I have to wait about ~20 seconds for the "AT&T WiFi" tag to show up, next to the airplane.

Then calling works. Is it enabled in the settings?

"AT&T Expands Wi-Fi Calling to Cover International Calls to U.S. When Traveling"

Why wouldn't it be free? It doesn't cost them anything.

Won't help Failbook much if I do not even have an account. As I avoid it like rabies.
Also, the point is to criticize them for even thinking about telling us to use it to call a foreign number when traveling...

Doesn't matter if you have a Facebook account, using WhatsApp is enough. They build a profile around your use of that app and then can still target you with the Facebook ad network which extends far far outside Facebook alone. Enjoy giving them text, voice, contact information, and more.

You do realize you don't have to travel to use those don't you? You can call Canadian or Mexican phones from the U.S.

Actually, if you're not on a Mobile Share Value Plan of 15 GB or higher, unlimited calling to Canada and Mexico from the U.S. is not included in your plan; but roaming in Mexico (if you proactively add it) and Canada (if you call Retentions and ask them to add it) including calls within those countries when you're there and also back to the U.S. is included. However, if you don't want to bump up to a 15+ GB MSV plan, unlimited calling to Canada and Mexico from the U.S. can be added for $5.00/month by adding the World Connect Value Package to your plan.

It also works on airplane WiFi for a while now...

Is it usable in terms of quality? Throughput and latency on in-flight Wi-Fi have been traditionally abysmal.
[doublepost=1458735012][/doublepost]So I guess this feature was one of the benefits of doing the Carrier update that I was prompted to do immediately after unlocking my phone after installing iOS 9.3. Good on you, AT&T!

Well please enlighten me then... When I'm in airplane mode but have wifi on, when I place call, I get a message that says i must disable airplane mode to place a call, with the options of cancel or disable.
It works for me too ... Stupid question, you are on 9.3 correct? Maybe try rebooting

What carrier version do you have then? I'm not sure I was prompted for a crier update post 9.3 install.
Thanks!

I never understood the whole Whatsapp/tango/viber craze. These features are built into every iPhone. If you are on wifi iMessage and FaceTime (video and audio) are free. No need to download any app. The only situation is if the other person doesn't have an iPhone. If they don't and I am away and it is really necessary to get in touch with them I will email them or spend the $2/min to call them.

AT&T, don't you guys know that you guys are still a rip off when I am traveling overseas?
Besides, have you guys at AT&T heard of an app called Whasapp? I can call using that on Wi-Fi to anyone in the world that has a smart phone with the app...
Now, tell me why in the world do I want to use your Wi-Fi calling to oversea numbers?

1. People who call your number; who don't use Whatsapp, can reach you internationally.
2. People who don't want to use Whatsapp and have What they talk about go through Whatsapps servers.
3. Its another benefit that ATT customers are getting with no change to their rates.

I have more, but I think you get the idea.

Because you can now call any number, not just another smartphone with a special app.

Order a pizza from while overseas and deliver it to your mom.

After upgrading to 9.3, promptly received the text from AT&T about international wireless. Sadly AT&T has a huge dead zone in the middle of East Bay town as they keep sending texts about adding a cell tower in an area that has good coverage and capacity. Guess this is a way to make up for that gap.

I don't know why I can't find this anywhere -- and perhaps it's a non-issue -- but can anyone with unlimited data (grandfathered) confirm that wifi calling doesn't affect your plan? I'd like to activate this, but as you can imagine one has to pause first due to the existence of fine print...

AT&T is also notifying customers about a change to NumberSync, which now allows devices linked to an iPhone to make or receive calls over an AT&T cellular connection, something that wasn't previously possible.

The NumberSync feature allows AT&T users to make calls and send text messages using their phone number from a device like an iPad or Mac even when their iPhone is turned off or in another location. Previously, devices had to be connected to Wi-Fi to use the feature, but starting today, a cellular iPad or other device with a cellular connection can use it to make NumberSync calls when a connected iPhone is unavailable.

Does anyone have any more information about this feature - making phone calls from a cellular connected iPad? I have ATT - an iPhone 6s+ and an LTE ipad mini 2. I've had them linked for a while now so I could receive calls on my iPad while it was connected to the same wifi network that my phone was. But the above quote makes it sound like this should work even when the iPad is not connected to a wifi network. I just tried it over my iPad's LTE and got the following prompt: "Call Failed: Connect to a Wi-Fi network to make phone calls."

I couldn't find anything explaining further how to make this work - anyone got any ideas?

EDIT - NEVERMIND - i just saw that my iPad never updated to 9.3. I thought that it did overnight. I think that's required for the new features to work.

Make sure you turn your cellular data of. Roaming at those prices is an accident you don't want. Isn't this essentially Skype/FaceTime?
I am pretty sure we will have to put the phone in airplane mode and then turn wifi on, because calls routed through cell network will be billed exorbitantly. I dont want to be the guinea pig that learns this the hard way.

Also add international call blocking feature as one more layer of security to prevent charging for international cell usage.

The person you're calling doesn't need a particular handset in order for you to use Wi-Fi calling. I think you're confusing Wi-Fi calling with HD Voice. Wi-Fi calling can be used when you're calling any number -- even a landline.

I'm not sure why Wi-Fi calling wouldn't work for you unless the Wi-Fi signal is poor, the internet connection behind the Wi-Fi is poor, or the system admins at your office have blocked the ports that are used by Wi-Fi calling.

When wi-fi calling was first enabled by ATT, I tried calling my friend's iPhone 5 and it would not connect. It's possible that certain ports on my friend's router, as well as where I work, need to be opened in order for wi-fi calling to work.

As far as HD-Voice is concerned, I am unaware if I have it or not.

WiFi calling is awesome. I was in an ER that blocked cell calls but offered free wifi. I was calling family while the staff was puzzled onto how i was doing it. You will love it. When you cannot make a call, with wifi, you now can.

Wi-fi calling was awesome when I was able to get it to work. The quality of the voice was on the same level as FaceTime audio.

T-Mobile's Mobile Without Borders is the best way to use a smartphone outside the United States, without a doubt.

All the other carriers are so behind in that aspect.

The best method, without a doubt, is to buy a local SIM card wherever you are. Did this recently on trips to France and Hong Kong and can't tell you the freedom it gives you to have 3-5GB of data for the duration of your stay without having to worry about your carrier ripping you off. Until my carrier (AT&T) offers some sort of reasonable/competitive alternative I will never give them a dime when travelling overseas. I also typically have $5 in Skype Credits which I use to make calls to anywhere and, at their international rates, lasts a very long time, and allows me to use my home number in the caller ID.

And while this announcement from AT&T is nice, it's still limited to interacting with the US. Not sure why they would continue to charge on other international calls made over Wifi since it doesn't cost them anything...frankly this seems like stealing.

Agreed. I'd consider returning to ATT (since their coverage and speed are really good where I live) but I travel overseas too much to give up what I get from T Mobile.

So AT&T joins T-Mobile and Verizon with this. No idea about Sprint (are they even still in business?).

T-Mobile's Canada & Mexico add-on is also free for those on newer postpaid plans. Those on grandfathered plans can get it at $10 per month.

Verizon charges $2 a day for it.

And I think Sprint offers something nearly identical to T-Mo everywhere outside the US... but, I can't be bothered to double check. :p

When abroad, how can I make sure my iPhone is only using wifi calling? Eg, how can I force it to use Wifi calling only?

Keep your phone in Airplane Mode from the minute you leave the US, until you land back.

I have the 20gb data plan, but ATT wont give me unlimited calling to Mexico/Canada because my current plan was actually a 10gb plan that they doubled a little over a year ago. Only way I can get it is if I downgrade to a 15gb which I'm not too happy about
