Scorpio1973.....it is post like yours that are making me mad.....how come you are eligible and I am not if we both got the 3gs on the date it was released?

It is one thing to treat everyone the same but this randomness is BS....I actually am inclined not to even believe you.....Att would have so many pissed off customers if it were true

TuffLuffJimmy.....just explain how any 3gs owner is eligible for a full upgrade and I'll just suck it up and be quiet.....because I have read several blogs and news articles stating 3gs owners were eligible and according to my math they are not

IDK my bff Jill. Who says 3GS owners are eligible? I've only read "iPhone owners". All I know is that I'm eligible, since I'm a 3G owner.

Just so you know where I am coming from this is a quote from MACWORLD

"This includes customers nearing the end of their contracts (which AT&T labels “Upgrade Eligible”) in addition to customers who have at this point only completed a year and a half of their contracts (labelled eligible for an “Early Upgrade”—this also includes most early-adopter 3GS owners). This allows most of us who picked up a 3GS in its first few months to buy the iPhone 4 on launch day at its advertised price."

so you can see my frustration......surely Macworld knows the 3gs has only been out for a year.

I am really not sure why I am eligible. I didn't get my phone until the end of June (the 28th to be exact) not launch day. Maybe it has something to do with the amount of my monthly bill? I did the *639# thing and the message I got back was: "As a valued customer, we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee."

<< hi-fives scorpio >> guess we'll be getting our 1/299 iPhone 4's eh?

Sorry I couldn't resist. No need to get angry @ forum users Mercury7.

I got a 3G on launch day and never been late in my year or so of service, plus I spend > 100/month for my line + fan , and it looks like i'm given full subsidy.

My 3GS contract expires in 2011 and AT&T says I'm eligible for a full upgrade, so I don't really get it either.

The only thing I can think of is that when I upgraded to the 3GS last June 26th, I paid an extra $200 because I was doing an "early upgrade". So maybe paying that extra $200 last year, plus keeping the service for a year, makes me eligible. This June will be two years since I last purchased an phone at the "full upgrade" price.

CONTRACT INFORMATION

Who knows. Maybe they'll roll it back magically so that I'm not eligible, just like they did the other night so that I am eligible.

So I can upgrade for $500 or pay a $120 termination fee and then buy a new one for $300. Hmmm...
Check into that.

Carriers usually make you wait 90 days after you cancel before you're eligible to sign back up and get the "new customer" price.

sweeet i bought my 3gs on July 14th, but I pay 100$ a mo for my phone so maybe thats why i can upgrade, will be selling my phone for well over 300$ ;D

I still have the 1st Gen iPhone, I guess I am good to go...:)

I'm in the same situation, but my phone is working like crap. Incoming calls almost never go through, text messaging is delayed a few hours...could be due to dropping it but its annoying. Does anyone know if AT&T will allow me to upgrade to the 3gs today and then use their 30 day satisfaction return policy to get the iphone 4 when it comes out on the 24th?

I don't know what to say to some but this is my case. . .

I skipped the iPhone 3G launch in 08' and last year, launch day, I brought the 3GS. I qualify for the iPhone 4 full discount price(I want the 32GB so I'll pay $299). I don't know how but I do. Maybe it's because I skipped the 3G launch?

I also have another line, for a family member, on my account but I'll have to pay $499 because I got that line added August 2010.

So confusing...

Here is my situation:

I joined AT&T a week before the launch of the 3G and I was first in line to buy the 3G iPhone in 2008. I paid the subsidized price for the 3G. Last year I pre-ordered the 32Gb 3GS for $499.99 with the early upgrade, and I got it the day it was released.

I pay over $100 every month. I have a family plan w/3 lines. 2 of them have iPhone 3GS.

My upgrade eligibility claims that I must pay full retail price and my next upgrade may happen on Feb 11, 2011.

My question is, why do some people get the full upgrade eligibility when they bought the 3GS after launch? and Why is AT&T not offering me an early upgrade option? This is just absurd. Can someone please explain to me what is going on?

I noticed on AT&T's press release on iPhone 4 they still mention the full subsidized price for anyone with an upgrade between now and the end of 2010 paying $299 for the top model. So who qualified for the "early upgrade" option that is $499 for the top model?

Any clarification would be appreciated.

almost identical to my situation. although i've been with att since 2005 and my monthly bill is ~250. says i'm not eligible until 2/19/11 i think. for some reason i got a full discount on my 3gs, but i don't know why because my wife wasn't and we got our 3g's the same day. so i think something is screwy with my account. att has so many bs rules and loopholes (like any large company) i'm sure they'll find a way to tell me i'm f'd until 2011.

OK, someone in another thread (goobot) pieced this together:

AT&T customers that are in 24-month contracts (and spend more than $69/month on a line) qualify for a "full upgrade" after being in their contract for 18 months.

So anyone who bought the iPhone 3GS last June would be eligible for a full upgrade in December 2010 (or "now", since AT&T is letting anyone with a 2010 upgrade go now). Anyone who bought the iPhone 3GS after June will be eligible for a full upgrade sometime in 2011 or later.

Here are AT&T's upgrade policies:

For people on family plans, the additional lines are under $69/month, so I guess they can't get upgraded until 20 months into the contract. :(

I can confirm that this is true on my account.

I have a $79.99 plan and was given upgrade eligibility. My wife is on the family plan and she was given a 20 month upgrade date (February 2011). My mother-in-law just got a new phone and was also given a 20 month date (early 2012).

My wife really wants the iPhone 4 and if they give a reduced discount (pay an extra $100) I may just get it for her anyway.

Here's that 'early reduced pricing' for all of those that have 2011 eligibility.

What I don't understand, is that if I am within the $69 - 98.99 bracket, at&t policy indicates I would be eligible within 18 - 23 months. What determines whether it is 18 - 23 months? Well the fine print states: "Customer eligibility may vary based on credit history, payment history, payment status, customer type and other factors. "

I never had a late payment and been a customer since 2005. I am not eligible until Feb. 2011 and originally pre-ordered the 3Gs back in June 09. Strange indeed...

Has anyone been able to call ATT and have them change their date.
Me and my brother bought the 3GS when they came out. And I am eligible for upgrade at $199, but my brother is not (we are guessing he has to pay $399). We are on a family plan...

That is because of the amount you pay on each line, I am assuming your are the primary and your brother is the secondary.

Well duh, you bought the 3GS unsubsidized then, silly.

Half-subsidized. :D. I paid $200 extra for an "early upgrade" last year. It would have cost $400 extra if it were totally unsubsidized.

Sweet Jesus! I thought the iPhones were only $200 more unsbubbed. That's crazy! Why does an iPhone end up costing more than an iPad? There can't be that much more in the iPhone, can there?
