If the 3G came out in July 2008 and the contracts are typically for 2 years (and you may be eligible for upgrade after 18-24 months), how could the vast majority of users be in a position to upgrade in July/Aug/Sept 2009? That is only 12-14 months after the 3G came out.

Hmmmmm....
There were many customers that are "Upgrade Eligible" as of July 11, 2009. So this 3 month window is to address the "High Value" Early Adopters. :D

AT&T truly went above and beyond here. This wasn't needed but I sure am glad because my upgrade date is 7-12-2009! I fear they may be setting a dangerous precedent because a lot of iPhone users act like entitled brats, and other people should expect the same deal from AT&T no matter what phone they have now.

How much you wanna bet there's now going to be an outcry over "but I bought my iPhone 3g on launch day last year too but my upgrade date isn't until....."? You can't please people who have no concept of discipline and fulfilling one's contract, nor recognize that AT&T is of course going to be lenient with persons whos bill is higher.

For those that are wondering, from the press release:

For example, iPhone customers who spend more than $99 a month per line with us generally are eligible for an upgrade between 12 and 18 months into their contract.

This means that 12 months into the contract - assuming you have a rate plan over $99 a month - you can get this discount on the new iPhone.

What's really weird (and cool) is that I was a new AT&T customer last year and got the 3g iphone on 7/12/08....now I just hit *639# and it says im eligible for the full upgrade on 7/12/09....I pay $115 a month including the 900 min plan and unlimited texts....Im not complaining because now I may actually get this new iphone but how would I be eligible in only 1 yr?

Self-fulfilling prophesy. People ought to be glad I'm not AT&T. I'd never have subsidized it in the first place. You want it, you buy it outright. That way I have no need for 2-year contracts.

Is it too much to ask to read the press release where it explains exactly "why" you would be eligible? Short answer is your recurring monthly bill is >$100.

Yeah, what the heck? I bought my 2G in Sept 2007 and then 3G in July 2008. My upgrade date still says December 2009.

ha! and here is my answer, I have an employee discount, i fall $9 bucks under the $99 amount to be eligible for the 12 months!!

WTF!!!!!!

i'M fighting this :p

Guess I will be getting mine friday instead of waiting unitl july 12th.

Yay me

Yea I went on ATT and also went through the Apple store to check eligibility and it says I "may" be eligible for an upgrade on 7/28/09 ... So this only applies to people with bills over $100? because I think I'm fairly close, but if they don't give me the discount when I go pick up the 3GS on Friday I'm gonna raise hell. :D

I'm eligible after 1 year as well, and I'm guess it's because my total phone bill averages a little over $300/month with 2 iPhones and a non"smart"phone that racks up the downloads....

From the press release where they say "between 12 and 18 months", that's the wiggle room that AT&T uses to determine different eligibility dates for people.

Wow.

This sets a dangerous new precendent for the future of AT&T. I feel blackberry and other smartphone users will rise up and also demand yearly upgrades.

I have to say though, I was in the "read the contract, stupid" or "your a crybaby" camp. But I have to hand it to everyone involved, for such a small minority of vocal users things sure did get tightened up pretty quickly.

This is quite the accomplishment.

Congrats. enjoy your new iPhone 3G 's

New info!!! It's when the phone was purchased, not the timeframe!!! So i am eligible!!!! yeeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaa!!!
