Only in the US of A. Thank you Alcatel-Lucent.

LOL All these non-American people, complaining about having to wait for new Apple products, should be glad and say thank you for sorting out all these little annoying issues for them

Is an iPhone 3G HSUPA?

Which is exactly what the statement from AT&T says, if you bothered to read it.

Guys, I may be stupid and not up to speed on all this but...

Is an iPhone 3G HSUPA? I thought only the iPhone 4 supported this.

Age? Really?
I've moved on from Jr. High.

If so, then refraining from personal, juvenile insults would be well advised.

As for the rest of your comment, we both agree. Everything you stated was fairly equivalent to my post, so it seems a bit odd that you're finding fault with what I wrote.

Discussion done.

Why do people not read?

JESUS H DIAZ read the freaking story you are responding to...

If it is a software issue with their wireless towers/network then it will effect everyone. Nobody from AT&T said it just impacted iPhone 4 users.

Seriously, why do only 5% of the people on MacRumors ever read the articles or stories they comment on?

Okay so I'm going to come off like pompous a__ here.

If AT&T said it only effect 3G HSUPA-enabled devices and the only iPhone to support this is the iPhone 4...HOW CAN YOU SAY I DIDN'T READ THE ARTICLE?!?

If I'm wrong and the iPhone 3G supports HSUPA...sorry :D

Since it has only been 1 week for me since this outtage started I am not really complaining just yet. I fall on the side and tend to agree with the people that think it has to be a throttle, I cant see how a piece of software or hardware can accidentally cap us at 100k without someone at ATT keying in that number somewhere. I CAN see however, having software issues requiring the cell tower techs and crews to impose a technical cap to put less strain on the network during this time in order to have an easier time working on the network.

Here is what I have been going through.
Phone: Iphone 4 16GB
Plan: Unlimited Iphone Package (Grandfather Plan)
Preorder received: June 24th, 2010.
When the phone arrived I was ecstatic after seeing my casual in home throughput. On average I pulled what you see in the screenshot:

June 24th through July 2nd of 2010 averages:
Latency at home in Smithtown, NY (30 miles outside of NYC) = 280 to 420 ms
Upload at home = ALWAYS CONSTANT 1.50 to 1.70 Mbps
Download at home = Between 2.80 and 4.50 Mbps (depending on time of day)

BEFORE:
before.jpg

Now, exactly on the night of July 2nd, 2010 I have not been able to achieve anything higher than .09 Mbps, which is just barely faster than a 56k modem to me. But the reason why I post all of my information here is quite simple: Not only am I being capped or having crappy upload speeds, but the phone is much less responsive, and I am no longer seeing anywhere near 3.0 + Mbps.

AFTER:
after.jpg

Now after this new cap, my maximum over the last 5 days testing all over long island (nassau/suffolk counties) has never been over 2.1 Mbps download including in what was my new favorite 3g spot my home where for the weeks of june 24th till July 2nd I was almost up to 5 Mbps downloads on a nightly basis. So, there is definitely something funky going on with the network because honestly it is a totally different phone from the first week of use until today. The internet lacks the responsiveness the phone initially had and of course as everyone is posting, throughput is much much lower.

In any event, this is life. Things happen. And it is the first couple of weeks of iPhone 4 madness so not only do you have a lot of new iPhone members on the airwaves, but you have many new HSUPA capable devices hitting the towers at the same time. Maybe the load's were unexpected by AT&T and they need some time to work the kinks out. This is definitely hindering my phone usage and experience with the new IP4 but as long as this is not some long drawn out HSUPA cap of more than 1 month I think these lips will remain sealed as far as blabbing to CS or Corporate.

Cheers Fellas,
Dominick

How does resolving issues in poor network carriers in the states change anything for other countries that have had solid 3G networks since years?

Yesterday, we reported that a number of iPhone 4 users around the United States have been experiencing severely crippled upload speeds on AT&T's 3G network since the holiday weekend.

At the time it was unclear whether the issue, which limited upload speeds in many markets to 100 kbps, was an intentional cap placed by AT&T or if there was some sort of network issue or maintenance operation causing the slowdown. AT&T has finally responded with an official statement acknowledging that the slowdown is due to a software defect in Alcatel-Lucent equipment affecting users in certain markets under certain conditions. There is no word on a timeframe for deployment of the software fix for Alcatel-Lucent's equipment.

Still thinking on this one.. Not for sure what to think

Yes, in fact if you look at it globally, the US cell companies are doing quite decent compared to their circumstances.

Although service in Europe is much better (i never had dropped calls in sweden / denmark), and the price is a bit lower, national companies in european countries have MUCH LESS area to cover. Additionally, Europeans cross travel a lot, and thats where the HUGE margins come in (calling in from neighboring countries). Look at the size of sweden or denmark and compare it to the US. A huge cell network like ATT costs a ******** to build and maintain.

In developing countries, you pay much more for ******** service. Stuff like 3g is available at a ridiculous premium and only available in the capital / main regional capital cities if at all.

I am happy in what I am currently paying, and being able to travel around the US and more or less get service.

Just sell the damn thing officially unlocked like recently in the UK and before in many other countries!!

Customers will be happy to choose their carrier and a lot of people will not have any more reasons to complain (although I'm sure they will find something else to complain about but that's not the point).

Then AT&T would have to step up or move to the side, competition is always the best incentive to take things up a notch.

I have been using my officially unlocked OZ purchased iphone (3G and 3Gs, tried purchasing the iPhone 4 in Glasgow but they had ran out) in Dubai(and worldwide since fortunately I get to travel to 4 continents sometimes in the same month) without a single problem, when in Eurpoe I use my prepaid Vodafone and in Australia I use 3 without a problem, In Dubai we have the shi**est operators on the planet (maybe, lol), if not just google: Dubai Etisalat and see for yourself.

Apple stores have microcells in them. You can even buy one.

http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/why/3gmicrocell/

Uhmm.. This failure happened in a Apple Store.. There was no microcell in this apple store or for that matter any apple store in the Kansa City area.. Normally when a iPhone is connected to a microcell it says M-Cell on the top bar of the iPhone and I have never seen that in my town..

Part of this reason I made this video was because I read someone saying that Apple Stores have microcells or mini towers or some crap and I was proving they don't at least where I live.

Going to the Driod X

Well not to start anything, but I just went and played with the Driod X at a verizon store and I think I'm moving. I do love my iPhone, but I don't want to be stuck with AT&T for another two years (after upgrading to iPhone 4). This network problem is the last straw for me. It's only going to get worse in my opinion, I'm sure Verizon will eventually have these problems too but they have a 2-3 yr jump on the strain of smartphone users.

Most of the Apple Stores have repeaters in them. Other than a stronger signal, your phone won't display anything differently.

It's always something AT&T; if it wasn't for the iPhone I would drop AT&T in a heartbeat

**** happens, jesus!

your contract doesn't guaranty speed, just like your ISP doesn't guaranty speed. They will fix it and you guys to move on to the next conspiracy theory!

What verizon store were you at that had a Droid X that you could use? They dont come out till July 15th. I've been to each vzw store here and looked for them, not a single one of them had them yet, not even a demo model.

It was a BJ's Kiosk(sp?). It wasn't hooked up to service, but it powered up and I was able to browse the phone, use the camera, try out typing.

The guy had it behind a counter. I was going to look at the Incredible, but they guy was like "We have no idea when more are coming in"...so after a little while talking to the guy, he pulled out the X from a box and powered it up. It was nice cause it wasn't tied to any security line, so I could get the real feel of the phone in my hand and pocket.
