I admit I dont use it much, but I have tethering on my iPhone. Im in the US on ATT with a legit non jail-broke phone. Thanks NetShare! Too bad it was pulled from the App Store long ago.

Maybe I'm wrong about this, but if network neutrality "is free of restrictions on content, sites, or platforms, on the kinds of equipment that may be attached, and on the modes of communication allowed, as well as one where communication is not unreasonably degraded by other communication streams," then shouldn't the FCC be fighting to get NetShare back in the App Store?

I want to know what colour font he used.

Lucky for you, there's an easy way to find out: read the original article that this story links to. ;)

And to answer your question, it appears to be a shade of navy blue (possibly purple--I'm colorblind). :D

Ohh AT&T, isn't it amazing what level of customer indifference you can get away with when you have no competition in the iPhone market? If we had multi-carrier support in this country, you can bet that we would be in a bragging war as to who can bring you these features first.

Not that I would necessarily change carriers if it were an open market (I've been with AT&T mobile for 10 years), but that sort of competition benefits all customers and inevitably the carriers as well.

zactly, I am so leaving AT&T and my $180 bill behind when the iPhone is available elsewhere

Goddamn, what a disappointment. WTF did 9 to 5 feel they needed to make an issue of that? :(

Well my understanding is that net neutrality concerns whether the network provider can filter content, etc.. I don't think it can force an application distributor (e.g. Apple's app store) to distribute a given application. That is, Apple is free to list or not list any application it likes on its store, but if someone already has a certain application, AT&T is not allowed to filter its content. That's my best guess anyway...

Well, this is really a lose-lose situation.

I lose: I can't upgrade to 3.1.x so I can keep my tethering.
AT&T loses: They won't let me give them extra $ per month.

I am done with AT&T. I hope Apple goes to Verizon in the US next year. I am going to learn more about jailbreaking and going t-mobile where data is included and monthly bill will be half the cash.

Is tethering something that the general population would use that much?

I don't think I would have much use for it ... laptop internet access in small communities (ie no wifi available?)

What is the market for it?

In rural areas (in this context, not a hotspot) where you do not have broadband and when traveling on business, 3G is an asset. If you are going to buy a 3G dongle, you might as well get the Verizon mobile hotspot so you can get more hot spots nationwide and wifi for all computers and devices within range of it. And very few iPhones hogging their network . . . yet.

Stuff like this is precisely why I will never buy an iPhone while it's exclusive to AT&T. An iPod Touch will suffice until the deal ends.

Agreed.

Until they officially support it, I'll be sticking with 3.0. I hate how useless AT&T is.

They can't handle the load from iphone users, yet they just agreed to subsidize Nokias netbook? We're ****ed.

I don't understand. If you *hate* ATT so much, why not use another carrier? Why would anyone do busines with someone they *hate*? You do understand there is more than one cell phone carrier?

Just to spite AT&T, Apple should put NetShare back up onto the App Store for a one week period. That way they can play it off as "oh, oops, sorry, one of our App Store techs must have pressed the wrong button in the middle of the night by accident...".

It is crap like this that is causing me NOT to upgrade from me 2G iPhone to the 3GS model. If Apple is going to dump AT&T then so am I. I don't want to be in a fresh contract and hear the news come out that Verizon is a new option at a cheaper price.

There is a very simple reason why AT&T has not offered tethering yet.....it would bring their network to it's knee's. This isn't about fine tuning. The naked truth is that they do not have the capacity to support the data traffic that would generate.

I don't see the big deal. ATT did not support tethering when I bought my phone. They will support it when they are ready. If I needed to have tethering before they had it ready, I would have bought a different phone. Did someone force anyone to buy a phone that didn't do what you are clamoring for it to do. Perspective people.

Maybe I'm optimistic, but I have a feeling that even if tethering were made available free of charge to everyone who has an iPhone 3G or 3GS (and an unlimited data plan) without charge (seriously, who wants to tether over edge?), maybe 1 or 2% of people who have iPhones would even bother to use it. I'd be willing to bet that most people who have an iPhone already have access to broadband internet at home/work/school. Why would anyone choose to tether over 3G when they have that kind of access?
For the times when we're away from our free WiFi coverage? :p

It is the fact that...

AT&T is limiting the iPhone! Netshare was great in its' time but could hang up once in a while if the iPhone went to sleep. So I went to cricket and got an unlimited broadband USB stick for another $40 a month. AT&T I'd be willing to pay for the same service that is offered on other handsets, but since AT&T see's me as just a dollar sign as opposed to a valued customer, as soon as the exclusive arrangement is gone, I'll be off to a new carrier, along with a lot of other moola cows...

I think AT&T will be changing their tune once the Android phones with tethering included hit Verizon. You know, "There is a map for that."

You know if they keep doing this, something bad is going to happen to their HQ and employees.

So let's start our own MacRumors funded wireless carrier. I'm really sick and tired of all these excuses and not actually doing anything. So what equipment does one actually need? :p

I know that you're not being serious, but just for comparison's sake: One of the carriers here in NZ just rolled out a new network at a cost of about US$425 million. For a country the size of the US, you're looking at a lot of money!

HEHE

We have internet tethering in the UK right now. Its great. I posted this using it!

America - technology backwater!

Yeah - government control normally helps with that.

I live in Mountain View. Google, Yahoo, Apple all within five miles of me. Yeah I totally live in a technology backwater.

Listen pal... you're ruled by the English. 'nuf said.

Getting a Blackberry with Verizon tomorrow. Not completely related, but.....the iPhone has lost it's allure with me, and this article doesn't help.

Why is it that almost every thread as of late has an America bashing comment in it. What's happening over there across the pond?

1) I don't really see why everybody'd be so excited. Are you really willing to pay an extra $30/month for iPhone tethering? It's not going to be free.

2) This is why I'm still on 3.0. Thanks BenM!

3) I'm sure the reason why AT&T is so scared is that a lot of us would cancel our home broadband plans. Why spend $40/mo. for broadband when you can have a tethered iPhone? That's a lot of bandwidth.
