And my reply would be I DO! I only text people who don't have smartphones, the slackers. ;)

Also I'm a little depressed that we have to wait a another whole year for the next iPhone to come out. 3GS was such a disappointing update. I'm not upgrading till the next one.

You're kidding, right? I think the 3GS was golden! They took something that was already proven to be a hit (3G) and made it super fast! All of my friends that have the 3G are jealous and can't wait to be able to upgrade just because of how much faster everything runs on the 3GS.
IMO Apple made a fantastic move with the 3GS. Yes, it could have a front camera and this and that, but overall it is a fantastic machine.
And no, i'm not an Apple fanatic. I just like my toys to be fast :)

I predict major AT&T network outages on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and on...I also predict a lot of pissed of AT&T customers leaving and a pissed off Apple looking for another carrier to sell the iPhone with.

I will be leaving when my contract is up (and hopefully Apple will have launched iPhone on Verizon).

Just woke up to MMS working for me in Oregon. Installed the 5.2 carrier file last week and still had the ! until just now.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7C144 Safari/528.16)

Late morning = 11:59:59 am PST

AT&T network crash = 12:00:01 pm PST

Maybe this is how Apple gets rid of their AT&T contract! Apple can say "you promised MMS and it was a complete fail now it is time for us to move on!". I know this is only a dream, but one can hope!

Jeff

Agreed....

BTW.....MMS Working for me already in Atlanta, GA

I'm not too far away, Chattanooga, TN. Maybe it starts working for me soon.

Did you have to install some carrier file? How did you notice you had it? Was the option on pictures along with "Email photo, send to mobileme, assign to contact, use as wallpaper"?

The only people that bash the 3GS as a "mediocre upgrade" are the ones who didn't upgrade. Those of us who did upgrade know just how much of a difference the speed makes.

The 3GS was an interesting play by Apple - it's like a "stealth upgrade". No visible changes on the outside at all, just a few new features on the spec list, but damn, there is SO much more horsepower under the hood. It makes using the iPhone a much more pleasant experience. I never wait for anything now. And I can background apps to my heart's content (on my jailbroken 3GS).

Back to the subject of this thread: I predict iTunes 8 and OS 3.0 users can still upgrade the carrier file. It's just a little config file - I seriously doubt Apple bothered to put hooks in the upgrade process to check all the versions. Besides, MMS was enabled in 3.0, just not for AT&T.

I also think the network overloading is overblown. We may have some hiccups at first, but is MMS used THAT heavily? I realize iPhone videos are much bigger than the average dumbphone MMS, but still. I'm going to continue to use email whenever I can to send stuff, and just go to MMS when the person on the other end has a dumbphone.

considering the fact I had just received 2 SMS messages that were sent last Friday (6 day delay?) I can only see this as being a disaster..

SMS and MMS delays?

I've had two SMS delays in the past week, but no delays in MMS. I'm in Los Angeles, and have been sending and receiving MMS for a little over a week now, using the updated carrier file floating around. It's been working pretty well for me, though I am nervous about this weekend. I get full bars of 3G here in LA almost everywhere I go, with an occasional flip over to Edge [3 times max in the past 9 months] but am skeptical over what's going to happen this weekend. LOL!

I saw the same thing here in Virginia! It is clues like this that predictions like this WILL be true. Just make sure everyone reports this on a new thread here and then we can all send this to local news organizations. With enough ground swell we can show AT&T that they should spend less money on advertising and more on their spotty network.

Lol. What a hilarious post. News organizations and mms from att? BWAHAHAHAHA! Seriously?

Ugh. This MMS thing has a lot of people all bent doesn't it? Lol.

So, AT&T's service is going to be slower then ever friday. Awesome.

Any bets on what time AT&T's network will be "down for maintenance" tomorrow??

New excuses are always good..

30 minutes passed "late morning Pacific time" :D

Haha, now if we only knew when that actually is, because we all know by now that they go by "AT&T Time"..

By the way, I just got a text from AT&T. It will be interesting what their excuse will be now, since they apparently "enhanced my coverage".

I'm still wondering how MMS would hurt the network more than every single iPhone user streaming youtube at the same time would.

Hahah, can you imagine what would happen if everyone who owned an iPhone actually did stream YouTube videos all at once? RIP AT&T. I gotta stop dreaming...

New Orleans working without a hack! The only downside I'm seeing to their implementation is that when you take a photo to use for a one time message it doesn't save to your camera roll. I can see why it wouldn't I would just prefer that it did.

Early MMS Activation

What I want to know is why some people already have it, while AT&T is saying that it is going to take a carrier update before it will work. Did the people using it now have access to the carrier update early, or did AT&T do some voodoo magic over the cell network and activate their iPhones remotely?

Just wondering.

HOW did you sign up for these messages??

I'm wondering that myself, and if an iTunes sync will be necessary. My friend's started working yesterday. He said he received a text from at&t advising him to go into Settings--> Phone--> My Number, then click "Save". He did that and it started working.

I love how people are "OMGZ AT&T are gonna DIE!!! FIRE! BuRn!!!"
The entire reason they took so long to roll out MMS is so that wouldnt happen. Besides, lets be honest, the average iPhone user is going to send 1 or 2 MMS right after they update and then return to normal. No one is going to be spamming MMS... People already upload photos to twitter, facebook, myspace, etc. I'm sure AT&T knows what to expect and has taken all necessary precautions and upgrades.

And we all know, that if the iphone had originally been with verizon, the same problems would have happened. NO ONE could have predicted the massive amounts of data that would start flowing from the introduction of one phone.

I rarely send photos, but MMS is a nice feature to have. Gotta love the random hilarious event you may see and wanna send to your friends!

haha i updated to 5.1 a few days ago and MMS still didn't work...
UNTIL TONIGHT!! it just started working for me :) pretty cool
