network configuration changes

I'm not 100% certain whether it was the carrier update or the iOS 8.1.2 update, since I applied them in close proximity, but on the iPhone 6 with both, there are three new network interfaces configured. Using the Hurricane Electric "Network Tools" app, or the apparently abandon-ware ip6config app, what I see new is:

IPSEC0, IPSEC1 and PDP_IP1 (Cellular data) are now configured with both link local AND public ipv6 addresses. Whois reports the public addresses as being owned by AT&T Mobility LLC.

Before, no IPSEC interfaces were configured, and only the first Cellular Data (PDP_IP0) was configured, with an ipv4 address.

Carrier update December 2014

Hi,

What's in this new carrier update I was just informed about? A new feature? A fix?

App Inquiry?

Here is what I got when I just ran a SpeedTest (the first since the carrier update) and it is by far the fastest speeds I've ever seen on any of my phones. Don't know if it is due to the carrier update, but if so, it's nice.

Ran it again a few times:

Second test - 59.7 down, 18.1 up, 49ms ping.
Third test - 91.0 down, 19.7 up, 45ms ping

What app is that? I don't recognize it.

Thanks,
Andrew

People, it's Voice over LTE. it will enhanced your voice quality. Your data speed will remain the same

Look at the ATT coverage map linked to previously in this post to show if VoLTE (HD Voice) is available in your area.

When first receiving or calling, have had people tell me that they can't hear me or it's cutting out. When they or I call back, they hear me fine. Happens all the time! Hopefully, this 18.1 update will cure the problem!??
In Dallas, using iPhone 6+. Wife has same problem on her 6+.

This happened to me a few times so far on 3 different 6+'s. I get a call, i pick up, i hear the caller fine, but they report they can barely hear me. Hang up call back, and its ok.

I'm sure its Voice over LTE growing pains. There's no way that 3 phones had the same problem.

I haven't had the problem though in almost a week. And have also done the 18.1 carrier update.

I now ask "can you hear me" when i pick up a call. I'll have to do that for the next few weeks i guess lol

Cannot believe the NYC market is not on the AT&T VoLTE network yet. When NYC, Albany, or Buffalo get it, the closer it is to coming to my area.

Even though I live in a relatively small city, ~70,000 people, any provider in my city, but definitely AT&T & Verizon first get the latest technologies very quickly...even before vastly larger, and I mean vastly³ larger markets. Why, you ask? The New York State Thru-Way runs right through my city, and they like to keep everyone traveling on the NYS-TW connected to the best available technology available. So I would imagine we will be seeing this relatively soon, even though NO where in New York State is there a VoLTE network.

:apple:

Traffic Monitor. I got it to track data usage (which it doesn't seem to be particularly accurate at) but it also has the speed test function.

Thanks! Most data usage apps aren't that accurate. The regular speed test app hasn't updated and is loaded with ads, I'm actively seeking an alternative.

OK, so I never really payed that much attention to it before so I would like a little clarification please. SO when you make a call, am I correct in assuming that the LTE, WIFI symbol next to ATT changes to 4G if you are making your call on 4G? AND it will stay on LTE if you are making a VoLTE call?

Yes...It's a network symbol not WiFi though. Don't confuse it with WiFi calling which will launch in 2015. If you're in a VoLTE service area your phone will remain on LTE during the call transmitting over the data network rather than the voice network. If you're in a NON-VoLTE service area you phone will fall back to 4G while it uses the voice network. Only iPhone 6 and 6+'s received the 18.1 VoLTE update as it is the only device apple manufactures with VoLTE capability.

I was reading the thread and I noticed that when I got a call this morning the WIFI symbol didn't switch to the 4G like someone mentioned. That led me to think that I may have been be using wifi calling. I have a a iphone 6 and have the latest updates.

If your connected to WiFi at the time of a call it will not switch to 4G. It will stay connected to WiFi. Always been the case.

not necessarily true. this very well could have enabled carrier aggregation for more phones than previously had it enabled. I was just in Chicago with 18.0 and could not exceed 30mb down, so when I get back there next week, i'll see if VoLTE works and speeds are in fact increased. 18.1 did nothing for me here in Evansville, speeds are still HORRIBLE.

same here on 8.2 and 18.1

My 6 usually displays LTE during calls and I'm still on 18.0

Thoughts?

(I'm in the Atlanta market if it matters)

VoLTE was working here in Chicago under 18.0. I just downloaded 18.1 and the speeds seem similar.

It's very possible the 18.0 had a test market for VoLTE in certain areas. It was launched about the time the iPhone 6/6+ and iOS 8.
