So I'll say again... Att confirmed I am out of contract on my iphone 5, and thank you to some of the other commenters. I put in a case request to the department that does the unlocks. I will also do it online again tomorrow.

Never mind what the rep said, it hasn't been 24 months since Sept 21, 2012 so you do have to wait out the 14 day return period.

I just did a live chat on my iPhone n they approved the unlock in less than 5 min lol. Still gonna wait till my new baby arrives before I unlock.

Except he's not out of contract. See post #4. iPhone 5 was released Sept 21st so even if they pushed the OP's upgrade date to the beginning of the month, he's technically still under contract until that or whatever date the iPhone 5 was obtained.

at&t's pushing your upgrade eligibility to the beginning of the month doesn't mean your contract is done.

I would refer you to post #8 and post #24 one where the OP said he is out of contract.

I'll say again. I had my iPhone 5 unlocked as have others on this thread, already, and it is not Sept 21st 2014 yet.

It doesn't matter what the OP claims, just that if it's been 24 months since starting the contract unless it was device swapped, etc.

So have I about a year ago, but that was because I device swapped the 5s from another line to my line and I waited the required 14 day period before they unlocked the offed year-old iPhone 5. It depends on the circumstance, but if the reps are giving the OP trouble and telling him he must wait out the 14-day return period it's a very strong indication that he's not actually out of contract yet.

What the heck, I just submitted a request.

eta: That was fast!

See my post above this one.

My iPhone 5 was delivered on 09/21/12, contract was supposed to end 9/18. AT&T changed it last week to 09/12.

So they want you to wait 14 days so you don't just upgrade, unlock, return your upgrade, profit.

The fact that others got theirs unlocked is irrelevant. I always get my upgrade fee waived. Some report trouble. Depends on who you get to help you sometimes.

Really though, 14 days wait sure isn't enough for me to call the carrier "scum" mad say "I am happy I left them" lol. Some people are so dramatic.

Guess thats another reason i like att next. i just unlocked both of my phones, no issues, and selling them to fund the new iPhone. Once the phone is paid for you can unlock. No contracts ever again.

If at&t changed the ending date of your contract (not upgrade eligibility) to 9/12, then it makes sense they would honor the unlock request today.

To clarify, it was upgrade eligibility. When I checked tonight I noticed the contract ended on the 12th. Which should have been next week.

So it was supposed to be upgrade eligibility but at&t moved the contract ending date to the 12th as well? Either way, it makes sense that they'd honor the online unlock request since today is the 14th.

They moved both eligibility and contract. Either way, I am happy. My iPhone 4 was painless as well two-years ago.

FYI to all, ATT unlocked my iphone 5 last night.... After an online chat the case I had opened with the unlock team earlier in the day was escalated and by 8pm pst my request was approved and the device unlocked. Thanks for all the help.

I paid off my remaining Next balances on 2 phones, so now I own the phones. I unlocked one within minutes of the first one Saturday. This morning I asked for mine to be done and nothing yet.

I do have a question about this unlocking though. My phone which I requested this morning will still be in use till Friday and than sell it off. Do I have to restore it to natural state than use my backup to reload and than be able to use it.

Appreciate any help here

i get a email back saying they won't unlock my iphone 5 because i've "reached the maximum number of unlock requests during a given period".

this is the first time EVER that we've even asked to have a phone unlocked????

Get on chat and escalate, my request was approved in ~10 minutes.

I'm all set now just took about a hour to get the final unlock. I also backed up, retired and confirmed I was unlocked than redid my backup. All worked well

How do you reapply when it states that you have to wait 14 days? I tried to escalate in AT&T chat and no dice.

Att denied unlock request

Just off the phone with ATT. They told me:
You must wait 14 days from when you ordered your new iphone to unlock.
If you activate your new iphone and port your existing number before 14 days, you will not be allowed to unlock your old phone.

Ridiculous

Standard policy unless you're completely out of contract. This is to prevent people from unlocking the old device while still under contract during the 14-day return period of the new device then returning new iPhone. You may be able to circumvent this policy by escalating it as several members did.

If you activate your new iphone and port your existing number before 14 days, you will not be allowed to unlock your old phone.

I call BS on this one.

iphone unlock denied

BS? or not Jay. You were not the one on the phone with ATT.

BTW I have not been on contract for 5 years so lets not talk about customer fraud. Lets talk about ATT fraud!

Sorry, but they unlocked mine and I haven't received the new phone yet and I still had a year left on my contract.

Same here. I just made the request while reading this thread, confirmed the request and within a couple of minutes I got the message saying that they have approved the request.
