Verizon iPhone

This is more evidence that the Verizon iPhone is coming later this year. Maybe no mention today, but AT&T is giving up a lot to get people to re-up their two year contracts. That way they will have fewer people jumping ship when the Big Red announcement takes place. There is no other motivation for AT&T to make this offer.

Looks like we're SOL as of now, I explained to the rep every year in the past I've been able to upgrade at "reduced" equipment pricing. I'm not looking to get a full upgrade and I have no problems reupping on a 2 year contract.

She pulled up my account, went through it saw every year that I upgraded at reduced pricing, my account is in good standing, yada, yada..

But ATT has stopped designating every iPhone reduced pricing eligible. The primary number on qualifying family plans are eligible but other lines have to wait the 18-20months to qualify for reduced pricing.

She said she can't change the date, so it'll still be at Feb, and I'll bide my time hope Verizon picks up the iPhone and they release it by Feb and I'll jump to them.. As I said, I'm not expecting a full upgrade, but since the iPhone was released on ATT every year I've been eligible for reduced so it's a tad concerning when ATT is going to stray from a precedent they established..

And AT&T hooked you up each year so be happy. By all means jump ship in Feb to Verizon that means more network for us and you will get a subsidized phone every 2 years.. Your getting a better deal with AT&T I love when people like you are like "Verizon and drooling hehe"

Early upgrade

I only got my 3GS last October, and it says I'm already eligible for an upgrade. Right now it says only to another 3GS (a white 32GB or a black 16GB), but maybe that will change after the launch.

Yesterday night after reading the post i went to at&t web and checked my eligibility, my phone was showing discounted prices EX $199 for 32GB 3GS, my wife was not eligible, now im looking again and it shows im not eligible. i have my 3GS may 2009.
Anyone having the same problem???
Thanks

You may wanna check when you got the 3GS. It was not released in May 2009.. Do you mean June or July?

A better deal with ATT? please show me this "Better" deal..

YES! I'm eligible for an upgrade. I was about to give up on getting the new iPhone and just using the $450 towards a new car; now I can have both. Thanks, AT&T, for making my month--until I get a new car, that is. :D

My upgrade doesn't give me an exact date to when it took affect but I can now get 199-299 iPhone 3GS. So I guess they bumped me as well. Last week it was October for me.

Go ahead switch to VZW... When you are not eligible for an upgrade less each year you will regret it.. Roll the dice maybe you will be the one banking a yearly upgrade but knowing VZW history it will NOT happen.. Better network YES, Better Customer Service YES, Stuck with the same iPhone and not eligible for new one each year YESSS..

Just something people aren't really thinking about...

All you hear is VZW this, VZW that.. Go jump but be ready for that one catch.. Once they have you no reason to let you upgrade hehe.

Mine was September. I assume it took place last night around midnight or so; I checked my account yesterday so I could pay my bill.

No Verizon iPhone in 2010 sorry.

This is for when Verizon gets it in the middle of 2011.

I might be retarded for asking this... but would appreciate you guys' knowledge on this matter.

I am currently about one year into my contract (not an iphone, just a regular phone) with AT&T, and for now system is showing me as only qualifying to upgrade to iphone 3GS for $399 (16GB) which is $200 more.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to terminate my existing contract and sign-up again? I am pretty sure my etf is still the old $175 and take away the one year or so at $5/mo my ETF would be just over $100. Could I get the $199 for new customer pricing this way or is it not possible?

I called AT&T support staff and the lady, though very nice, had no ideas what I was talking about... Thanks in advance.

Yes it'll be cheaper for you to cancel and sign up as new customer, but all major wireless carriers have restrictions on signing up for new contracts for 90 days after you cancel one. So you either have to get someone else to sign up for you, or wait 90 days.

pal :)

EDIT: you cannot sign up for a new contract for 90 days after you cancel one with the same carrier. My post above might be confusing to some in this regard.

I see a lot of 3GS owners in here who got bumped to eligible today. How many of you were Day 1 3G owners who upgraded to the 3GS at the time you were eligible and still got the bump to eligible today?

I was told that I couldn't go from the 3G to the 3GS until Oct or Nov, I can't remember. I figured it was stupid to buy a 3GS when it was only ~6mo until a really new iPhone.

I tried to do that once, and customer service told me I'd have to wait 50 days or something to sign a new contract. You probably didn't get the early upgrade because you don't have an iPhone; however, you still have somewhat of an upgrade. I would pay the $399 and just leave the contract alone.

$100 (ETF) $200 (new iPhone) $50 (activation)= $350 (not including tax).

EDIT: As said above by "coolpal" the wait is 90 days. So you'd have $350 AND 90 day to waste rather than just $417.

No such luck for me. Still 11/12/2010. I'm well over a year into a 2-year Blackberry contract. But my monthly bill is less than $100, which sounds like the reason I'm not getting the offer.

Question though... has anyone tried talking to ATT to get the upgrade earlier? Do they ever manually override this, or am I going to just get a stern shake of the head and a finger pointing to the exit door? I want my iPhone!

No waived upgrade fee for me & the cart shows the $199 price for a 3Gs. I'll be waiting like I planned, since my contract is up for renewal in February 2011. Given that I'm on the 450-minute voice plan, and work gives me a decent discount, I'm not profitable enough for them to even think about letting me upgrade early without making me pay extra.

I confess that I'm not. I bought the original iPhone in Feb '08 when they introduced the 16GB variant. I kept it until June of '09 when the 3GS came out, then I upgraded that weekend.

The only thing 'better' about Verizon is if you live in an area with good Verizon service and poor ATT service. Verizon prices and rules suck just as much as ATT, and many are far worse. The only way I would leave ATT is if they offer the phone with Sprint and/or T-Mobile. At least with either of those two I could save some money.

it says I am due for an upgrade in September even though I only bought my 3GS in January 2010? so soon?

nice. i jumped ship from vzw to att in jan 2010 and i'm only eligible for a discounted upgrade price (399). i'd still have to renew my contract and would suffer the new ETF. no thanks. i think i'll go ahead and just pay retail on this bad boy :D

still nothing from AT&T about eligibility status, considering I am on a family plan with two iphone 3GS' bought on day 1. AT&T better step their game up
