I am done with AT&T. I hope Apple goes to Verizon in the US next year. I am going to learn more about jailbreaking and going t-mobile where data is included and monthly bill will be half the cash.

I'm looking into this this weekend.
Taking the $200 penalty for terminating the AT&T contract will probably still be a lot cheaper in the long run if I switch now.

If AT&T had a $50 a month package deal for the iphone, I'd reluctantly stay, but paying this much for limited, spotty service and encouraging a lazy, moneygrubbing leech of a company to continue in its ways is something I won't do. 2+ years of this is enough, I'm not doing two more.

Nice phone apple, but lousy carrier.

Just did an AT&T update and notice Tethering Data under usage, is that new?

New update, I just upgraded to 3.1.2 and the Tethering Data under usage is now gone. Interesting.

My iphone is unbroken just a standard out of the box 3GS.

I admit Im a little clueless on cellphone jazz, but tell me something:
I also have ATT. I used to have nTelos with my trusty little candybar Nokia. never lost a call, called from ANYWHERE. Paid like 35 bucks a month for unltd.
OK I hadda have an iphone. Im an applenut.
If I JB my iphone and break my contract....does that mean I can just use my iphone with another carrier?
If I can, are there only certain ones who will be able to handle it?
OR would they just offer basic phone service and I would use the wifi capapbilities?
BTW if I get rid of phone service and buy another iphone, will the old one still function as an ipod/wifi toy? Or is it a piece of plastic?
Appreciate any advise you can tender. Thanks

T-Mobile is your only option. And it's edge only. But cheaper!

That is the extent of my knowledge.... there are a bunch of posts on it here though!

What would be the point of changing if you cant get 3g? There has to be a better way. Ive heard that Jailbreaking allows you to use any provider you want. I admit I dont know either. I JB'ed my iphone just to see what it would be like but most of the changes were just cosmetic(to me) probably more for someone who programs.

User Guide for tethering I phone 3GS

Even the guide claims the tethering switch is there, (hidden?) and I was told at the AT&T store that it tethered when I bought it, even after I bought it, and had spent over $400 including accessories plus the 2 year commitment, instead of an air card which I now need for my lap to use flash. Anybody else highly dissapointed and totally pissed?

You are totally NOT alone. I spent serious €€€ on that device so that it comes unlocked and so I could use all features for the carrier of my choice. But still Apple disallows tethering even on that device. It is ridiculous.

Because adding both GSM and CDMA adds a lot of electronics and mass and volume and increases battery usage. There is no synergy to the two standards. The iPhone that supported both would not be the sleek, sexy device you see today.

Other current phones with both GSM and CDMA are within a millimeter or two of the iPhone's size. Shouldn't increase battery usage, either. Just turn the unused radio off.

Verizon will begin to migrate to their 4G LTE infrastructure next year (is there a map for that?) which will be compatible with the AT&T 4G network allegedly rolling out beginning in 2011.

It would be a little surprising if Verizon and ATT built compatible LTE networks... unless Congress (or their parent Vodafone) made them do so. Why would either company make it easy for people to switch carriers?

For example, they could use different frequencies and/or different voice protocols.

I've had very few problems with ATT coverage, but the lack of tethering is pathetic. For all the hammering on Windows Mobile, it's had tethering built in for years now, across the board, without any carrier-demand shenanigans. That's the problem with ATT+iPhone--too much control from the carrier, to the phone's detriment.

(I'm sure I'm an anomaly in the big picture of iPhone users, but I went from an iPhone to a Nokia E90 (S60 Symbian smartphone), then to my current match, a Softbank X02HT (branded HTC Cavalier).

I will not get an iPhone until i can tether legally.

I will not get an iPhone until i can tether legally.

Was hoping this new version would solve that. It just does not make sense to pay for wireless at home and the AT&T data plan.

If they don't come out with it by december i'll seriously look into the other options out there. I can't even find a way to email AT&T to tell them that.

Its too bad really because i am a mac head. They are loosing out on a lot of business.
