This guy is lying. Don't trust him. He is just trying to stir something up. So many people here bought the 3G last July so most of them are one month away from the eligible July date for upgrading. If what this guy has said is true, why all the complaints and flaming. If what this guy said is true, why doesn't AT&T just approve everyone for the upgrade. Damn lying lunatic.

FWIW, AT&T will upgrade you early under certain circumstances. In fact, I've been with AT&T (under a family plan and then on my own) for ~10 years, and I don't recall waiting more than 13 months for a new phone at any point...a big part of that is because I have the 450 minutes/unlim data/unlim text plan, so my bill hits ~90/month, so for various reasons I tend to be randomly granted early upgrades. (Seriously-I've had times when I logged into my account and I'm 4+ months from a subsidized upgrade...and then logged in a week later and suddenly I'm set up for an upgrade.)

My theory has always been that it's a combo of how much you pay each month, your likelihood of upgrading when one is available, and how badly they want to recycle their existing smartphone stock. It seems like they roll out "upgrades" when they're a month to a month and a half away from a major lineup overhaul.

This is definitely encouraging. I'm eligible for an upgrade on 7/29/09 and am on unlimited voice and data so my monthly bill is at least $150 when everything is said and done. Has anyone else tried this apart from the original poster and had any luck with an early upgrade to the 3G S?

Tried today, they wouldn't budge. We even threw the "we've been paying over $250 a month to you guys for the past 5 years, and have been with you for the past 17 years" lol.

I'm a little confused about how the OP would have the subsidized price available in July if he has an iPhone 3G. I bought mine a day or two after launch and I won't be eligible until December.

I got mine on launch day and was told no early upgrade and they couldnt do the within 30 days thing for iphones. but come in on july 12th and they'd be glad to sell me a 32gb for 299. so im not complaining. FWIW, my bill is $130/mo before taxes. so ATT are looking at recovering their 3g subsidy alot quicker at 130/mo vs 70-90/mo.

All lies

My family has been with the same store and manager for 10 years. Two family plans, one is $130 a month, the other is $170 a month. We got two early upgrades because we pay so much (probably), but no budging on the other two phones. This was online, not any human decision made by a manager. They don't have discretion on the iphones, it;s just the formula.

My guess is probably because your monthly bill is on the low end. I got my first iphone last year around the end of July and will be eligible for an upgrade this year around July 30th. My bill is $150 a month usually with taxes etc.

That would make sense. I pay almost exactly $70/month for the cheapest voice plan + data + 200 SMS + fees/taxes - school discount.

I don't know why exactly I am do to it.. but I do have a family plan 99.99 plus 2 lines one iphone 9.99 + 30.00 and other regular phones 9.99 plus unlimited family text 30.00.... I have also been with them 5 years

Well i went to a corporate att store today to try it out and no luck, she said they might be able to do it once its released or to wait until July 6 (when im eligible). I told her ive been with them for 5 years and i pay $96 a month on my own plan but NOPE.

i also doubt they would do it once the phone is released

I went today to see about this at the At&t store mine is July 12th as well and I leave on the 15th for a trip so wanted to see if i could pre-order it for that date or get it within this 30 day period. I know June 19th was totally out so i said the next shipment would be fine. Basically they can do a couple days ahead of the 12th and put the order in. He suggested not take the chance, so I upgraded my wife's Blackberry account to the Iphone and paid 199 for it and when i go pick it up they will just transfer the account around for my number than on the 12th I could actually order her one under my account. We are obviously on the family plan. But I have the receipt and he said he will call me when it comes in and figured about a week or two. Which is fine for me. My current one is busted up pretty bad from dropping it and the back is just pretty cracked up. Not a big fan of cases but they have a nice hard very thin one I may get. Hopefully some new cases come out

thats why because you have only been with at&T for a year.. you need to have been with them more than that!

hmm that doesn't make sense to me. i've been an AT&T customer since probably '97-98.

bought the 2g phone the first day it came out.
bought the 3g phone the first day it came out. which locked me to the 18 month contract.

but i'm not eligible till dec. last i checked the website (for 3G S)

the only thing i've done drastic since is started a family plan beginning of the year.

what did i do wrong?

EDIT: i just saw a few other comments on possibly its cuz lower voice/data plan. i do have the lowest iphone plan currently available so maybe that's it?

yup I definitely think the lower monthly plan is a factor. I just signed up with ATT last year to get the 3G, bought it around the last week of July and an eligible for an upgrade end of July. My monthly bill is about $150.
