That is true. Most (if not all) of the benefits they're adding are only available on Mobile Share Value plans and maybe the new "Unlimited" plan.
I was confirmed with retention if I put antenna on the roof and get new UDP they can add Canada/Mexico bonus

Argh. I totally forgot about this while I was in Indonesia. It would have come in handy.

I like to give credit where credit is due, but I'm not giving AT&T any credit for being slightly less greedy. More than likely this wasn't a big revenue generator for them and it didn't cost them anything.

I suspect the real reason AT&T enabled it is because Wi-Fi calling went live for Verizon iPhone users with iOS 9.3 and Verizon's Wi-Fi calling allows international use with calls to U.S. numbers at no charge. AT&T is just keeping pace with the competition.

It's not a big deal. It's a little deal that makes calling back to the US for free a bit more convenient for people with iPhones and AT&T plans.

If you have an iPhone on an AT&T plan, you likely got a text about it. A text. Just a text. A tiny little text. Not a big deal.

Yes on ATT UNLIMITED, no text.

And yes, no big deal, so not even worth mentioning. Anybody on MR knows all the work arounds.

Not really.

AT&T's Mobile Share plans now have Canada/Mexico roaming as a free add-on.

I logged into AT&T's site to look at my Mobile Share plan. I don't see any mention of 'Canada/Mexico roaming as a free add-on'. Does that mean cellular free calls and SMS texts -- but not data?. Assuming so, I'll continue to look for this online, unless this is one of those annoying things you have to call and ask for explicitly...

Keep your phone in Airplane Mode from the minute you leave the US, until you land back.

Airline mode disables wifi, so that doesn't make sense.

I'm experienced managing my usage while abroad, just wondering how wifi calling slots works in this situation. Guess I'll have to try it out while traveling, though the next destination is China, which ATT states doesn't work with WIFI calling.

Why is Verizon so behind the curve on cellphone technology? Where is their NumberSync? I want to call using my other icloud devices without having my cellphone be on the same network!

"Mexico Roaming Bonus" is available under International Features. "Canada Roaming Bonus" is available by calling the 800 number and saying "retentions" to the voice prompt.

You do need a Mobile Share plan, or the new Directv Unlimited Data plan.

Each allows for unlimited calling and text to and from each respective country, and each has their own 1 GB data bucket to use while roaming. Additional data is charged at $20/GB

America is not a continent, North America and South America are. Two continents, not one. Perhaps you should brush up on your geography.
First, let me say the "America is a continent not a county" argument is pedantic and out of touch with the reality of association with the word America. Even lost tribes in the Brazilian rain rainforest, what little is left, know that means the USA.

That said, the number of continents is not universally accepted. Europe and Asia, for example, are often considered one continent (Eurasia). Likewise, North and South America, though I'd say they qualify as separate continents more than Europe and Asia.

You turn Wi-Fi back on after you enable Airplane Mode. The two settings can both be enabled simultaneously.

Yep, also Apple recently "fixed" airplane mode so it doesn't turn off the GPS chipset. This was a problem in that navigation software that uses locally stored maps wouldn't work if you were in airplane mode in a foreign country. Since GPS is only a receiver, there's no reason to turn it off on an airplane, so they fixed this oversight. :)

T-Mobile's Mobile Without Borders is the best way to use a smartphone outside the United States, without a doubt.

All the other carriers are so behind in that aspect.

THat's one of the reasons I changed back to T-Mobile when they finally offered the iPhone. I LOVE being able to use my data plan and wifi calling when I'm out of the USA. Before then, I would jump through all sorts of hoops (dealing with SIM cards in foreign languages, preloading info on the hotel wifi so I might have it after I leave the room, etc.). So nice to just use my phone the same way no matter where I am.

I got this text yesterday. This will be handy when I'm on a cruise next week. So perfect timing, AT&T.

The best method, without a doubt, is to buy a local SIM card wherever you are. Did this recently on trips to France and Hong Kong and can't tell you the freedom it gives you to have 3-5GB of data for the duration of your stay without having to worry about your carrier ripping you off. Until my carrier (AT&T) offers some sort of reasonable/competitive alternative I will never give them a dime when travelling overseas. I also typically have $5 in Skype Credits which I use to make calls to anywhere and, at their international rates, lasts a very long time, and allows me to use my home number in the caller ID.

And while this announcement from AT&T is nice, it's still limited to interacting with the US. Not sure why they would continue to charge on other international calls made over Wifi since it doesn't cost them anything...frankly this seems like stealing.

I tried that on a trip to Italy and Greece. All the sim instructions were in Italian and I couldn't find a way to get it on english (and I tried asking for help from a local but they couldn't figure it out either.) So when I needed more data I couldn't figure out how to do it. Being able to use my T-Mobile data just like I do at home is a million times easier.

Have to agree with that! I'm glad T-Mobile got the deals before anybody else.

Since you're a fan of technicalities, "America" is not a continent either. Classes and textbooks in the US teach the difference between North America and South America.

America is not a continent, North America and South America are. Two continents, not one. Perhaps you should brush up on your geography.

You both are funny, like I said geography classes in the US are horrible, just look at both your posts.
Out of all the countries that are in America, only the US uses the 7 continent model instead of the standard 6 continent model. The US used to use the 6 continent model until WWII so you should brush up on it @darngooddesign . Still even if you want to use the less common 7 model they are still continents @igorsky lol.

You guys let me know when the olympics break america into two rings. (Antartica is not part of the games of course)

I don't understand where you're coming from. You seem annoyed that AT&T is giving us a way to do this without all the workarounds.
Not at all.

We agree, no big deal and thus not front page news is my point related to MR readers.

Also, pointing out that Wi-fi over ATT is not entirely true for everybody.
They do not offer it for grandfathered unlimited plans.
Same for Hot Spot - not for grandfathered Unlimited plans.

I found the following after surfing around a bit on AT&T's site:

Unlimited Talk & Text to Canada and Mexico
All Mobile Share Value plans and the AT&T Unlimited Plan include unlimited messaging to the world1 including Mexico and Canada.

Our currently available Mobile Share Value plans of 15GB or higher, and the AT&T Unlimited Plan, include Unlimited Talk & Text from the U.S. to Canada and Mexico2.

For Mobile Share Value plans with less than 15GB or for other AT&T plans, add AT&T World Connect Value® for $5/mo. per line to a domestic postpaid voice plan and get discounted calling rates from the U.S., Puerto Rico, and U.S Virgin Islands to over 225 other countries.3

Additional opt-in Mexico roaming features
The AT&T Mexico Roaming BonusSM package4 can be added to each cell phone on your Mobile Share, Mobile Share Value, or AT&T Unlimited Plan, and includes:
  • Unlimited talk within Mexico and from Mexico to U.S.
  • Unlimited text
  • 1GB of data for use when roaming in Mexico (overage is $20/GB)

The AT&T Mexico Roaming Data BonusSM package5 can be added to each data-only device (such as a tablet) on your Mobile Share, Mobile Share Value, or AT&T Unlimited Plan. This Bonus package includes 1GB of data for use when roaming in Mexico (overage is $20/1GB). This feature does not include voice or text.

Important information about the opt-in roaming features
Requirements for the AT&T Mexico Roaming Bonus & the AT&T Mexico Roaming Data Bonus:
  • Each device needs to opt-in to receive the feature.
  • The included 1GB data can’t be shared with other devices on the plan and does not rollover.
  • One-month commitment term required (package is billed monthly until cancelled by customer).

Looks like the page, https://www.att.com/shop/wireless/international/mexico-roaming-bonus.html, has a button which can be used to add the "Mexico Roaming Bonus" feature. I haven't scoured the fine-print well enough to comprehend if one can get this withOUT the $5/mo AT&T World Connect Value package for the case of having a Mobile Share Plan that is LESS than 15GB/month. I'm bewildered why in some of the fine print AT&T states, "One-month minimum term required." If it's a *free* add-on, then what's this one-month minimum stuff? I also love how this Mexico Roaming Bonus feature also advertises the ability of unlimited SMS texting to "more than 190 countries" (and MMS texting to "more than 120" countries) any of which AT&T "...may add, change, and remove included countries at its discretion without notice." [emphasis, mine].

Wait what? Yes, they do... I have the old unlimited plan. WiFi calling works fine.

Hotspot, you are correct.

Too bad, I can't get the DirectTV plan.

That's only good if you don't want to use your phone for anything else, like maps or travel guides. Not acceptable to most people.

When I travel overseas, I rent a Wi-Fi Hotspot at $10 day. I still get access to maps, etc. as well as being able to make free Wi-Fi calls.

I hadn't thought about that angle but I don't see why a cruise ship's Wi-Fi would be treated any differently than a terrestrial Wi-Fi hotspot. Can anyone confirm?

I guess they'll keep that cruise ship package around for older phones but presumably it wouldn't be necessary now for phones that support Wi-Fi calling.
