Turns out I had two lines that are available for upgrade if I pay my balance. If on your account it shows a line that does not give you a date for upgrade, it is possible that it is available now, but you have to pay whatever balance remains on your account. That was the issue with mine. It said it was not available for upgrade but did not give me a date. Talked to an AT&T rep and they said it was as long as I pay my balance. Cool beans.

my other line is able for upgrade and i dont want the iphone5 on that line so im gonna buy it on that line and put it on my other line

do i really need to go into the store to change that over though?

I was about to say no, just swap the SIM cards and then call up customer service to have them adjust the data plans accordingly. But then I realized that with the new nano-SIM, you will have to go to the store. They will have to either swap the info on the cards or give you a new nano-SIM card.

Beware of the swap though if that is the route you take. I did this with the iphone 3g and gave my mom the phone and got on a family plan but they left the iphone data plan on my moms phone. She had a simple phone no data necessary and i ended up paying for that data for a year and was pretty much told nothing could be done.

So I just got a message from AT&T saying, "As a valued customer, we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and an $36 upgrade fee". Am I right in assuming this means that once the iPhone 5 is released, Ill be able to walk into an AT&T store, and upgrade to the iPhone 5 for $36?

no that means you have to buy the phone and there is an additional upgrade fee

$199 + $36

honestly i'm not sure but from my research you may not have to (which is a surprise to me).

You can cancel the iphone data plan if you're not using an iphone on that line any longer.
So answer is yes. You just gotta put the sim inside a regural dumbphone and call them up.

Offcourse they left it.
If you didnt call them up to remove it you really expected them to do it on their own?
That's your own fault not being on top of it and letting it go on for a year.

Because I paid more than $100 on my line per month, I have been entitled to a yearly upgrade for as long as I have been checking.

This year, it says that I'm not eligible until 5/5/13 from my launch day 4S. Is this an AT&T oversight that I can call to get fixed, or is it a policy change? Does anyone get yearly upgrades anymore?

Thanks for the help.

I got a 4S because my 4 was completely busted and out of warranty this Feb, and AT&T sent me an email saying to check on their website to see if i'm eligible. Upon logging in I got this message

"As a valued AT&T customer, you're eligible for a discounted iPhone upgrade at a reduced discount, along with a 2-year service commitment"

Not the full subsidized $199 pricing, but $449 which is still better then buying it completely out of contract... Grandfathered into unlimited data so i'm not going anywhere

Here's a question. Since I'm only eligible for an upgrade "at full retail price", will that still reset my upgrade date for the next iPhone?

Right now I wouldn't get the 5 at a discount until May 2013. So if I get the 5 for $449, will that still reset my upgrade date for the future?

yes... you're still upgrading.

Ugh I hate AT&T.

You signed a contract for 2 years so you could get subsidized pricing, then complain because they only give you a $250 off when you wanna upgrade less than a year later??? My friend on Verizon got his phone before mine and is offered nothing but full retail price $699 or whatever it is. So be happy they are offering it for $449 after having it for less then a year. Or skip the 5 and get 5S/6 when your upgrade cycle comes around. You could also just pay full price and get the $199 pricing next year. Could also find one on Craigslist from somebody who bought it and doesn't want it

The $450 price is with a 2 year contract.
You're not paying full price, full price non contract would be $650 for the 16GB model.
