From what I have skimmed through the pages it seems that this works with the BS $36 fee on your next bill cycle after upgrading. However has anyone gotten it for the $250 early upgrade fee?

you will only get it for the full fee if your account is a danger of being lost

by the end of this month i plan to upgrade all 4 lines on my family account so that they all have a contract end date of being within a month of each other

Just got the $36 upgrade fee taken off for both my phone and wife's. Excellent!!

I had to call and ask for it because the Chat for billing seems to never be available for me.

Got $72 in credit for 2 iPhone upgrades though. :D

Isn't in the contract/paperwork you sign that says you will pay this fee? I called and they waived mine but wouldn't have been upset if they wouldn't have. I just paid to activate a phone a few months earlier and one six months ago. I simply asked since I have paid those two and am never late on a bill plus been with them since they were Cingular if they'd waive it and they did. Now I may start a thread about AT&T service request questioner/summary. Because I laid into them about their cell service. I'll post you guys and gals would like me too.

No go here... They are probably ready for us, right after I pasted my line she pasted this:

Our fees are standard. I can explain our upgrade fee. As the cost of the equipment now offered has increased with the exploding popularity of technology and demand for technology, the $36 fee is to allow us to offer large equipment discounts, providing assistance with the upgrade process if needed, cover some of our administrative costs and supporting the returns process within 30 days. These specialized processes help us to ensure you are satisfied with your new equipment, and are ready to use it the day you receive it. The upgrade fee allows us to defray some of these additional service costs.

EDIT:

After a little more complaining of my part she said:

I do see you've not been credited for this previously, I will waive the fee as a one time courtesy, going forward all fees are standard and not credited unless there is a promotional offer, one moment please.

I just got 2 of mine waived. I just copy and pasted what gatorinLA said lol

Enrique: Hi Mr. Hot, thank you for chatting with AT&T. I can help you with your bill questions. May I know why do you want the upgrade fee to be waived?
Denis Hot: We've been loyal customers for many years and always make our payments on time.
Enrique: I understand that you are our customer since 2009, but regarding the upgrade fee, it is a valid charge and used for you to have the equipment discounted.
Denis Hot: I was unaware that I would be charged an upgrade fee when I purchased my new phone.
Denis Hot: I did not order through AT&T. I purchased my iphone through apple. I don't recall being charged an upgrade fee the last time I bought a new iPhone.
Denis Hot: I feel as if I'm being penalized for signing a 2 year contract.
Enrique: I understand your situation, but that is how the upgrade works. You need to pay for the $36 fee so that you can get your new device discounted.
Denis Hot: I've been a loyal customer for years now, and was even tempted to switch to another carrier with better data rates but chose to stick with your company anyways. Had I known that I'd be charged what amounts to half my normal bill, just to extend my service, and agree to commit to AT&T for another 2 years, I'd have gone with Sprint or Verizon. I'm disappointed that I cannot have this fee waived.
Enrique: I understand that you are not aware of the fee, since you are with us since 2009 and you pay your bill on time, as a one-time courtesy, I will make an adjustment with the $36 upgrade fee. But please be advised that the next time you will upgrade your equipment, you will have the upgrade fee.
Denis Hot: We have 2 lines that upgraded, 917******* upgraded also as well, we weren't aware on that line either.
Denis Hot: I will make note of it the next time we upgrade.
Enrique: Okay, please wait and I will check your account.
Enrique: Please wait and I am processing your request.
Denis Hot: Thank you very much
Enrique: You are welcome.
Enrique: Good news! I have successfully adjusted the amount $72 on your account and you will see the credit on your next bill.

Denis Hot: Awesome, I truly appreciate all of your help Enrique.
Enrique: You are very welcome! Please be aware of the upgrade fee next time you upgrade.
Denis Hot: Duly noted. Have a great day!

I called At&t on Saturday for a billing matter. My bill online showed almost $600. It is normally around $175-$180. While sorting out the extra charges I asked about the upgrade fees and the representative offered to waive both of the $36 fees as a courtesy for all of the problems I had been dealing with on my account.

Just got the $36 fee waived too! Yay! They said it was a "one time courtesy" and that I would have to pay it next time, something along those lines. Then they asked me to fill out a customer satisfaction survey after ending the chat. I did and gave the rep good ratings because he was quick and courteous!

As of 8:30pm EST 9/23/12 people have saved $1,398 from the information in this thread. Want to help as many people as possible.

You can do it through their live chat. I just contacted them and they refunded both $36 upgrade fees. Technically they credited my account for that amount.

Its quick and easy and can save you some money.

All I said was:

"Good morning. I recently signed a 2 year contract extension and upgraded to a new iPhone. I was hoping I could have my upgrade fee waived or credited to my account."

(When I wrote it to them it was plural as I was doing two fees and two contract extensions)

It worked. i just copied and pasted your same exact words.

thanks a lot :D.

waived....

They asked why I believed it should be waived and gave them the "i want to feel like a valued customer that stayed loyal to ATT when having a choice to switch"

Tried numerous times to no avail. I think it has to deal with something with a FAN discount, I don't know.

It seems to always result in the following response:
I can explain this upgrade fee to you. The $36 fee is to allow us to assist customers with recommending new equipment, offering special offers and discounts, providing assistance with the upgrade process if needed, and supporting the returns process within 30 days. These specialized processes help us to ensure you are satisfied with your new equipment, and are ready to use it the day you receive it. The upgrade fee allows us to defray some of these additional service costs.

Well it looks like I will be waived. I kept fighting and talked about the "valued customer” and even threatened to leave AT&T. I was on hold for an additional 5 minutes till she came back and mentioned about that I was waived already on the 14th when I pre-ordered. I told her I know I was charged the $36 on my recent bill. She stated that it will be reflected on the October bill. Should I call BS or is this legit? I saved the chat transcript just in case.

Thanks just got this done. rep tried to tell me what they used the fee towards and I replied back, "I've been a long time customer and if you can do this as a courtesy" and she gave me the credit.

It worked. Got my fees waived. Took me two tries though. The first CSR gave me some copy and paste explanation as to why the fees exist. X'd him out with the quickness and loaded another rep. The second rep, a woman, did not mess around. Got my fees waived no questions asked.

Worked for me!

Posted this question in the pre-chat dialog where they confirm name/email etc.

Alvin: You're welcome. Please bear with me for a moment.
Alvin: Can I have your last name please.
Me: <LastName>
Alvin: Thanks. One moment please and I'll waive the upgrade fee for you as a one time courtesy.
Me: Thank you very much
Alvin: You're welcome.
Alvin: It has been waived now and you'll see that amount as credited on your next bill.

Curious...has this worked for people for more than one "one time courtesies"??

Samatha Oakes : Thank you for contacting AT&T, I can answer any inquiries you have. It is my priority to answer any questions you have about fees.

Me: Good afternoon. I recently signed a 2 year contract extension and upgraded to a new iPhone. I was hoping I could have my upgrade fee waived or credited to my account.

Samatha Oakes : I can explain this fee to you. The upgrade fee is to allow us to assist customers with recommending new equipment, offering special offers and discounts, providing assistance with the upgrade process if needed, and supporting the returns process within 30 days. These specialized processes help us to ensure you are satisfied with your new equipment, and are ready to use it the day you receive it. The upgrade fee allows us to defray some of these additional service costs.

Me: I understand that position, but I have upgraded almost every year between my phone and my wife's and been a customer since the company was Cingular. I was hoping this would be taken into consideration.

Samatha Oakes : I do see you have been a customer since 11/17/2006.

Samatha Oakes : One moment.

Samatha Oakes : I need to gather information to better assist you.

Me: ok thank you

Samatha Oakes : $42.26 was applied as a credit to your account.

Samatha Oakes : You will see this on your next bill as your upgrade fee being waived.

Me: thank you very much for your help

Coincidentally, I had called AT&T the other day about this crap.

After I asked for the fee to be waived, I had to hang on the phone while the rep tried his spiel to upgrade my plan, order u-verse and connect their cable.

Also, at first, he offered 1/2 the fee to waived but eventually he said he would be chatting with his manager while we discussed their service offerings. Eventually, he said the full fee waiver was manager-approved...

I tried this and was flat out told NO! Maybe this is because I am still an unlimited data user? I don't know but they just made my decision to switch to Verizon much easier when the time comes.

Called and asked them if they could credit the $250 upgrade fee to my bill instead of waiving it because I'm a long time member with 3 lines on my account and our bill is around $200 a month. They credited me with $260.xx. Called every apple store/at&t store around pittsburgh and finally found a 64gb black iPhone 5 drove out and bought it about an hour ago. Also I asked the rep on the phone if he would also waive the activation fee and he said he couldn't do it until I bought the phone and to call back and ask him and he would.
