You know, everyone crying about the data plans should probably check their data usage. YOU DO NOT USE AS MUCH AS YOU THINK YOU DO. I barely break 200MB myself and I'm using the data network all the danged time with app updates, web browsing, and more. If you're using over 2GB a month then you're really, REALLY pounding on your data usage.

So are the idiots at ATT still going to charge twenty bucks for unlimited texting? It's just data. Sprint is looking better and better.

I just checked my data usage and was lauging....Sooooo unless they offer over 4 gigs to 5 gigs will def be w8ing for the jailbreak

I wonder if the same goes for iPads?

I had my iPad data plan activated on Sunday afternoon, it's now Wednesday and I've already hit 120 megs. Sure, part of that is because it's new and I want to play, but I have been avoiding doing anything to do with video (OK, we watched one YouTube video) and I wait until I'm home to use WiFi to download apps. Most of that data transfer has to be email, Safari, and syncing of calendars and such.

I think iPad users will tend to use more data simply because it's a bigger screen that encourages you to do more, and pick it up for longer (I've had to charge my battery 3 times, which gives you an idea of how often I keep picking the device up).

What the HELL are you doing on that thing? Streaming Youporn 24/7?

And did you miss the part about existing iPhone users being grandfathered in for unlimited data, even with a new phone/contract renewal?

Couple of Points:

1. What kind of tethering? If it's only USB/Bluetooth then it's worthless. WiFi tethering is the only worthwhile way to go, and I have no plans to stop my iPhone from doing so.

2. $15/200 mb is good, but not good enough. For people new to iPhone, who are leery about the extreme cost (given that they barely use data at all), this 200 mb a month should be FREE. That's right it should. Free. If you exceed the first 200 mb, then AT&T can charge you $15 for 200 more for the month. THIS would be useful for attracting all those 50 and 60 year olds who would love a phone they could actually see (nothing compares to iPhone) and could actually justify the cost.

3. 2 gb/$25 is extortion, borderline criminal. This is going backwards, and its the worst news we have ever received in the life of the iPhone.

4. Thank God AT&T is not going to screw existing customers out of their Unlimited plans (at least not this year, be prepared for it to happen though!).

So does that mean i can just use my iphone as a data device with just the $25 data plan, or do i still need a contract (assuming i already have the iphone, not in a contact)?

HAHA no kidding right I was shocked to see that much also....MyWI has spoiled me rotten when not being able to get onto the internet at home, work or other areas. So dang easy and FAST!! I use it sometimes daily. I have had several months where it was into the gigs without a problem...Last month was only right at a gig. Yesterday couldnt get on the net at work so streamed away without one break. Im sure this month will be high

MyWI is "FREE" only if you continue to pay $30 for old unlimited data plan and jailbreak your iPhone 3Gs and DON'T every upgrade to the new 4G iPhone or any future iPhone.

Sooner or later, you know you want the newest iPhone. Thus, in the long run, that position will become untenable.

You can continue to pay 30 for unlimited even if you renew a contract or buy a replacement upgrade phone.

Forget AT&T....

I'm about to jailbreak my phone and tether using MiFi....

Why use MiFi? Just use the built in Apple tethering in iphone OS 3. If you're jailbroken there are apps in Cydia to activate the functionality.

I suppose that you your ignorning the fact that Verizon if they get the iphone will have these same types of plans.

Verizon and AT&T pretty much follow each other when it comes to most things. When Verizon lowered the price of it's unlimited plan guess what? AT&T responded by doing the same exact thing.

And verizon also implemented the same policy of requring Data plans with all smartphones because AT&T did it as well.

So the moment verizon gets the iphone you will see these same plans over there as well.

One thing to remember is that if Verizon sticks with current plan pricing that would mean that you would pay $44.99 for 5GB of data plus $15 for tethering using that same 5GB of data. So just because Verizon "may" be getting the iPhone doesn't mean that it will be any cheaper. Nothing is unlimited with Verizon

When was the last time there was a suicide bomber in the U.S. where the bomb went off? That is a daily occurrence in Israel.

Realize that war is a daily happening on the streets in Israel. Here in the U.S., we only get to watch it on TV from a distance.

Other than in the ghettos of large cities, getting shot on the streets is a fairly rare occurrence in the U.S. compared to the Middle East.

And of course, scud missile attacks don't occur in the U.S.

Here murder on the streets occurs much more often than in Israel. So do home invasions, armed robberies, etc. We have bombings all the time, though not as often as Israel, and not generally the suicide variety. Not sure what your point is, but i dare say Israel is a safer place to live in terms of violent deaths, so their data plans look pretty nice to me.

Watch one video with the 200MB plan and you are capped out for the month.

This is like a report from the onion. Hard to take ATT seriously. I hope Verizon and others take advantage of this laughable move by ATT.

200MB would be ok back in 1995, but it's 2010 now.

Dear ATT, it should be:

2GB / $15 month
6GB / $25 month

and include text messaging.

These new plans do nothing but offer less of ATT's network and make them MORE money. This is not for the consumer, but for the greedy CEO.

Regarding making profit, the carriers here in Europe can provide unlimited tethering, far better coverage and stability then AT&T and faster connections under 10 € and still make profit.
How much are the European carriers subsidized by the governments?

How is that not cheaper? 5gb would cost 25+10+10+10 on AT&T. Plus 20 to tether. So the same usage would cost 15 more on AT&T. (I believe it's 10 per gig over, but I might have misread that)

Hmm. So if I get the new iPhone... I'll be forced to choose the 2GB plan which is at $25 so my Fan account won't apply... my data plan already is reduced to about $25.5 with the fan. SO I'll be paying $.50 less but in turn be reduced by 3GB.... great.

Also checked my data usage the past 6 months and fluctuates every other month to 3GB to about 1GB. Interesting situation.

Looks like I'm going to have to drop my txt plan altogether and start using Google Voice fulltime. Hopefully the new OS is jailbroken soon because Apple won't let the Google Voice app in their store.. I mean Apple "has not rejected the Google Voice application and continues to study it." Has it been long enough, Apple?

Or just get a far superior phone that currently offers Google voice. I laugh at people paying 20 bucks for unlimited text and then also paying extra for data. Pssssst texts are just data.

How is this defendable?

People are actually DEFENDING this move? I'm not gonna put up a wall of quotes, but people are calling these caps and pricing structures "intelligent" and "practical". What the what?

How is increasing the infrastructure, but offering less, and charging you more (per MB), in any way an improvement?

There is one quote from the OP:

AT&T states that 98% of their smartphone customers use less than 2GB of data per month.

Without a tethering option, I believe it. So AT&T withholds a service that would make use of the unlimited data option, uses that non-availability to back up its usage stats, and then offers it back to the consumer at twice the price. In what world is it fair to pay twice for data depending on how you access it?

Keep on doin what you're doin AT&T...you're a steady reminder that, no matter how badly we're being financially raped by our carriers, it could always be a little worse :D

That's what I'm thinking too. Especially with the widespread availability of Wi-Fi at home, work, businesses, and even in public spaces (our downtown area has free Wi-Fi for everyone). I know that I would rarely have to use 3G based on how often I'm in Wi-Fi covered areas.

You are correct that overage will be $10 for 1GB. Some months I may go over that amount which would get me in the Verizon price range but most months I will not go over that 2GB cap. For some it will be cheaper staying with Verizon and others it will be cheaper staying with AT&T. I do like that fact that the competition (if Verizon gets the iPhone) will also help change the market.

Yeah everyone, this fanboy knows how much data you need. Calm down. Everything is fine. Just don't use Netflix on demand, video chat, or the inevitable Hulu app. Wouldn't want to you know...use your device.

I wonder how much all of those forced ads in apps are kb wise. Nice little racket Apple and ATT are running here.

We had 9 killed in the city over the 72 hour weekend in Baltimore.

But we do have 4G!! :p
