Mine says:

"This line is eligible for equipment discount pricing when you sign up for a 2-year service agreement. You can also take advantage of our no-commitment pricing option. All iPhone purchases require a 2-year service commitment."

So do I have to pay the higher price for the iPhone??

The first sentence says it all. As long as you sign a new contract (Which the iPhone requires) you can get the discount price. So yes, you will pay either 199/299 depending on the storage you want. Lucky you :)

I thought about that when I read it but I just figured ATT was going to take the route that would net them the most money per phone. I personally wont pay more for the phone AND sign a new 2 year contract. If thats the case, I wont be buying an iphone on launch day.

If they do sell at the 199-299 price and just require me to sign a new contract with the data plan, I'm good with that. I guess time will tell.

I am in the same frame of mind; I won't pay extra for it and sign a 2 year contract. I will just wait until I can upgrade next year. Tough for AT&T, but I'm not going to play their game.

I posted this some where else. I meant to ask here, but I forgot where this thread was at.

So, all iPhone owners get the lower price guaranteed, no matter where there upgrade status was at from their last non-iphone discount? I guess this is based on having an active iPhone account on your plan, doesn't matter if you just sold your iPhone?

If so, what if you borrowed a friends 1gen iPhone and used your own sim card to activate it on Tunes, then hand it back to your friend. I'm not sure what happens when the friend puts his own sim back in. But technically I'd then have an active iPhone account. If I came into ATT on launch with my sim card, would I automatically be eligible for the lower price 3G iPhone?

New Message???

So what the hell does this mean?

That you are out of luck until April of 2009 if you want to pay the 199/299 price point.

Not necessarily. They can't call it a no-commitment price if a 2 year contract is required, no matter what the price ends up being. Very cryptic. I really need to know if I can get this phone or not, so it would be nice if AT&T could get the details out.

You would have your friend's phone as a "hand-me-down", then when you give it back to him, questionable if it would still work.

AT&T can tell via the phone's IMEI that it's going back and forth between two accounts...

Very cryptic indeed, so I called. I just got off the phone with an AT&T "iPhone Pro" representative and she said that since my wife is not a current iPhone user but ATT subscriber, all we need to do is extend her contract another 2 years and pay a $36 activation fee. Let's hope so. White for wife and black for me.

I hope that's the truth! Why $36, though? Isn't the upgrade fee normally $18 for current customers?

Well, I went to their website to check it out and saw the same thing on my account. It made me feel a little better about the chance that I would get the 199/299 price. That was until I saw this:

" *Qualified customers only. 2 year contract required. Based on 3G and EDGE testing. Actual speeds vary by site conditions. Based on iPhone 3G (8GB) and first-generation iPhone (8GB) purchases. Requires new 2-year AT&T rate plan, sold separately.
**AT&T respects your privacy and you can unsubscribe at any time. If you have any questions about how AT&T collects, uses and protects your personal information, please visit our Privacy Policy. "

While I was on their site about 10 minutes ago, I went back to the ATT Wireless iPhone page (where you sign up for the updates). I looked at the disclaimer and noticed that it changed to include the highlighted "Based on iPhone 3G (8GB) AND first-generation iPhone (8GB purchases"

This little addition to their disclaimer tells me that because I am still under a non-iPhone contract and not eligible to upgrade, that i will in fact be paying more AND signing a 2 year agreement.

Does anyone else have any new news that would contradict this?? Please let there be SOMETHING!!

That language has been on the AT&T and Apple sites for days now, and nobody has brought it up until now, but I too was curious about it. It doesn't mention anything about new customers, though, whom we assume will be eligible for the low pricing, so that's curious. I have no idea what any of it means.

I'm not sure what you mean -- the * is from where it says "half the price" -- they're explaining the "half" is based on current vs. old price. I think it's guaranteed from ALL the different quotes in the media and wording on the web page that ANYONE who activates the 3G WILL have to sign a 2-year contract. -What we don't know is the price for the current AT&T customers who aren't eligible for an upgrade.

Purchase price of old 8GB iPhone: $399. Purchase price of new 8GB iPhone: $199. That sentence, or the ones after and before, has nothing to do with upgrade pricing or upgrade eligibility--that's the "qualified customers" part.
It doesn't mention anything about new customers, though, whom we assume will be eligible for the low pricing, so that's curious.
New customers are ipso facto qualified customers.

Yes. AT&T has already said that there is no prepaid option in the US for the iPhone 3G, so that is exactly right.

Actually the astrisk is next to the "half the price" and the 199 price. It didn't say that part about the first gen iphone a few days ago and seems to be talking about the 199 being available for current first gen customers as well as the half the price comparison. I'm simply bringing it up because there are still people that think the 199/299 price is for everyone (meaning no need to cancel for current members not eligible for an upgrade if they want the 199 price). It also helps clarify the fact that ATT will most likely be charging the higher price AND require a new contract (which goes against their policy up until this point with non-upgrade eligible customers who purchase unsubsidized phones). Its starting to come out in their policies, not just speculation on the net and word of mouth from people with the company.

I'm just keeping myself occupied until something official is released as I am a current ATT customer not yet eligible for an upgrade. I just want to know how much to bring with me to the :apple: store. Which of course probably won't be released until a day before D-Day.

It says no such thing.

The reason you know this is because it's totally separated from the eligibility and plan requirements, which come first, followed by the explanation of the "twice the speed" part, followed by an explanation of the "half the price" part. It then ends with yet another reminder that AT&T contract service is required.
I'm simply bringing it up because there are still people that think the 199/299 price is for everyone
It is, subject to the same qualifications as getting service in the first place. If you sign a new, two-year agreement, it's yours for $199. Offering customers the convenience of seamlessly transferring their existing service doesn't change that--it's just an alternative.

What? Look at Apple's site, which has been the same and has a better design. http://www.apple.com/iphone/
Twice as fast.
Half the Price*

*Based on 3G and EDGE testing. Actual speeds vary by site conditions. Based on iPhone 3G (8GB) and first-generation iPhone (8GB) purchases. Requires new 2-year AT&T rate plan, sold separately.

They are explaining what "twice as fast" means (3G vs. Edge) and what "half the price" means (based on first gen. (8GB) vs 3G (8GB) purchases.

"Twice as fast as what?" "Half the price of what?" Technically the 16GB model isn't half the price, it was $499 and now it's $299 -- half would be $250. That's where the explanation is really needed, and it's there. There is NO reading of the asterisk and the information that could possibly refer to old iPhone CUSTOMERS.

Again, YES, AT&T WILL require a NEW 2-year contract for ALL 3G iPhone activations. Even quotes by AT&T officials that have been contradictory about other aspects have ALL confirmed this. AT&T's information about upgrading ("there is no non-commitment price for the Apple iPhone") confirms this. (That's been their "policy" re. the iPhone for the past year.) We DON'T KNOW YET what price current AT&T customers who don't have an iPhone and aren't otherwise eligible for an euipment upgrade. Some people have heard it will only be a small additional activation fee, but there's been nothing official.

So if I understand correctly, as a current iPhone user if I get a new one I can get it at the $199 price but my contract will be extended correct?

What its also saying is that it "requires new 2-year At&t rate plan, sold separately." And "Add a Consumer data plan..." - nothing about it being required...

Although I believe the memo says the data will be required...hmmm

Hold on...

I bought my iPhone last september, and is modded. So that means I can go to Apple or At&t and upgrade it for the 3G? And does it matter if you billing prices is high? need answer please.
