I think so too, because what I got out of your question was if you switched to this new plan and used an upgrade (renewed your contract), would AT&T's retention department let you keep it at $15/month.

I see both sides of it. Though it's odd that you commit to two years with etf and in return pay 25 more a month per line

My final summary:

Current Plan:
4 GB: $70 - 23% discount = $54
2 Lines @ $40 = $80
Total = $134 + it cost me $200 x 2 lines to purchase the phones

New Plan:
10 GB: $100 - 23% discount = $77
2 Lines = $15 x 2 = $30
Next for 2 Lines = $27 x 2 = $54
Total = $161

Difference = $27 total, or $13.50 per line

$13.50 per line x 12 months = $162

So I would go from 4 GB -> 10 GB
Per Line, at $162 a year, I get a new phone EVERY YEAR

Prior to all these fancy plans coming out, is there anyone that wouldn't happily take their iPhone 5S into an apple store after 1 year and exchange it + $162 cash for a brand new iPhone 6 ?????? $162 for a new phone. That's slick
Have you ever thought about the $27 x 2 x 12 = $648 that you are paying to AT&T every year? It is like a car lease. At the end of the year, you have to turn in your phone when you upgrade because you don't own it. You are basically giving AT&T a free phone every year. Whereas if you did two year contracts, you own two phones at the end of your term which you can basically sell for $200-300 each, which is more than for the next $199x2=$398 you'd need for your new phones.

That $25 is paying the subsidy. Carriers aren't covering the difference between the contract price and actual price of a phone out of the goodness of their hearts.

AT&T has only sweetened deals with family plans over the years. They've never helped out the individual plan users. This alone is why I'm jumping ship for t-mobile or straight talk.

Yep. It is absolutely ridiculous that they don't include personal hot spot with their individual plans. I wanted to add personal hot spot to my plan as I occasionally have a situation where it would be pretty handy and found out it would cost me an extra $25-$40 a month with either having to move to a shared plan or add on extra data I don't need. And if I switched I would not be able to switch back. I'm really kicking myself for not switching back a few months ago.

I have 6 lines, 3 smartphones and 3 basic phones.

(And as far as upgrades go, we do not upgrade as often since we usually last 2 years with devices... so no skin off our backs.)
So every two years you will pay $650*3=$1950 to get new phones out of contract, whereas previously you'd be paying $199*3=$597 for such a 3 phone upgrade? I am just not seeing the appeal here, or I am missing something.

So I'm trying to figure out the math. It seems like I have to put a value on 10GB of data. My wife says it doesn't make sense but I'm wondering if you all agree or if my math is off.

Keep in mind I upgrade each year. I usually pay $549 per phone and sell my old phone for $350.

2 iPhones 5s, 2 iPads

Code:
Current (4GB) Family Value(10GB) Family Value Next 10GB
$170($2040 a year) $150($1800 a year) $150($1800 a year)
$398($1098-700 upgrade) $798($1498 - 700 upgrade) $900($37.5 x 12 x2)
$2438 total $2598 total $2700 total

We don't usually use all of our 4GB. In fact we just got our 65% warning today and only have 10 days left in our billing period.

I like others jumped at this offer and am already thinking about calling to cancel the changes. I guess my main question is 10GB worth $13.3 dollars a month or $160 a year? Would you ride the discount till you had to buy(sept-oct) new phone(s)? Or do you think the plans will cost more for those trying to do that? Heck will I even be able to buy 2 new phone at $549 or did I give up my discount when I changed to the Family Value?

Thanks for reading. Please let me know if I might be wrong in my math or there is a detail I'm missing.

How do FANs count toward these new plans? I have 22% off my voice plan now. But voice isn't itemized anymore.

Also, I'm on a family plan now. Just upgraded 2/3 to iPhone 5S. Is this going to hurt me in any way if I want to switch to this plan?

FAN applies to the data portion.

Just switched. Gave up my unlimited data and thought I never would. 3 iPhones, 10gb data, $125 after my FAN discount. Saving myself $35 per month and getting unlimited talk, text and more data than we ever use.

Fantastic deal if you ask me!

I don't think it's rape. Did you read my post?

$15 non-subsidized - > $40 subsidized = $25

$200 iphone / 24 = $8.33

$25 + $8.33 = $33.33

It's pretty much the exact same thing. Am I wrong?

I did not. I'll have to clarify when the time comes for upgrading the wife's phone. Thanks bud

Contract or not, you've always been paying $650 for your phone whether it is an iPhone or Android. Your twenty-four month contract has $20 built into your monthly charge to pay back the $450 "discount" they provide you at the time you sign the contract. This is why it is a 24-month contract, they need you locked, obligated, and anchored to them for that time to repay the "discount". That's why the ETF is there if you decide to cancel service or switch carrier.

That might be true but the next time a regular user faces the decision of either getting a new phone and paying $30 more per month or waiting a bit longer..... A lot of people will wait.

At 25 times 24 months that's 600 plus you pay 200 for the phone on contract that's $800 not including tax. Almost seems cheaper to buy outright

No prob. As a macrumors reader, I wasn't looking forward to seeing rumors of a sweet iPhone 6 not being able to upgrade without a huge cost.
Sure to nickel and dime it there's probably a way to save a few bucks, but in my opinion if the cost per month to get a new phone, every single year, is marginal, like the cost of a lunch or something... I don't think it's worth over thinking.
That wasn't the case in September when the Next plans first came out, but with this new strategy, it's pretty cool.

I mean heck, every iPhone I've had seems to have a great battery then 1.5 years into my contract magically I get poor battery life. With a 12 month phone, that problem is gone!

Okay thank you for also getting the same number I did; so for the base iPhones (16GB), with the contract we are paying an EXTRA $150, right?! Because if I'm correct, the phones by themselves are $650.

Now, I'm seeing a lot of hate for Next, but my question is why? Don't you only pay the device's price with this? Aka, you pay $650, and not $800? I'm having trouble understanding why people would want to do the contract...

A lot of people aren't intelligent

AT&T won't care. They don't make money off the phones. Next or no next. If you go to this new plan you realize the full outright price is 650 not 200, right? Next is just no interest financing on the full price of the device. AT&T does not make interest off of next they just avoid having to subsidize the price of the phone.
AT&T does not want you to take the 200 option that's why they have next and thats why they have these plans. These plans just make next a much better option than a 2 year when the cost is the same on a monthly basis and you avoid the 200 upfront cost plus the upgrade fee.

Yes I'm fully aware of that. I'll weigh my options when it's time to upgrade my wife's phone later this year.

Wow! As of December 20,2013, we were paying around $140 or so for 2 lines each with 2 Gb, sharing 700 minutes, had to pay for texts, and no tethering. My wife's contract ended and we switched to free texting and calling with 2 Gb shared for $120. We use very little data except the occasional month when we are traveling or power goes out (thank you Hurrricanes Irene and Sandy). Fast forward to today and I just switched us to the new plan - $130 for 10 Gb, unlimited texts and calling, and no fear of lots of tethering and streaming.

Only problem with what I said was that you can STILL choose to do the 2-year upgrade, it's just silly to do it. Next/outright are much more affordable.

Next and outright, however, are the same exact price! You might actually prefer Next, depending on how much you sell your phone for and all that.

Ok great. Can't believe it took 7 pages for all this to get ironed out lol.
But is it true that if you're on the Next program, you always have to give the phone back to them ?
