If the 3G came out in July 2008 and the contracts are typically for 2 years (and you may be eligible for upgrade after 18-24 months), how could the vast majority of users be in a position to upgrade in July/Aug/Sept 2009? That is only 12-14 months after the 3G came out.

Hmmmmm....

im eligible exactly 12 months after my purchase, 7/12, because its a high revenue account

I’m confused though, if people bought their phones last July, August, or September, how on earth would they be eligible for an upgrade a year later? Don’t they sign 2-year contracts?

This is total BS and only for iphone 2.0 customers. No one with 3G will make their July-Sept cut unless they spend over $99 on each line. Earliest would be December. Total BS. :mad:

Here is what they can offer me. I bought the 3G on opening day last July:

We can offer you an iPhone at the full retail price. On 12/12/2009, you may qualify for a standard iPhone upgrade.

* $499.00* — 8GB iPhone 3G (black)
* $599.00* — 16GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)
* $699.00* — 32GB iPhone 3G S (black or white)

idiots!! :mad::mad::mad:

All i know is, I am able to upgrade on july 12th (1 year, 1 day after I bought my 3g (bought wifes same day, her's cant upgrade until march 10).

With this news, I can upgrade mine friday for the 199/299 price. 32Gb here i come!

Does the account have to be over $100 since the purchase of the 3G? Mine still shows 12/2009 and my current bill is about $180 but that has only been since February when my wife got her iPhone.

*shakes head*.....

Read the press release that's linked in the very first post of this thread. Actually it's showing up on the frontpage of Macrumors now.

Hmmmmm....

I checked today in my AT&T account and it said that I was eligible for additional discounts in July. Said I could buy the new 32 GB 3GS for $499 or wait a month to get additional discounts.

I thought I was locked in for two full years so this is a major positive surprise.

This is not the case, it's when the phone was PURCHASED and ACTIVATED between these 3 months...

I had a 2G iPhone and upgraded to the 3G in July, but it says I'm not eligible until December of '09. Doesn't seem fair that some folks who bought the 3G in july aren't eligible and others are.

thats the new 2year contract, if your 12 months into your contract you would have to do an "EARLY UPGRADE"

That's not how AT&T works.

Re-read the announcement. It says if you are 11 months or so into your 1st year of contract, and are eligible in July, August, September, you can upgrade for the same price as others who are already "fully eligible" for $199/$299.

Well-- I called and the answers are completely nonsensical.

In fact, I think he was just conjecturing as to why I am not eligible until March 2010. Especially since I had to tell him that ATT had even announced this deal.

He said it was because I have 2 lines and I am not spending 99.00 a line. So if I had not transferred my mother's phone to ATT and kept my single line 3G phone and still maintained my over 99.00 a month (which I would have)-- apparently I would be eligible. BUT because I have her ALSO on ATT now I am supposed to spend 99.00 for EACH line in order to be eligible for my one iPhone line to be upgrade at the lowest price.

*snort*

I told him that it is really frustrating that A) he didn't even know about this press release B) that ATT is not clear with how they determine how who is eligible or not C) that I purchased the exact same day as everyone else did and I had been an early 2G adopter-- and yet nothing.

Honestly at this point since it seems so random I wish ATT had not even changed their minds. I wasnt pissed before, but now I am.

Guess I'm still out of luck here. I'm not an Iphone customer, just have a regular phone and want to get a 3GS. My upgrade date isn't until 9/7/09 so it looks like I still will be waiting 2 and a half more months. I will see for sure tomorrow if anything changes.

Stop complaining.

People will always whine.

I think AT&T did something good here, and went out of their "corporate" way just to do something right by the customers. I would never have expected this from AT&T.

if it doesn't show that you can upgrade now try checking back tomorrow. the release says "f you’re one of the many customers who will benefit from this change, please note that our upgrade eligibility tools will reflect this change on Thursday, June 18."

Mine says 12/2009 still but that's what it said last week when i looked at it. Hope to see something different tomorrow.

I don't see how locking people into a new multi-thousand dollar 2 yr agreement a couple months early is doing right by anybody.

I have every right to complain, and I will :)

No one is forcing you to read or respond to it, and I'm not being disruptive, just stating my opinion.

That's not what the page says

Right, as i was on the phone with ATT, they received a second urgent update press release internally that changes it, it is people who purchased july, aug, september..they are wokring to get the press release to the public ASAP

If that's true (not doubting you, doubting AT&T) that would be a significant difference.
