Maybe I'm missing something, but what would be the advantages of doing this to your iPhone? Sorry if it sounds like a dumb question; maybe I need some sleep hehe.
3G and 3GS iPhones don't need to be unlocked to use a GoPhone sim in them. Just insert the sim and you are ready to go.
Hello. I just purchased a iPhone 3G on eBay and I am looking to use it with GoPhone service. If I'm starting from scratch with GoPhone (no service, no sim) should I:
a) Buy a GoPhone @ attwireless.com, but don't activate the SIM in the GoPhone?
b) Buy a GoPhone Sim on eBay? Would I need to purchase a GoPhone as well?
c) Buy a GoPhone at a brick and mortar store (e.g. Walmart)?
I'm looking for the easiest and fastest way to do this. If I can avoid lying to customer service by saying I damaged my sim, I'd like to. Thanks,
Jason M.

Also, if you purchase a GoPhone and activate the SIM card that comes with it, under new AT&T policy, that SIM card will be locked to that device for six months.
I believe this is true, but only if you insert the SIM card in to the Go Phone. I activated my GoPhone account and the sim card via http://att.com/gophone and I didn't run in to this problem. I just purchased a GoPhone @ Walmart and (after activation via the web) successfully made a call on the iPhone and pulled up google.com via the 3G network. I'm back to using WLAN, of course
Now here's a question. Do I need to keep the phone or just the IMEI number?
In order to use the data features of your iPhone, you'll need to pick one of the two GoPhone data options. Either $20 for 100Mb/month or $5 for 1Mb/month. To get data working with the GoPhone, you'll need to get your iPhone connected via WiFi and then browse to http://www.unlockit.co.nz/#_Custom in Safari. Once there, run the app and choose AT&T as your Data provider. I can verify that still works.Without a specific data plan, can you use data service with a different APN?
Thanks for all the valuable info you've provided on this topic, SpaceKitty! All you ever need to reactivate in the future is the IMEI #. You don't even need a phone to activate a new GoPhone account as long as you have the IMEI. Once the account is setup, all you do is place the sim in the iPhone and it works.
What does hactivating and unlocking have anything to do with not accepting an AT&T go-phone sim?
Do you have any idea or you're just trying to pass out your false guesses as advice?

But I imagine that 100Mb won't go very far at least if you're doing anything media intensive.
I think it's activating the SIM card in a phone, but I'm not positive. I believe that the phone writes something to the SIM which locks it to that phone, but I'm not 100% sure. I definitely didn't receive the $25 airtime bonus that was mentioned on the phone's packaging.so let me get this straight, as long as i didn't get any bonus airtime from the gophone upon activation it will work on any locked 3g or 3gs phone?

As for how far 100Mbytes will go, that's hard to say. But you can check your usage rate on-line every day or every week, so you'll know how fast you're using data.
My sim wasn't locked to the GoPhone. It's in my (locked) iPhone right now working fine. That's why I think that activating the SIM in a phone with bonus minutesaccording to spacekitty's post, if you get a gophone package with some bonus airtime then and ONLY then the sim is locked to that phone for six months. it seems like you only get bonus airtime from those cheap, throwaway phones that you buy for like $20. since it was advertised on your package that bonus airtime came with the phone i'm going to assume (again, based on spacekitty's post) that the sim was indeed locked to the phone.
Apparently, even if the SIM is locked, you can just say it broke and get a new one and that SIM won't be locked.the thing with me, is that i didn't buy a throwaway phone. i bought an LG vu for $230
Just out of curiosity is there a reason that someone shouldn't post their phone's IMEI here? I guess AT&T would catch on eventually? All you ever need to reatctivate in the future is the IMEI #. My current AT&T contract has ended, and conveniently, my phone broke a few days ago. There's a guy in my area selling a 3G in excellent condition for a very reasonable price, and I want to grab it if possible.
I've already read everything about using a go-phone SIM card with the iPhone to bypass the data plan (which I want to do as I am constantly around wifi areas.)
My question is: can I add an iPhone with a go-phone SIM to an existing family plan we have?
