Late morning Pacific isn't because Cali is the center of the tech world, it's their way of saying it will be up in the "Morning" because that sounds better, and by choosing Pacific, that buys them as much time as possible. It's akin to saying something is $19.95 when it's really $20.

The time sounds like Apple is responsible for getting it on the iTS.

Shouldn't you all be thinking about what you're going to complain about next?

What to complain about after not having MMS... how about the impending failure of MMS? ;)

I like how they say

"MMS Update: We know you’ve been eager for this service so we wanted to offer a quick update on the launch plans for MMS on Friday, Sept. 25. Late morning, Pacific Time, on Friday, the new carrier settings update enabling MMS should be live and ready

Should be.... hummmm I think two days away they "should" know whether or not they will be ready!

So at my company, we always deploy new software into production overnight. (Actually, as an international company, we have about a six hour window on Friday nights/Saturday morning when we can deploy things when virtually no one will be working)

Why wouldn't AT&T do the same thing: turn it on when utilization is the lowest? That way usage will ramp up over the course of the day, instead of creating a great big spike in the late morning. This just seems like they don't know what they're doing. Fancy that, AT&T being clueless.

Not a huge deal

I'll prob send 5 out of pure excitement (over nothing) and then never send another one. But added features is always a plus

Actually no, cuz wen the network goes down you can call AT&T and get credited like 20 bucks for it. Imaging EVERY AT&T customer getting 20 bucks off the october bill?

Also, "Late Morning" seems to me like "Late Summer" and I will appear "Late Sunday" or so :p

So you want to bring the network down, preventing people to make calls and use their phones properly, so that you can get $20? Nice...

I really don't get it

What I mean I really don't get why it's taken so long for MMS to come to the iphone in the states. I'm in the UK and had MMS on my 3G since OS3.0.

And I was bemused why my old 1st gen iphone couldn't do it from day one.

Surely AT&T have had other brand phones on there network from day one doing MMS so what makes the iphone any different. It's not bandwidth which I've read about. What makes the iphone so bonkers for doing MMS.

Because that would make total sense. And what has AT&T done that makes sense so far??

Why MMS?

I must admit that I just don't get it. MMS is a primitive way to send images. Why introduce MMS now when we have email in the phone. Ok, not all cells have it, but give it year or two... Arn't there better things to spend the money on than MMS?

Don't Laugh....

Man, I can't wait until Apple and ATT announce an extension of their exclusive agreement. Ah…good times. :D

...I bet Apple does extend this contract. Verizon's network won't be ready by mid 2010....and this will allow Apple to keep the high subsidy (cash) flowing in from us (thru AT&T) because of the exclusive deal.

It is all about the banwidth

MMS Text < 1,000 bytes (prob closer to 100)
MMS Picture is around 1,000,000 (or less if compressed)
MMS Video is in the multiple megabits...even for a short clip.

The key here is MMS Video. It represents a exponential burden on the network.

I don't really understand all this vitriol for AT&T. They were the only carrier initially willing to sign off on the iPhone, sight unseen, and have tried their best keeping up with the enormous bandwith consumed by iPhone users.

Any carrier would be under the exact same pressure if they had iPhone users consuming bandwith an order of magnitude greater than other smartphone users. Most people I know with Blackberry and WinMo phones use them to just text, DM, and talk. If people here think if the iPhone was suddenly on Verizon that all the network issues would be immediately rectified, you"re sadly mistaken.

Then you actually have people wanting to try their best to bring down the AT&T network, and use that as justification for why they're incompetent?

Idiots.....

Well said.

Thankfully, there are still a few of us left. :D

I'll bet you're a pain in the ass on the playground, too. Does the family let you join it at dinner? Grow up!

(ditto to macduke, micahfreak82, mr matalino; sounds like the whole kindergarten class is here)

Ok Teacher...

Psst... Send an MMS to your friends at exactly 9:37PM Eastern ;)

My thoughts exactly, I just get tired of saying it. Thanks!

I bet the goal is to keep the school kids away. Since they all get home at diffrent times and time zones are involved you have your rumored roll out in groups.

I have Friday off, and I know a lot of people in my school have iPhone's.

When you can send media in E-mails, I simply don't understand the clamor for MMS. But two things:

1) I predict the rollout will go smoothly as far as network bandwidth/businesses is concerned.

2) I predict a whole lot of people will be on here whining about problems they are having after installing the new carrier settings! And not problems with MMS either!

Tick-tock!

Mark

I've been MMS'ing for over a week now :)

You are the type of person I am talking about in my #2 above! When you install the "legal" MMS carrier settings, I'm betting those that hacked their iPhones for MMS will be the ones with problems. :)

Mark

I still still don't get it!

If it's the video MMS thats the problem.. I still don't buy it.

I had MMS vid on my first 3g phone.. 4 years ago?! when the 3g network in the uk was awful.

If AT&T at offering unlimited data over 3g network like here in the uk then bandwidth cannot be an issue.

The amount of people on iphone hammering youtube concurrently on one cell massively out weighs the bandwidth used by people sending MMS.

bizarre.

BTW, you guys do realize that the MMS carrier settings upgrade will require firmware 3.1 and iTunes 9, right? :)

The difference was there weren't that many 3g users then. I can remember when I signed up for a 3 contract 6 years ago. I was one of 5 people I knew of nationwide who owned a 3g phone. Overall that isn't many.

The difference is that AT&T's network is a hotchpotch compared to our largely high coverage, high volume networks that we have here in the UK. And yet they have a massive userbase that is already overwhelming the limited data capacity of the 3g network. Add in the (admittedly low) extra bandwidth of all those data users having MMS as well and they really are talking critical mass. There are a huge amount of iPhones in the US, and none of the GSM/UTMS networks over there (AT&T/T-Mobile) are up to the job.

All 5 of our networks over here can cope with the load. Unfortunately the better networks in the US use the older CDMA technology, which would preclude Apple selling the iPhone in the rest of the world. Because of that, they had to choose a GSM/UTMS network, and the better of the two (just) is AT&T.

Even an O2 cell (acknowledged as the worst performer on 3g in the UK) has more bandwidth available than a similar AT&T cell.
