My math:
More iphones==>more MMS==>more SMS==>more tethering==>more monthly charges.$$$

Do you try to make your money now by charging more for the phone and attracting fewer buyers / subscribers or charge a lower price and rake in monthly fees over time?

I don't know what makes more fiscal sense, but the American way is to pLay now and pay later.

Your thought process is in error. New customers and those that are upgrade eligible get the same price you paid for the 3G last year. Why would they charge less on the 3GS so you can upgrade from your 3G to pay the same monthly fee you will already be paying for the next 12-18 months.

How do they make more money by letting you get a 3GS? Really, come up with a better argument, your idea has more holes in it than a stripper's stockings.

The record here is more people are complaining b/c they dont have the money to upgrade so bashing the phone and its not a very big upgrade is the way there making there selves feel better about not being able to get it. The prices stay the exact same way as the did last andd not very many people complained, that is b/c they dropped the price $200 from the original iPhone. You cant expect a price drop every year and demand better specs it just doesn't happen.

This must be the best answer this week bravo and what i think is on everyones mind who has been trying to get this point over

Does really address anything pertinent.

If that is the point you wanted to get across that AT&T might lose exclusivity before the next model was launched you all fail.

Something tells me that is not the argument most people were going for, and that was pretty much the only one made in that article.

73 hours now not going to count minutes that's close enough. Also jhCanuck I am a Atheist good movie though but the book was better! ;) and who ever said they never signed a two year contract, it was over the phone when you accepted that 3G phone you agreed too there terms it happens with every carrier unless you have a Pay as you go phone! bottom line guys company's release new products all the time it is not there obligation too replace the product with the latest and greatest nor is the company's they work with. say you bought a Power Book from Best Buy two months ago now try walking in there and demanding a new one, or a HP, Dell. new TV model etc not going to happen. It's called life not I always get the coolest new toy when I want.

AT&T should have made this clear to everyone buying a subsidized iPhone last year to avoid this. But hindsight is 20/20.

People need to look up the words "subsidized" and "contract" next time before they sign on the dotted line.

at&t couldnt have made it any clearer. You are signing a "two year" contract. Not a "two year contract OR when the next phone comes up and you want to ugprade" contract.

It's funny how people are treating this as some sort of injustice: Get over it. You don't NEED to upgrade to the latest and greatest. If you do, then you should expect to pay extra.

Or maybe what at&t needs to do is offer a second contract option for those impatient folks who think they NEED to upgrade their phones every year.

This way everyone that wants toupgrade every year can and the "normal people" that want a cheaper iphone can wait their two years and not sit around complaining on twitter or facebook with the lame e-petitions.

So after all of this, has any existing customer received 199/299 pricing?

Yes. Dumped my SIM in my 2g iphone, reactivated it, now both apple.com and att.com say I am eligible for the $199 price. Before I went back to the 2g phone, it said $399. I think this is a loophole meaning they somehow missed I was on a newer phone, and now only think I was always on an unsubsidized 2g phone.

No you don't get it! at least he/she didn't start preaching the reasons why which again gets me back to my orginal point! who cares for the whys people still have the right to be unhappy!

don't be surprised

if they catch it latter and send you a bill! and you found a glitch. You didn't really get anything because of giving them 48 hours. & others are talking about getting out of there contract because of dumb reasons just so they can get the new phone. So none of should be surprised if AT&T tries to raise the rates or subsidize these cost down the line. At the end of the day it's business, or profit and loss.

Iphone 3gs

why does everyone get so upset about having to pay for a new phone at full retail?? I mean it happens at every company you go to.. If you sign a contract you get a discount on a phone.. NO matter what new phone comes out if you choose you want it you have to pay full retail unless you have met the terms of your contract.. I just don't get why this is still being questioned??? if you want the new phone badly enough pay the full retail..

Missing a fact!

Most of the people who point out there was no cost for upgrading from the original 2.5G iPhone to the 3G forget those of us who bought the origianl paid FULL PRICE. There was NO subsidy on the first iPhone. I paid $599 on day one for my 8 Gb iPhone and proceeded to enjoy it. I didn't pitch a fit when Apple lowered the price eight weeks after I bought mine, just like I didn't pitch a fit when Apple cut $200 off the price of the 12" PB about a week after I bought mine. Early adopters pay more. A well know fact. I may get the 3GS on Friday, but I want to see how the OS upgrade works on my current iPhone first. I just wish all the whinners who think they are DUE some sort of special treatment so they can have the latest and greatest shouuld do like the rest of us early adopters do; pay up to be first.

Because you can't PAY FULL RETAIL PRICE for a 3GS without RENEWING YOUR CONTRACT! It is understandable that one would have to renew to accept a subsidy, but not acceptable if paying FULL RETAIL PRICE.

What kind of idiot would PAY FULL RETAIL PRICE and RENEW their CONTRACT?

^^

Nice gesture, but its only for those who were eligible in July, August, and Sept. I.e. they've already paid most of the subsidy.

I wonder what percentage of people this really effects? It seems your subsidy term is pro-rated based on your monthly contribution (which makes sense).

Edit: this thread seems to confirm that even people with pretty high bills are being left out:
