It's not just currency issues.

It's more about the lack of transparency of many financial markets around the world. Overseas carrier play the handset subsidies better because they don't have to file detailed SEC quarterly filings.

UK carriers like to do huge discounts on prepaid phones during christmas to boost their financial numbers --- guess what more than 50% of them are box broken and exported overseas. The carriers are chasing fake customers --- and they don't have to give you any detailed financial filings on them.

UK is full of box breakers, cashback deals (aka pyramid scheme) and VAT carousel frauds. It's a dirty game in Europe and I hope that American companies don't that game at all.

Anoter person who has no idea about the UK market and maybe the EU in general.

Beep. Wrong.

3G iPhone has A-GPS. Assisted Global Positioning System. It uses Satellites, cell towers, and Wi-Fi to increase accuracy and decrease the time it takes to locate your position.

Does anyone anywhere read and understand anything before making nonsense statements???
Well there you go.

My point was that the new iPhone is not Miles ahead of it's predecessor. That no one should be busting themselves up over it. it's just another upgraded Apple product. Upgrades happen and they don't flush the previous model down the toilet.
That's all.

The next iPhone3G2 will be when they take the Razr route and start offering them in different colors in order to try and keep sales going.......prepare for iPhone Red and iPhone Pink by Christmas. Same phone....new colors and new CONTRACT!

Yep, you bet!

Yep, you bet!

Get this. ATT is now revealing that you will need to pay them $9.99 a month if you want to enable the GPS feature on the new iPhone!!!! Just a minor point you didn't mention on Monday old Steve'O!

10$ extra for the data plan
9.99$ for the GPS Enable
5$ for the 200 Text Mssgs

Grand Total - 24.99$ extra over the existing contract.

24.99$ x 24 Months = 599.76$ extra on the service plan

199$ + 599.76$ = 798.76$ cost of the iPhone3G to you TCO.

WOW, simply WOW!

Is it cheaper Steve? Is It?

Here is the bait, and here is the line...now bite!

If this is correct, then this is pretty bad. Maybe teaches Apple a lesson to just sell it everywhere.

I don't recall reading about "capitalism" in the US Constitution. Too many Americans confuse democracy with capitalism.

By today's standards, what do you think the minute men would have been called? Hero's? Forefathers? What if we grouped together and did the same thing to ships and gas stations? Same thing isn't it? Not wanted to pay that price? (gas)?

What, by today's standards would they be called? Would they be the hero's and forefathers that we know and love today? Or would Black Helicopters show up and the media call them terrorists?

Interesting isn't it.

The strange thing is its probably true.

How sad it is that so many people want the government to be their momma and papa.

I have a question for you - as I said in my previous post, if I don't want the gov. to be my DAD (Demo) and think that gov is out of control (REB) and acted like our forefathers and took to the streets (gas stations, pumps, ship yards) and organized (similar to what you said, only instead of not paying for it, thought it was "out of control" and organized 10's of thousands and instead of pitch forks and single shot ball bearing rifles, we had M16's, Grenade launchers, and took over the ports, basically an up rise keeping the BOSTON TEA PARTY as a model, how do you think that would be perceived?

Actually, while you my say terrorism (which is what our forefather would have been), actually, if something like this happened, I think it would grow pretty fast, much faster than say a small sect would have been a few years ago. People are angry from California to Maine and everywhere in between.

So, what happens then when a group of people use the constitution as you say, but don't sit at home and become more pro-active and act it out similar to the forefathers? Interesting idea. Possible screenplay. Hmmmm.

Well this is NOT the source but this is what they call AT&T NAVIGATOR (GPS) which is a 30 day trial - if this turns out to be true, wow, there will be FOUL cried every where.

http://www.wireless.att.com/businesscenter/popup/telenav-gps-important-info.jsp

Also, not sure how they are doing it but TOM TOM is releasing a software package for iphone 1 so it will somehow be better than what apple presently has.

If true, then I think Apple would be smart to re-release the FIRST iPhone at any price, maybe $299 as some would save even if they broke (jail) and used TOM TOM GPS, only thing they won't get is 3G which each day looks less appealing considering almost all of us are near a data system (WI FI) and can deal with EDGE, especially if over the long run it is going to save a lot of money and no contracts.

wow if this is true, jeez. apple had a real chance not to renew the deal with ATT and they blew it. the iphone has a big name for itself, why didn't they just sell it stand alone at their own store, allow att and t-mobile customers to use it and let the carriers worry about the plans.

Just a point, Apple and AT&T have a 5 year contract with one another. All the did was change out some of the details, all though some pretty big details.

That link detailing the GPS fee is 3 months old. It will be interesting to see if AT&T applies it to the iPhone. A horrible marketing decision if they do, but it wouldn't surprise me either.

AT&T isn't very well known for listening to what the market demands.
I have my doubts that they get the Apple fanboy mentality.

I guess we have 30 more days to find out what the details will be.

A dream that becomes a nightmare.
Here in Italy we were already dreaming of magical journeys to USA and coming back home with 10 iphones to unlock...
So I will have to stick to those pricy Vodafone or Tim contracts...

that's part of the point. Apple has set up contracts with carriers in various countries and likely also retailers. it cuts into their deals if you can buy the phone here, unlock it and use with with whomever etc.

Is this GPS or navigation because the two aren't the same thing?

So say I buy an iPhone from the store. Within the 30 days that I'm supposed to activate it the iPhone gets stolen. Does that mean I not only lose my iPhone but I also have to pay the penalty? Does anyone catch my drift here?

doesn't matter since you'll have to activate it before you leave the store.

As was already mentioned, you have to activate in store.
Though still some questions around buying it at the Apple store.
There was mention a penalty for not activating, possibly your credit card gets charged, or a bill in the mail if you pay by cash or check in the Apple store???
Don't pay the bill and you get sent to collections and your credit report takes a hit.

Plus, I believe with most other cell phones, they can send out a signal to the phone the next time a stolen phone is turned on, basically render it inactive.

Otherwise all those other lost and stolen phones in the world would be running somewhere.
Of course I don't know enough to back this up.
Anyone eith better knowledge on the subject????

Well it's not a problem then - any provider charges for navigation services. Passive GPS is free and will be included in your data allowance (for Google Maps or whatever other mapping system you use).

Thats what I was figuring once I reread the page when you questioned if it was the Navigation service.

I'm sure the British would have called them terrorists. One man's terrorist is, after all, another man's freedom fighter. It all depends on whose side you are on. History is also written by the winner of a war. Truth is hard to find long after the fact. I'm not sure whether I'd be amused by people having an iPhone 'tea' party or not. We don't want your bloody locked iPhones with ridiculous hidden prices in AT&T only contracts! Into the harbor they go! LOL. Yeah, the media would definitely label such people as criminals and crazy ones at that YET the history books PRAISE those criminals that dumped the tea into Boston Harbor so long ago. Go figure. What I find ironic, though, is that the whole Boston Tea Party thing was to protest unfair taxes and yet our own self-levied taxes today FAR exceed anything Britain was doing to us back then. As for taxation without representation, well, I'd say our government doesn't actually represent "We The People" anymore either, more like "We The Rich" so the same STILL holds true, IMO. Is Canada any worse off than us (they that didn't fight to gain independence)? I don't personally believe so. Some of their prices and taxes are higher, but their government also takes better care of their citizens.

" There WILL be a crack, there will ALWAYS be. Last year when the iPhone was released, there were fears that anyone not on AT&T wouldn't be able to use it. Those skeptics were wrong. As long as there are Tech/Geeks, there will always be solutions. "

Ok I think you don't get it do you...
Apple & AT&T are actually acting BEFORE you can crack anything.
They used to act (at least try to) after you got your iPhone..
Now you cannot get out of a shop without having your iPhone activated, with a 2years contract. And even if you wanna cancel it go ahead, but fees will bring up the price to a normal iPhone price.
You guys have to face it, US iPhone comercial policy is now locked at its basis, no way thru (at least for the moment).
I think deleting On-line shop option was a bad move from Apple (from a commercial view, but it is really nice from an anti-piracy view..), and they will bring it back soon I'm quite sure about that, if they realize they're not selling anything...

Anyways,
We'll see how things go and I'm praying for you US guys to find a way, the cheapest possible.
I think you'll find it thru Europe and non-exclusive providers, pay&go...
Cracking is not what's getting everybody worried, as we talk crackers already know how to unlock 3G iPhone..
Unlocking AT&T is way more complicated... :D

"This morning we're getting a first look at unsubsidized prices for the iPhone 3G in Europe. Vodafone Italy have set an out-of-contract price for the iPhone 3G at 499/€569 ($773/$881) for the 8GB/16GB models, respectively. Subscription rates have not yet been announced."

Engadget

All the people with iphone 1g, your iphone price just went up too :)

Even BlackBerry is using that kind of " we have more carriers than iPhone, hooray "
That's sad... :p
