Games more games from the wireless companies. One more opportunity to up sell you every time one comes in contact with any department. Easy for them to convince you to over buy. The only goal from all these plans. Nothing to do with the customer needs. If they truly had customer in mind they would have one plan, like the utility bill. Pay for what you use by the month. Metered service products that sell at a fixed rate per month, a scam.

Advice needed: I have an AT&T grandfathered unlimited data plan from the days of the iphone 3g. I pay ~$90/month for my single line with “unlimited” text and data, and (basically) voice. I’m in California.

I stay on this because I always heard that the new plans are ****, but lately I’ve been hearing I could get a good plan for >$50/month.

Any thoughts/advice on better companies/plans?

I’m paying like $50 for unlimited text, talk and 16GB of LTE, 3G speeds after that, all of which can be used as hotspot, too, and the spam protection add-on.

You're saying you have a 40GB limit using hotspot in the US? 😂 LMAO!
Here in Italy you can get a 100GB sim prepaid plan for ~ $ 12 a month, and you're free to use the data as you like. Oh, and it includes unlimited free phone calls and sms 😉
Just imagine how happy AT&T's engineers would be if they were told they only had to worry about providing service to Arizona.

That would be nice, wouldn't it? :)

If you use a lot of data... then you should PAY for a lot of data. Simple!

And light users would have a tiny bill if they rarely use data outside the home or office away from WIFI.

I wonder what the average data-usage is? Though it seems like the heavy users would be subsidizing the light users in your scenario. There would still be people who are unhappy.

I see your point.

However... doesn't AT&T have engineers who only work in certain states?

They're not sending the same guys from Arizona 2,000 miles away to work in North Carolina, are they?

Right, at a whopping 0.05% APR I'll be rolling in it. lol.
One can get 0.5% from Marcus by Goldman Sachs, and several credit unions offer more, however, whatever it is, it is more than nothing and it gives you flexibility in case of an emergency.

The rest of the world is pay per use, the disadvantage of it is that they can’t offer cellphones under contracts for that reason because Or under financing options, but my family still wishes they shared my plans because they spend more money refilling their pre paid cards than an actual plan a month.

I always kept my data below 30gb a month on usage but because of the lossless/Dolby atmos and hi Res setbacks my plan last month ended at 125gb of use, the difference was monumental

The point was that every AT&T (and for that matter almost every other U.S. carrier) plan covers the whole U.S. vs. smaller territories and lets me keep my phone number no matter where I move.

Ah I see.

And because the Unites States is so large... a carrier like AT&T must pay the salaries of more workers across all those states just to keep the network running.

The AT&T engineers tend to stay local. Different story for the contract engineering firms that operators rely on. They're the ones traveling 1,000 miles or more to build out a market.

It's like that in radio and TV, too. There's a chronic shortage of tower crews, engineers and other specialists due to factors such as the TV spectrum repack.

Great money if you don't mind being away from home for long stretches.

So with this news, I just tried to switch to the Unlimited Elite plan from my older Unlimited Plus (formerly the best plan), and the AT&T website showed me a price of $50/mo per line for the switch, which actually lowered my bill. Then as I was about to check-out the website logged me out for inactivity!?!? I logged back in and repeated the steps and now the plan is $10 more per line per month which raises my total bill considerably. Anyone else experience this or know why I was getting different (perhaps promotional) pricing before I was logged out? I called AT&T and got the typically unhelpful phone attendant that simply said the price is the price. What a crock of ****.

Every time I contact AT&T, for any reason, I get a hard, lengthy, sales pitch on plans/hardware. Over and over from several people, even on the same call, as the transfer me. I'm sorry, but their online reps have replaced car sales people on my "burn in Hell list".

I will tell you this, it takes about 2-3 business months for all the new prices to take into effect, don’t get scared when they email you the CSS or the actual plan because it doesn’t include the discounts, your best bet is upgrading from the myat&t website or app which will show the discount and the plan after taxes and all promos eligible if that helps you out. Believe me I went from Plus to Extra and ended up with Elite and somehow my plan was cheaper with all the discounts set in place by $40usd to say the least.

I'll bet the bigger issue with covering a large area is it limits how many companies can do it realistically, limiting competition. And for home internet, there are local monopolies as a result too. Worst part is they provide crap service then use that as a reason to ask for subsidies.

For costs alone, the size of the country doesn't matter by itself, but the density does. If the US had proportionately more people than the UK for its size, a nationwide carrier would also have proportionately more users, but not so. The UK is 7.5X as dense as the US. The US carriers provide worse service in sparser areas, but they still need to cover them somewhat.

T-Mobile still lacks reliable coverage, at least in MN. I'm using the free "test drive" feature to compare to Verizon and, yes, when you CAN get 5G, it cannot be beat currently. That said, there are far too many times where I drop down to EDGE or even "no service" and when you get to 1-2 bars (which happens quite often) the service might as well be non-existent because ping is so high and data is below 1mbps.

I'd much rather take 40mbps basically EVERYWHERE than get pockets of 300mbps. 40mbps is still plenty fast to do most things I do with my phone, and when I am out driving, that's what I want.
T-Mobile coverage is bad in CA too. I think it's just bad everywhere. You get what you pay for.

Where? That's not the pricing I see when I search for Italian phone plans. Though it wouldn't surprise me if it were cheaper than here.

Eh, you just hold SPY and enjoy 10-36% YoY as long as you can afford to lose half of it if something goes wrong. 0.5% doesn't even come close to offsetting inflation.

But either way, if the phone payments are at less than 3% interest, it's pretty obviously better to pay later rather than now. Issue is some people just don't trust themselves with it or don't want to deal with it, which is fine.

You can use that to your advantage by asking how to cancel your service. They'll offer a better deal to keep you.

That's not necessarily the case if you take good care of your device and resell it at a good value (not just a trade-in, but a legit sale to someone else, like through Swappa or locally or something like that). This is especially true for iPhones that hold their value so much more than other OEM's devices.
What does that have to do with contracts? Once the phone is paid off, you can sell it. I think even before.

Definitely not a monopoly.

You know what Verizon can't do? Offer HBO Max to its customers for free.
how is it free? we moved to Comcast and it costs us 80.00 for both our phones with unlimited data. I can then afford to buy it and save a ton of money. its not free.

I logged into my account this morning (I have been on the unlimited elite since last year) and the plan seems to be updated, it now shows data usage out of unlimited (14.45GB of Unlimited). However the hotspot portion still shows 30 GB. I imagine that will get updated in due time. And the plans also seem to be updated on AT&T's website. Not that it mattered a whole lot for me, in my opinion 100 GB of data and 30 GB hotspot was more than plenty, but I will take the added bonus. I travel frequently so for me the added 10 GB hotspot will be nice. I was in an area of the country yesterday where internet access was an issue. It was nice being able to use the the hotspot to get all my business needs taken care of.

Wait, it didn't show "of Unlimited" before with this plan? Was it showing 100GB? I have an original grandfathered unlimited plan still and it has always shown "of Unlimited" on the meter but I was under the impression it de-prioritized at 22GB (although I have never witnessed it being de-prioritized). I have been contemplating switching to this new elite plan. Price wise it is similar to what I have now, but with taxes/fees I believe it will be slightly more expensive to switch.

No it didn't. It would always show "of 100 GB" being used, and also showed the amount used from the hotspot as well. Supposedly after going over 100 GB you could be throttled. I have never came close to that and I don't realistically seeing that happen since I am on WiFi majority of the time, but I suppose something could happen (me being on the road for a month) and using a ton of data. I think I stream more now when traveling since the Sirius XM app offers more channels than they do in my car, I have been finding myself doing that more and more on trips, so I could see my usage go up.

I have more than one line on my plan, after my company discount and the autopay discount, with having multiple lines (family members), it makes the cost very affordable. Basically my wife and kids are around $50 a month with taxes for each line and that is all I am paying for since my company reimburses me for my line. And to me $50 isn't that bad considering everything each line gets. I really don't have to worry about any data limitations.

It does not have to offset inflation, as the price of the device is fixed and is not affected by inflation. Any no risk investment is free money.

I pay $150 a month for 4 lines (physicians and nurses discounts). Teachers and first responders also get same discount and military. 5 lines is around $168 I think. For the ultimate elite plan

So depending on discounts and 4 or 5 lines. ATT is pretty competitive with T-Mobile and offers a lot. Taxes is another $25. So total is $175/4 lines for ultimate elite with HBO max no data throttling.

this is why I stick with att.

Verizon similar plan with free Disney plus hulu espn plus ($14 value) for 5 lines is $200. That’s what my brother pays for Verizon.

So in USA. 4-5 lines means decent deals. In Europe it’s mainly single lines
