... well well, a real live person from the 1950's. So time travel does work.

Russia, annual economic growth rate: 8%
USA, annual economic growth rate: 1%

You see, during your last 8 years under Curious George, the rest of the world has swooshed past you like a Maglev train. 50 years ago we all followed America's lead, now we see it more as a cute time bubble where 80's hairdos and theory of evolution dismissal rules supreme.

It's been brought up many times, but this tidbit never sticks for more than half a page...

Makes the calling soooooooooooo expensive

I'd love to buy the iPhone.
But with the current locking policy it doesn't make sense.
If I can't drop a GO card while I'm on travel, I don't have a use for an iPhone.
If I add the 3 $ per minute roaming the iPhone becomes an exclusive luxury assessor.

Reinforce the locking - fine, exclusive 2 yr contracts - fine, but provide an option to change the carrier while traveling. Or better offer 2 sim slots
A European perspective...

Did you consider the vantage point? China has also experienced an insane growth, but as the country's vantage point is different from e.g. Swedens, then the two countries are incomparable.

Of course. I just found Gasu E's post about Russians slightly offensive...
Go back to that post and replace all instances of "russians" with "negros" and see how long it takes for it to be deleted.

So did I, I have seen many post's on this forum and a few others being very offensive towards russia and it annoys me I don't go around insulting the US do I?

what is with half the idiots in here not realizing that many people do not have the option of using ATT. the problem is that right now many of us could use an iphone solely because it works on more than just att, specifically t-mobile. now all of us who were able to use it are shut out. people who do not live anywhere near a physical store are shut out. people who do not have att coverage or who have been royally screwed over by att are shut out.

why is everyone so ignorant to think that we are just wah wah crybabies who prefer t-mobile over att. for some our only choice has been removed.

New 3g iPhone in France

I was wondering - In France it is illegal to sell a phone tied to a contract - so it seems anyway. Apple plan to launch the phone in France so I assume it must be unlocked for that market?

I think most of us get that. What we don't get is the tone of shock and surprise, when you already knew this would happen, you knew Apple has a 5-year contract with AT&T. Steve Jobs himself couldn't get an iPhone contract with T-Mobile for the time being.

if that is french law then yes. lucky you guys =[

The only reason Russia is growing economically is because they just stopped paying their citizens in Rubles and found something that was worth more and readily available, POTATOES.

Now that the potato economy is live in active in that country, where just about everything else failed, of course they are going to be growing faster than the US.

One thing you forgot to note though, is where the hell Russia is growing from. You can't just bring up the fact that they are growing more, you have to have a start too ya know. Like the Chinese who are making more money than the US, but more than half of their population is below the poverty line.
relax, just joking, although it's the truth.
Going back to the iPhone now, I hope that AT&T doesn't screw iPhone users over. I almost wanted one now that it can be called a real smart phone, although I haven't gotten word on the ability to edit office docs and iwork docs yet.

Is it french law? I didn't know that seems I have a little holiday around end of July in france now:D

Edit: It seems that they are doing the same as O2 in UK and offering a Contract & PAYG option.

there isn't shock and surprise. there is just frustration over the fact that they did this now, after letting it go on for so long. a lot of us got our hopes up. i did not know this would happen. there was no precedent to base that on.

how is it bad to come on a discussion forum and discuss our displeasure.
