I was renewing my unlimited and just got hit with a $45 upgrade fee that will be applied to my ATT bill. Anyone being charged $45? Ive been an ATT customer since 1999. Very annoying having to pay this to renew contract. Will they budge?

When re-comitting yourself to a new 2-year service agreement, the $45 always pops up. That is how its always been. Remember it used to be $30. Some people get it waived, but 80% of the time it sticks.

**Edit: WTF, it's $45 now?? Highway robbery!***

This happened to me last year with the 6 Plus, $40 activation, I found it absolute BS - since I bought the phone on my end on my Mac, I got the phone in the mail, I am the one that activated it from here - and called and called and finally has it waived. Or even a credit towards your next bill can be acceptable.

Just be polite, call..may take a few times.
Ask for a supervisor, or even the supervisors supervisor - if the regular rep refuses.

Got mine credited two days ago for renewing 2 year contract. Been with att 6 years lol never paid a activation fee yet.

It's been 40 or 45$ for a couple cycles now

Is it just me or is a 15-dollar fee for buying your phone outright and having "no committment" some BS?

I shall be phoning AT&T onces our new iPhones arrive.

Right?

I spoke with a CS on chat he said -

"Ian-V: Now since this is a no commitment upgrade. I can guarantee you that you will not charge for any upgrade fee.
Ian-V: the info you just read is just a general information when you upgrade your phone."

I explained my receipt includes the $15 charge and he said it won't actually show up on my bill... we shall see.

That's good to know. I was quite irritated by that fee.

Just tried today to get the upgrade fee waived.. no luck this time.. Guess I will need to call retention department and get it done there and see if I can get an early upgrade on the other line while I'm at it...

I got my bill and also got charged $45 upgrade fee, total of $90 for 2 phones.

I took other people's advice from previous posts 1) I used chat instead of calling and 2) I was very nice.

The rep was courteous and promised to help me. She said she understood that the charges are a pain but they are part of renewing my contract. However, they saw that my account is in good standing and I've been a loyal customer so she offered a one time $25 credit per phone, total of $50. I told her that while it wasn't what I was hoping for, I appreciated her help and thanked her for the credit. After hearing how tough they're being on crediting the entire amount, I figured it was better than nothing.

After that, she was typing for a while and her next note was totally unexpected. She said she's talking to a manager and trying to get approval to have the $90 credited. A few minutes later, she did her magic and my bill was credited the upgrade fees. I checked my balance online and sure enough, the $90 was credited! I'm very happy!

I think it just all depends on the rep. Try it out and hope it works out well for you too!

I just had a live chat with them. I paid $250 each on two lines for an early upgrade and then the two $36 fees. I told them that I had heard of people having fees waived, so I thought I would look I into it. I had $241.86 credited to my account with no questions asked...WAY more than I was expecting. I was just nice about it an honest about what I wanted.

SORRY. The $250/$500 fee was for equipment you still owed money on when you did not fulfill your contract. SOMEBODY has to pay for those phones.

As to the activation fee... different story.

The upgrade fee is part of renewing your contract?

so let me get this straight:

you have to pay them money in order to sign up to be legally and contractually obligated to pay them money?

...well...you know...there's all those buttons to press...and those line to...connect...when someone upgrades his phone, so those things cost money. Yeah, that's it....

LOL. exactly. last year a rep tried to defend the activation fee to me by saying there are database thing on the backend that need to be changed that are difficult....

having come from a web/database development background, I can say with near certainty that the statement the rep made was a crock of ****. it's a couple database queries.

Any word if you get charged the fee or not for the iPhone Upgrade Program via Apple? I would certainly hope not, but I wouldn't put it past AT&T to either charge it or invent some new fee to charge.

I looked at my account and I typically pay $239/month for 4 lines, my up coming bill shows my balance at $322. It didn't make any sense to me, so I called CS. The rep said that I was charged the $45 plus tax for upgrading one line, but that still wasn't an almost $90 difference. Anyway, I got her to credit me the $45 and she said, this is the last upgrade that'll be available with AT&T for a subsidized phone since that program will be discontinued next year. Now I have to call back and speak to another rep and find out what other fees I'm paying in my next bill. This might be my last year with AT&T!

I just got both my fees credited via chat. I was nice, but had to request a manager and they said they would credit both lines. Chat rep said it was a 1x courtesy.

1. $45 upgrade fee for subsidized upgrades ($199/299/399 etc).

2 $15 fee for ATT NEXT upgrades

3. $15 fee for BRAND NEW LINES being activated (doesn't matter if it's BYOD or ATT next). People. In the past ATT used to charge $36 for new line activation even for BYOD. So $15 fee for new line activation isn't a bad fee.

4. If you have a pre existing line there is never a fee when u bring ur own device or full price purchase.

I brought full price via Apple dot com and one via att dot com (subsidized upgrade). Got my bill today. $45 upgrade charge for one line. $0 for my no commitment full price purchase on my other line.

The upgrade fee really reduces what they spend on the subsidy. So $450 is the normal subsidy, and they take away $45 for the upgrade fee these days. You can't really look at it as a fee, it's how much they are reducing the subsidy by a "trick."

Instead, they should sell you the phone for $45-$50 more, and people couldn't get out of the fee then.

Don't get me wrong, it's a joke, and it's a joke that the fee goes up constantly too. A few years ago I was able to get it waived too, but now I realize it's just an adjustment on the subsidy.

Just came from AT&T chat. It was really quick to get those fees credited. Spent some time chatting and entertaining the chat person afterwards. All in all, ask politely and be a good conversation and all should be well.

What are you guys saying to get this back? I see no point in paying an activation fee when I took my phone out of the box and it worked lol.

I simply just asked. My exact words were "I just recently added two new iPhones and was told I would be charged activation fees on my paid in full phones. I've never asked this before, but I was wondering if I can get credited for those fees." The CSR on the chat just said of course she can, and added the credit immediately. In fact, my account already posted the $30 credit. Pretty darn nice.

If you buy a phone from Apple, pay full price and aren't on a contract with AT&T do they still hit you with the fee?
I haven't checked my AT&T bill yet to see if they did.
