So I can trade in an old 4S (for which AT&T say they will give my at least $200) and put it towards the 16 GB iPhone 6 and only have to pay the California tax?

Where do I sign up?

I dont get it. So this only works if you do it at a store. And it only works if you buy another iphone from at&t rather than apple. So does that mean instead of preordering at 3am EST tomorrow, one would have to wait until an AT&T store opened, walk in, and preorder a phone thru them and at the same time trade in your old phone and be out of a phone until the new one arrives? I think we should wait for more details as this doesnt seem to be thought out for preorders only for when they have it in stock in stores (9/19).

They will probably let you use your existing iPhone until the new iPhone 6 arrives at the store and you do an exchange at the store.

My understanding is you pre-order in store (those stores that will do it), pay for the iPhones, then after they arrive the trade-in is applied and paid price is reduced. I'll know more tomorrow as I plan on being at the store b4 9am.

Just talked to a AT&T rep. and she told me that the trade in HAS to be done in store so in order to get the trade in credit you can't pre order. From my understanding if you plan to use the next program the up to $300 figure will be put towards the cost of the phone, so in return lowering monthly payments.

I guess this is a case of one hand not talking to another... The ATT rep I just talked to said that the phone credits will only apply to phones that are NOT on the next program which is a game changer for me. I was going to possibly try the next 20 but if I'm able to knock off 200bucks off of my subsidized price and not the Next financing, I just may stay on contract. I'm not leaving my carrier at any point so I don't see the true advantage.

Sounds about right. They're trying to drum up business for them and keep everything in-house. Even if it's an Apple product, ATT is still making money here by going with this strategy. Might not be for everyone but enough people will take advantage that it's a smart move for them.

That can't be true. Since AT&T started the Next program, they always try to persuade you to go Next vs. 2-yr contract.

Spoke with AT&T this morning... the rep I spoke with had no info on the minimum $200 trade-in for iPhone 4 / 4S. He suggested talking to someone at one of their retail stores.

I will try to stop at one later today and see if they know anything about this yet.

If it is "in-store", they have several days still to get the details / info out to the retail stores.

Just spoke with our local store... they do not have any info on the trade-in program yet but have had several people asking about it.

He did say how it has worked in the past is you get an ATT card with your trade-in amount on it. You can use it for things in store or use it towards your monthly bill.

As to the need to take it into a store - I think that is so they can actually INSPECT the phone. Or at least that is my take. I would hate to get a price, then mail it in, or take it in later and find out the value they assigned it was way different than I thought.

Speaking of this - my phone front glass has a small crack. I am thinking it would be worth doing a cheap ass replacement and get more money for it? Pretty sure the Apple folks check it closer, what do you all think?

$300 "minimum"? Does that mean a 32GB 5S will get more than $300? Seems fishy/incorrect

I saw this in another thread ..
http://touch.sun-sentinel.com/#section/-1/article/p2p-81328555/

The ATT rep said she gave the link to her higher in which they were unaware. She said to call back tomorrow as they commonly don't know of these types of promotion until the very last minute.

This wouldn't effect the pre-orders in the morning because they're only in-store credits.

Correct. Your phone will go far $270 max. I got offered $260 for my 16GB 5S. I'm assuming it's $300 max for a 64GB 5S.

200

So they are offering 200 for my 5. I have only used Gazelle in the past and they are only offering 165. eBay could be a bit more but you knock off 10%. Are there better options to sell a 5 anywhere?

Thanks

I just called. He said to preorder then bring your phone into the store for a credit once the new one arrives. Said it was currently 200 for my 16g 5

Apple is offering $205 (I believe)

My 5S is currently on Next, since February, and AT&T wants my phone plus $350 in order to upgrade. I'll wait a few more months and then probably make the upgrade. No rush at this point.

Since you are about 7-8 months into your payments, can't you pay the remaining 4-5 payments for a total of 12 and trade the phone in to upgrade? Wouldn't that be $150-187, how did they calculate $350?

I got my 5s Sept 21 last year, currently showing 11 payments completed. Calling *639# caused ATT text me upgrade details, showing I can return the phone and pay $32, my 12th payment.

I'm on Next 18, stupidly, so that's why. I'll wait till Jan or Feb then pay off and make the switch. I know going forward I will only do Next 12.

Might be a dumb question, but do you think they will accept an iPhone from another carrier?

It gives you the option to select another carrier when filling out all of the applicable info and advises to discontinue service with that carrier before sending your phone in, so they appear to be OK with that.

That is a bit of a bummer, though, if you can wait 6 months after the iPhone 6 launch, doing 18 months again may time it perfectly for the launch of the iPhone 7, likely the worth while upgrade, skipping the mid cycle 6s update.

Very good point. I can definitely wait. My 5S is fully functional and at the 6 month mark finding a iPhone 6 should be relatively easy.

I got the best quotes for the devices I'm looking to unload (iPad 1, possibly iPad 3, 64 GB iPhone 5S) from buybackworld.com. They were quite a bit higher than both Gazelle and buymytronics.com (who I used last year).

It would be worth it for Next users if the trade in could be split up for the Next payments. Let's say you have to pay $35/month for Next. A $300 trade in would equate to about 8 months of not paying.

I just left my local AT&T store. I asked about trading in your old phone. She wasn't sure in the value of how much you would get. But she said that to pre Order like normal through AT&T and inside of your package will be a box that you ship your old phone back to att. She said once it was received and upon inspection your account would be credited. If you decide to go the NEXT route they will take the credit give and apply towards the phone.

At this point who know what the truth is!

My iPhone 5 64GB is worth $200. I have to get a phone at AT&T and can't do pre-order? Whereas I can sell my iPhone on craigslist or through some other options for $250-400. No thanks AT&T.
