AT&T Announces Single-Day Record for iPad Sales and Activations

FAA having pilots use iPads for Takeoff and Landing prep

I see. So when they ask me to turn my iPad off because it is 'interfering with the aircraft's radio equipment', I am assuming that the ones the pilots will be using will be operating on a completely different radio band, or a different electronic spectrum for that matter. :D

Nope.. they will not have any radios enabled during takeoff or landing. (Airplane mode)
The data is preloaded. ;)

Nope. There's WiFi almost everywhere. With a little planning, you'll never need to connect using anything else.
Please tell us where we can find free WiFi on Caltrain between San Jose and San Francisco.

I know I can connect to Google's free WiFi in Mountain View when the train is stopped at the San Antonio station (but not at the Mountain View station, the signal is usually too weak). I can sometimes connect to Caffe Venezia's public WiFI at Palo Alto station if I'm on a car that's near the depot. There might be an open Linksys at Burlingame station. That's about 2-3 minutes of connectivity.

Also, let us know where free WiFi is on BART. I know that a couple of the downtown SF stations have a beta network.

Gone are the days of finding a lot of open WAPs in the SF Bay Area. Most people seem to have locked WiFi routers. Since I don't patronize chain restaurants or coffee chains like Starbucks, I'd like to know where all this free WiFi is. I'm not seeing it in the SF Bay Area.

Not at my parents or my in-laws. That's one of the reasons I ordered a Verizon iPad (the other being that AT&T's network is nearly non-existent in New Mexico). And as soon as Apple puts out an LTE iPhone, I'll dump AT&T. I was hoping to do that with the 4gs, but that wasn't to be.

Remember signal strength is about your location relative to a cell tower.

Just in case anyone else is wondering... I have VZ iphone 4 and ATT ipad3, testing the speeds I get much better results from the ATT iPad. Of course it is 4G whereas the iPhone 4 is only 3G, but I also see a stronger signal overall from the ATT device.

As such signal strength is only important to you in regards to your current location. If anything I get slightly lower performance out of my 4G RF wise in the same locations that I used my original iPad in.

One thing that I've noticed is that transfer speed, at least download, is much faster than any other AT&T device I have. I do not believe that LTE has been implemented locally yet so this is a pleasant surprise.

In any event I've been very pleased with AT&T. They are just far more professional even if their pricing structure could use a little effort.

You must be too young to remember the mid 90's then...

Even today Apple has products that could be doing far better, but Apple had a brief history where nothing much good came from the company. As someone that has watched Apple since the Apple 2 days I've seen as many failures as great successes.

Locally you would have to hunt for a WiFi spot that is open. What is even worst, is that many of the open WiFi installation locally suck, my iPad 1 was often faster over 3G. Consider yourself blessed if you can get buy without 3G/4G.

x2. I walked in wanting a 32gb. I saw the stack of papers for the 64gb was smaller, so of course I had to buy that one instead. Thanks again apple for making me want to spend an extra $100 :D

Actually, although true -- I was trying to be funny and make market speak... best launch ever, blah blah blah. I'm sure the next one will be too.

Scott
ps: I try my hardest to skip generations, so I won't be able to announce a new personal record with the next launch (skipped iphone4s and ipad2).

Wasn't the percentage of Wi-Fi iPad2s something 95% vs 5% for 3g? Wasn't there a very small amount of inventory for the iPad2? Setting a record with 4G and a ton of inventory really isn't saying much.

Well, I wouldn't agree with this. I would say wifi is not an acceptable option for most traveling with a wifi only iPad or laptop. I would say finding wifi everywhere one might need it would be nearly impossible.

My point about not seeing the need for hotspot on the iPad is this...you already have an iPhone or smartphone that already has a data plan. You have a data plan on your iPad if you want to surf, etc on a larger screen. The only reason (besides perhaps buying 2 iPads...one wifi and one 4G and using hotspot for the wifi one) I can think of for using hotspot on the iPad being necessary is if you want to use your laptop. And what are you using internet on your laptop for that you can't just look up on your iPad??

Their business model or their ethics? Or do you mean their treatment of customers who don't understand contracts?

Seems to me their business model is pretty damn successful...

As I have reminded people in a few other threads, the whole AT&T throttling people is a non issue. Only a small minority are concerned.

Congrats to AT&T.

To sum up this quote, "if it doesn't affect me I don't care"

Well buddy I AM concerned with it! ;)

Bye Bye ATT!

I'm using ATT with the family iPhones with few issues, just upgraded to the iPad3. I had legacy unlimited ATT data from my iPad1, used it with the iPad2 and figured I'd get the iPad3 on ATT as well.

Bottom line, I tested speed on the new iPad3 compared to my iPad2 and speed went from approx 3MB/sec down to now 5MB/sec down on 4G. Upload for both was still around 1.5MB/sec.

Not very impressive, I called ATT and was told that that was within spec for their 4G. I also learned of Verizon's free iPad "Personal Hotspot" included in their plans.

I decided to walk into my local Apple store, on Ipad3 release day no less. There was no line, they were happy to exchange my 64GB ATT for a Verizon model. I went home, activated, speedtest shows approx 17MB/sec down and 10MB/sec up!!

I turned on the Personal Hotspot, connected my AppleTV to the iPad via WiFi and streamed Netflix, tried movies etc. all was great. Normally you just can't direct connect to an AppleTV, it has to be on a network, so this is really handy for travel as I bring ATV's to presentations for wireless iPhone or iPad projecting as well as quick connection to hotel TV's.

So I dumped ATT's "unlimited" plan at $30/month for now Verizon's 2BG plan for $30/month. My usage trend has never been that high anyway so I'm not looking back. This is a much better setup and plenty enough reason to leave ATT. Also I tried my wife's Verizon MiFi while back East and was blown away at the speeds, Over 20MB/sec up and down in Orlando Fla. Not too shabby!

Well, as I learned this weekend, free WiFi, simply put, SUCKS!

It's good for emails and maybe surfing the web. But even when downloading apps it's worthless.

I went to two McDonald's, three Starbucks and one public library. 3G was faster in every case.

I think everyone is missing the point. Apple is highly successful, and has been for quite some time. Yes, they did horribly 20 years ago, but that's the past. None of what happened back then has any bearing on them now, or in the future.

I think it's a little dramatic to try to compare WW2, and the Berlin wall, and JFKs assassination to Apple. They're not that important. :D

It's actually not even twenty years ago, yet. AAPL would of failed in '98 if it weren't for the iMac.

Who cares about something that happened 20 years ago?
Yeah. Why should we remember any history? Not acknowledging the past is foolish and ignorant.
Apple never begged for a government bailout to stay in business like many companies have. (as far as I know) so that's something.
No they did not, some would say what actually happened was worse. Microsoft saved Apple. Again, this is something that people should remember before they go around bashing others.

I have to say AT&T made it easy to transfer my Unlimited plan from my iPad 1 to the new iPad 3 without having to call anyone. AT&T works well for me. Just wish they offered a home wireless plan with unlimited data.
