I suspect iPhone users have higher standards. Personally I don't have any problems with iPhone at suburb or in cities. In really busy hotspots it could get slow but that's due to the amount of data people are using.

US Celluar? Sounds like the place to go for smartphones.

AT&T is seriously horrible...im not jumping ship and hating on them because everyone else is. I have my own horror stories with them...Not just on my iPhone bill, but with my internet issues as well...overall as a company, customer service is nothing they care about. I have filed my formal complaint with them yesterday. Cant wait for them to lose the iPhone.

Why does MacRumors give any credence to Consumer Reports? While the facts in the survey could be correct, always consider the source. For over two decades, Consumer Reports has been on a mission to destroy Apple. In report after report, Consumer Reports has always either slammed or ignored Apple completely when ranking various computers and products.

In the "Antennagate" (God, I hate that term), Consumer Reports tried to paint Apple as the only company whose products had a possible attenuation problem. They flat out lied about many aspects, and when proven wrong and caught in their lies, Consumer Reports never retracted their assertions, knowing full-well that the damage had already been done.

It would not surprise me if these purveyors of a beige, dull, unfriendly world that is Consumer Reports is on the take from Apple competitors. I sense that they hate Apple for all that it stands for, hate beautiful design, hate creativity and fun. The East Coast bureaucrats that run Consumer Reports envision a world where we all drive Chrysler K-Cars painted beige, where we live in a beige house that looks exactly the same as our neighbors, eat the same dull, generic foods and we all use beige PCs running DOS.

If you get the impression that I have long loathed Consumer Reports, you guessed right. So please, MacRumors, don't give these cork-soaking bastiches any links or clicks. You only empower them.

Really???

I guest that's why CR rated Apple laptops highest in the 13", 15" & 17" catagories.

I for one (or many) will be bidding AT&T fair-well once another carrier (any carrier) offers the iPhone.

I've had all the carriers (Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T) in Orange County, CA and AT&T's service is embarrassing. I drop on average 1 out 4 calls, even calls made in front of my MicroCell are dropped. It is ridiculous and frankly unacceptable in this day and age. For those, saying it is my phone - I've had the same issues on both my iPhone 3gS, Iphone 4 and my wife has reception issues as well.

"They can put a man on the moon..." <insert Brian Regan's voice here>

I disagree that AT&T is the worst. I live in Dallas, Tx and have had all four major carriers. Sprint is by far the worst, Tmobile is not much better.

AT&T is great here, verizon is just as good

I think people tend to complain and dismiss the opinions of CR only when they rank a beloved brand or product low. CR has for years ranked Apple computers at the top of their charts, so I hardly think their rating of the iPhone or ATT constitutes an anti-Apple or anti-big company bias. In addition, people will often assume their own personal, anecdotal experiences with a product or service are typical of that product/service. Just because you've been with ATT for 10 years and never had a dropped call doesn't mean everyone else has had the same experience- or that ATT is superior to other wireless providers.

C.R gives the iPhone a bad review so you infer that C.R 'has it in for Apple'...?

You really don't like Apple negativity do you.

Nice! Maybe this is what they need to make them spend their iPhone money on their network instead of their stores.

What a Moron...

Well what can I say, that's how information is disseminated, just to prove a point. But all I can say is the "moron" who wrote this is at the same time an "idiot". What a way to express once opinion on another.

Personally, I'm happy with AT&T.

I bet if you surveyed 100 people where I live compared to places like NYC where there are spotty issues with AT&T you'd get a different opinion?

It will be great when everyone leaves AT&T and goes to Verizon or others... more band-width for me! :)

My feelings also. Then we will know if AT&T is telling the truth.

It's all about location

It's really about where you are. When I was living in Boston, I had T-mobile with very few drop calls, if ever. Switched to iphone AT&T and it wasn't great, but bearable. Moved to LA last year and it's total crap shoot now. There are dead spots all over the place, don't even think about trying to drive and talk, you are sure to lose calls, voice mails without a call all the time, and don't even think about being in the Hollywood Hills to try and make a call. No service. The rich bastards refuse to have any cell tower within 20 mile range of their multi-million dollar homes.

yeah ATT sucks, my GPS in my iPhone 4 is pointless in downtown San Francisco, and while we were driving to LA, my friend's droid had perfect service all throughout while mine would cut in and out. Also in store help is useless. They all just tell you "you have to call we can't do that here."

How is your lack of a GPS signal AT&T's fault? You need line of sight to 3 or more satellites for GPS to work. Seems like the culprit here is "downtown San Fran".

Makes you wonder if part of the problem is the iPhone. Already a know fact that apple went against AT&T request in first hen iPhone on the chooser they used for the attenna. The chip used did not work well with the tower AT&T uses and with so many poor ratings it could be just the iPhone. I want to know the results with iPhone users stripped out.
I carry several phones in my laptop bag daily, they are iPhone, BlackBerry and Android phones all on AT&T, as well as Android phones on Verizon.

Whenever I get dropped calls on the iPhone, simply switching to my BlackBerry or Android phone is all it takes, suddenly a getting a good connection and clear call is no problem. BB's & Android phones work just fine on AT&T.

And I'm not advocating for AT&T, as long as it works I'm happy.

The carriers are all very similar and coverage varies depending on where you live. I just happen to live in a major metropolitan area where Verizon and AT&T both have great coverage. Thus I have good things to say about both carriers.

It's the iPhone, not AT&T. However that said, Apple is so influential and good at conning people into believing whatever Apple wants them to believe that AT&T has taken the rap. This post is sure to be attacked by the heard of AT&T haters, that's fine, I've been happy with the service and that's all that matters to me.

I tend to agree that the survey is likely flawed. I personally don't care how AT&T is rated; the fact is for now that the iPhone itself is more important to me than the network.

That aside, who is really qualified to rank judge which network is good or bad? Has anyone done a fair and objective test of several networks to have a good sense of what a reasonable expectation is of good service? Sure, we all expect phones to work all the time flawlessly, but none of them do. All of the carriers have dead spots- is anyone really qualified to judge which network has more dead spots and does it really matter? Does it matter for YOU if someone else doesn't get service if you get service where you are most frequently?

So, I think that no one is really qualified to make a judgement on the quality of a network, and even overall quality isn't really as important as compared to whether the service is where you need it.

Since you probably have Kool-aid colored glasses you probably haven't heard of the Samsung Mesmerize. It's a very nice phone.

Yeah, well uh...can I just say "no ***** Sherlock"

As of late I have to agree with CR.
The trip from western MA into Boston, Data is sporadic. Even on the trains that have att wifi. In Boston it's a crap shoot. Fenway park and the Garden has zero reception at Fenway to mediocre service at the Garden.

Right now the data tower where I work has no 3G service but att has stated it's fine, We are using E for data services.

Verizon may have it's issues but it's painfully obvious that anyone utilizing their services on the train or at major venues is surely not an att subscriber

Your Mileage May Vary

I realize that one anecdote isn't enough to refute a survey, but count me as one person who has had mixed experience with Verizon.

I recently switched from AT&T with a 1st gen iPhone, to Verizon with an LG feature phone (for family plan reasons).

Pros:
1.Other people say they can hear me much more clearly on the phone (the 1st gen iPhone was known for poor mic and earpiece sound quality so this could be totally due to the hardware change)

Cons:
1. Signal strength at my house is much worse for Verizon than it was for AT&T. I constantly get breaking-up audio during a call from the other person on calls unless I stand in exactly the right spot in the house. AT&T was 4-5 bars upstairs, 3-4 bars in the basement. Verizon is 1-2 bars upstairs, 0-1 bars in the basement. AT&T installed a new tower 4 blocks from my house, about 6 months ago. My neighbors have complained about Verizon reception in our area for at least 2 years. Where is Verizon, who prides themselves on superior network coverage?

2. I now get significantly more spam text messages on Verizon than I did on AT&T. Sometimes in the middle of the night, meaning a potential rude awakening if I don't turn the phone on silent.

"AT&T Fares Poorly in 'Consumer Reports' Ratings"

In other news, the sky is reported to be . . . blue. Also, late breaking news from Alaska: it's cold there.

I'm guessing (hoping??) that when Verizon gets the iphone, their scores will even out a bit. Verizon's will go down (heavy increased traffic) and AT&T's might got up a bit because of a lightened load.

I'd say that is a good bet. Put me down for $199.00 on #16. ;)
