Makes you wonder if part of the problem is the iPhone.

Well, I have 2 GO phones (AT&T prepaid), and they drop in the same damn places that the iPhone does.

I had one of the GO phones before I had any iPhones (had a 3GS, now have an iP4) and it dropped like crazy.

Pretty sure this is AT&T not paying attention to the network.

I used to be a CR subscriber but I was very disappointed when CR tried to single Apple out for antenna attenuation problems as though not all smart phones suffer from the same problem.

CR just needs to be consistently accurate.

1. It's in the article (online).
2. It makes a big difference. More than half of AT&T's users are unique.
3. Wrong. AT&T carries more than all combined (based on public statements from AT&T and a lack of challenge by the other carriers).

I didn't see the link to the actual CR article so I googled it. Still doesn't explain why it's such a big deal that half were iPhone users. So iPhone users are unhappy with AT&T...

And in 2009, VZW & Sprint carried more data than AT&T:

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/gadgetrev...t-for-63-of-nations-mobile-data-traffic/13790

No data yet for 2010 but I don't see that changing anytime soon considering Android users consume more data on average than iPhone users.

yep, one of the reasons I didn't upgrad to the iPhone 4 is that ATT in Boston/Cambridge just sucks.

I'll see if Verizon gets the iPhone and then decide to upgrade or wait till June for the next Version (assuming it's Verizon by then).

But Apple clearly loses customers because my GF and I do not upgrade because of ATT and might even find a different phone on Verizon because ATT sucks so much.

There are a lot of statistical issues here. Is this AT&T Wireless, versus AT&T in toto? Same with comparing VZW to Verizon. Both companies have a heavy ISP arm, and carry far more traffic through their backbones than they do via their wireless divisions.

I'd like to know if they are comparing apples to apples. How many bits are flying over the airwaves on AT&T Wireless versus the amount over Verizon. That is where the rubber meets the road.

Why does MacRumors give any credence to Consumer Reports? While the facts in the survey could be correct, always consider the source. For over two decades, Consumer Reports has been on a mission to destroy Apple. In report after report, Consumer Reports has always either slammed or ignored Apple completely when ranking various computers and products.

Are you reading the same CRs the rest of us are reading? With only 1 exception (the iPhone 4), CR has consistently placed all of Apple's products at the very top of their recommended category year-in and year-out.

SWC, thanks for the links, that statement was unbelievable.

They're doing a terrible job then, aren't they?

Really, they should probably fire someone for writing this.

I guess they've been slipping recently.

The Problem with AT&T

The problem with AT&T is that they would rather spend roughly 6 - 8 Billion in advertisement trying to convince us they are awesome instead of spending 6 - 8 billion extra on fixing their network to prove to use they are awesome!

They would rather convince us they have a good network instead of just proving they do.

I don't think the CEO gets that a solid network would bring more customers then all of their catchy advertisements combined.

Word of mouth means more then a commercial on ever freaking TV station known to man and a crazy iAds campaign.

Wake up AT&T be the best; don't just say your the best!

ATT Problems

I've been with ATT since the 90's but others in my family have other providers. ATT has the worse signal strength of all providers. I live in a rural area and am in a dead pocket that is about one block square. I travel a lot. Signal strength is especially poor in Southern California were there are many dead areas. I have at least 20 close friends with iPhones and we all plan to leave ATT as soon as another carrier gets the iPhone and demonstrates consistant signal strength.

More than half of the AT&T respondents were iPhone users. I’m sure there are still some network capacity issues yet I bet more than a few of the respondents wanted to make a “statement” regarding exclusivity by clobbering AT&T in this survey. It would be interesting to see the survey results if you could take away the iPhone users.

My co-worker with an android on verizon has better everything and service than I do at home in NYC, during the commute, and at work in CT. Consistently. ATT is horrible.

I think he read the first post....

"Over half of the survey respondents who used AT&T as a carrier owned some version of the iPhone,"

In fact, I like how surveyed about 50% iPhone owners. This makes the survey more applicable to the people on this very website. The people on here certainly don't care how the latest Nokia performs on the AT&T website, do they?

this is a stupid article. att is not bad at all. way better than tmobile and verizon. ignorance these days.

Yeah they're far from perfect but they're a hell of a lot better than Sprint.

I have no complaints with AT&T. It works fine for me in the three areas i frequent most (Baltimore/DC, South Carolina, Miami/Ft. Lauderdale)

We actually do. Many an AT&T sucks threads have been made, only to be invaded by AT&T fanboys saying that it all depends on your local and that they have been with AT&T 20 years without a single dropped call.

I take umbridge with your statement...I've been with the company almost 10 years and it's not as bad as what I've read...also there are just as many sheep willing to defend Verizon's overpriced and less than stellar network, so there are "fan boys" on all sides...Consumer reports has NO credibility whatsoever...They stated that the iPhone is the best smartphone on the market but wouldn't reccomend it? BS...it's all politics...Consumer reports is just fuming because Apple dragged it's feet approving the $9.99 Consumer Report App that no one buys

Personally, I'm happy with AT&T.

I bet if you surveyed 100 people where I live compared to places like NYC where there are spotty issues with AT&T you'd get a different opinion?

It will be great when everyone leaves AT&T and goes to Verizon or others... more band-width for me! :)

My feelings exactly!

I loved US Cellular. I would still use them if they had the iPhone. ATT is ok. I don't really have any major complaint but coverage and call quality haven't been great. Verizon was ok when I used them 5 years ago. ATT major advantage is GSM.

what? AT&T certainly has more than iPhones on it's network....in fact the survey is even less reputable since it's biased towards iPhone users...there are millions of Blackberries that ride the death star and other dumb phones as well

This is the problem since each carrier in the US is pretty much a monopoly since everybody uses different radio tech/frequencies. T-Mo's coverage is piss poor around my area, and since Verizon/Sprint are CDMA, my "choice" is only AT&T. And yeah, coverage and reception seems on the declining side (too many people on iPhones I guess) with upload speed in my place still stuck at 56k speed.

Well...

As as three year AT&T subscriber I am shocked and stunned by the findings.

HOW IN THE HECK DID AT&T NOT GET ALL 'SOLID BLACK CIRCLE' RATINGS? I THING THE SURVEY IS RIGGED!!!!
