My eligibility says 12/10/09 though and I got the iPhone 3G in July, so I guess this announcement isn't good for me?

Yup it looks like its for a limited time only, and only covers July/Aug/Sept. It also says for the folks that paid the early upgrade fee, i.e $499 for a 32GB instead of $299, they should get credit back to their account

If the 3G came out in July 2008 and the contracts are typically for 2 years (and you may be eligible for upgrade after 18-24 months), how could the vast majority of users be in a position to upgrade in July/Aug/Sept 2009? That is only 12-14 months after the 3G came out.

Hmmmmm....

I don't get it.... I bought my iPhone 3G in July (after upgrading from the first gen iPhone) and I am not eligable till Jan/2010?? Why are some people eligable before me when they bought the iPhone 3G the same time I did?

Hmmmmm....

Those who paid for the 2G are credited 6 months due to the 2G not being subsidized. So, if you had a 2G and upgraded in July to a 3G, you will be eligible.

It has to do with how much they spend per month

It also depends on how much you pay a month. I bought my 3G last year in late July and my monthly bill is at least $150 a month (unlimited voice/data) and i've paid all the bills on time so it said I was eligible on July 30th because of that. I think of you pay the bare minimum on your monthly service it affects the upgrade date.

I did the calling *NEW# (*639#) on your AT&T device (we’ll send you a text with upgrade information)

it says "we can offer you an iPhone upgrade at a hight price with a 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee"

can I get for $199/299?

I imagine that sentiment will last hmm....3 hours. Then everyone will go back to hating them for some other reason. (Not particualrly you, just people who are thinkinng this in general).

I can't believe Att buckled. The twitter-ers won. Well, mostly. Wow.

AT&T said:
for example, iPhone customers who spend more than $99 a month per line with us generally are eligible for an upgrade between 12 and 18 months into their contract.

average cost of the iphone plan is what, 80 dollars?

My upgrade was in July, and I pre-ordered the iPhone 3GS 32GB to pickup at the Apple store, I'm assuming this means that I'll get the discounted upgrade price there right?

The press release says it will update on the ATT system tomorrow so I would try then.

Untrue, I had a 2G and upgraded and I got January 2010

Then I guess they don't like your hair color or something. Because that's what has been explained since last week and that's the status of my account. I just have no intention of upgrading to 3GS on my phone. So I'm eligible, and don't plan on using it.

I'm calling ATT now, i purchased my 3g the same day as a friend of mine, and we pay the same bill, and his date is Aug, and mine is December...WTF!!!

Not really, it affects the folks that are eligible for cheaper pricing in the next 2 months and most probably pre-ordered anyway. Now Apple can say they moved that many MORE units opening weekend, and AT&T looks good too.

If they just let everybody upgrade for $199/$299 (regardless of monthly bill rate) that would have been a victory for the customer.
