I'm still running the benm hack on 3.0 and it's working great. Updating only the carrier file allowed me to still have MMS upgrades as well.
:D

Already have tethering

I hope AT&T never releases tethering officially. I already have it with them (hacked version of course) and it runs great. If they released tethering, that would mean i'd have to share the network even more. No I think I like the speeds i'm getting right now. If you guys would stop being so ignorant and look up how to jailbreak your phones you would have tethering too.

You don't even need a jailbreak for most methods. Quit waiting for AT&T. Take matters into your own hands.

When is the exclusive deal over?

I just want to be done with them at this point. I have a 1st gen Edge iPhone and as much as I want 3G and GPS, I don't want to lock in to a contract with this awful company to get it.

I've been tethering since Apr 2007 when I bought my first, first gen iPhone. But it's becoming increasingly unnecessary, as practically every hotel has wifi these days.

If I'm out a the beach and want to see the the wind forecast, I'm not exactly going to pull out a laptop. I can just use the iPhone.

Basically I need tethering any time I need a full screen and/or a full keyboard and there's no wifi, but there is a good digital cell single.

I commonly tether in airports, too. There's always wifi but it's always $5 or $10 and heck, I've already paid for unlimited internet on my cell contract. Came in handy during the last hurricane, too, when the power and cable was out, but the cell service lasted longer.

Mostly I'm just web browsing an email. Only a few times have I hooked up bittorrent and downloaded a TV show or 2.

The confusion seems to stem from a November 2008 interview with AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega in which he claimed support for tethering on the iPhone was coming "soon". In re-reporting the conversation, CNET appears to have construed the comment as meaning some time in 2009, but AT&T is apparently now trying to temper any such expectations.

How long are they expecting to wait before they add it then?

Everybody remember this when it comes time to pay that AT&T bill. Tell them you'll pay it "soon". After all, the holidays will be a strain on your budget. :D

AT&T fails.

Jeez guys!

I'm in UK so don't know all the politics of AT&T but I'm amazed they haven't offered tethering yet!

We had MMS and tethering since 3.0! O2 was totally ready for it as it was the iPhone that was the hold up not the network.

Is this just AT&T or is it across the board? I'd jump ship as soon as they open it up to over carriers.

We're getting Orange and Vodaphone here soon so hopefully a little competition will drive prices down a bit.

Bets that the "network tuning" consists of the next iPhone being on another carrier?

Correct me if I am a little off here, but when the release of the iphone happened AT&T had problems, and going to 3G they had serious problems, no support for the MMS for over a year and still they have problems.

AT&T taking on the iPhone has caused if anything, them to jump through there ass to upgrade there network and the cheesy networks that they bought out around the US.

They have too many stores, "at least in my area" and reps who do not know jack about the device or services offered.

At least Verizon's network is far more stable and up to date. I'm waiting to see what apples going to bring out for a new & improved iphone next year, if its no big deal than the current iPhone i own is going to become an iPod.

So whats new? AT&T consists of 3 monkeys who know nothing about anything, ofc they can't get tethering working. I mean they took like a year or so to introduce MMS? Us in the rest of the world been having it for like 7 years now, way to go AT&T, really fast ;)

It's greed.... that's all that is. Constant whining about their poor network being overloaded but I see that fat f#@!k peddling the wireless netbook for 60 bucks per month every two minutes on TV!

In their world they would like to charge you $60 for each device you own.... How about STOP SELLING to new customers until your network catches up?

Tethering? Don't need it. I have a free aircard from Sprint anyways and they do all that I need. Company policy here. How often do I use it? Never. As far as AT&T being garbage, not for me here in Houston. I can't wait for the day that everyone decides to leave when exclusivity ends so I can hog even more bandwidth.

At&t

AT&T will be the last wireless company to have 4G. I can not understand why teh iPhone was never developed with at least a tri-band radio to cover GSM, CDMA, & LTE.

If Apple wanted to make more profit and cut production costs that would be the way to go.

It would work on any US network and you would be able to have other sources for service. Then AT&T would not be stipulating what it's crappy network will allow.

Verizon iPhone in 2010 please.

Because adding both GSM and CDMA adds a lot of electronics and mass and volume and increases battery usage. There is no synergy to the two standards. The iPhone that supported both would not be the sleek, sexy device you see today.

Verizon will begin to migrate to their 4G LTE infrastructure next year (is there a map for that?) which will be compatible with the AT&T 4G network allegedly rolling out beginning in 2011. It should be possible at that point to build an iPhone to support LTE that is backward compatible with the GSM/EDGE network, which should create more options for alternate iPhone carriers in the US like Verizon.

What we know for certain is that the Sprint 4G network will only be compatible with itself, which likely takes them out of contention (if they don't go belly up or sell out their wireless business to the highest bidder between now and then).
