Rumors are true!

Hey all! just went to my local AT&T store, and they have confirmed this internal memo that modmyi.com has discovered.

I had bought my iPhone 16GB 3GS on May 8th (Lucky Me!!) and the salesman I talked to said I was obviously within the May 7th to June 7th upgrade eligibility so all I would need to do is on June 15th, iPhone 4 pre-order day, is to pre-order a new iPhone 4 at upgrade pricing $199 (16GB) and within 7 to 10 days, most likely June 24th, when the new iPhone 4 comes out, I can return my iPhone 3GS, as long as I have the box, receipt and all accessories. As soon as I do, they will credit my method of payment for the iPhone 4, so in turn I will be able to upgrade to the brand new iPhone 4 16GB for $0.

I assume if I wanted to put the extra $100 towards the iPhone 4 32GB on pre-order day, I would be credited $100 dollars less, but I think the 16GB would suffice. Just wanted everyone to know the good news, if you made a bonehead mistake like me and purchased the iPhone 3GS a month before WWDC 2010!

Cheers,
Cant wait to film in HD and have some face time on my brand new iPhone 4!

or they didn't have an iPhone already, wanted to get grandfathered in on the unlimited data plan, and plan on returning it for an iPhone 4 when they are released.

that too ;)

but, that was an after thought. the person that bought it for her as a gift didn't have any idea, and no reason to turn down a free iphone, that she can now upgrade for free :)

I'm amazed AT&T is offering this kind of deal. I know someone who does not follow tech and bought an iPhone a couple of weeks ago. Now this person can upgrade to iPhone 4 at minimal or no cost.

people bitch and moan a lot about ATT. and I know these sorts of policies are always made first to protect the company's franchise and optimize future revenues. still it's inarguable that this policy, like the recent rate plan changes and the loosening of the upgrade eligibility rules, benefits most of us. a lot. knock the company's signal coverage but I don't think it's fair to fault the way the company's dealing with us otherwise. once another carrier gets the iPhone we might learn it's done pretty well with coverage, too, considering the pressure the phone's users put on the network.

3GS to 4 upgrade for online orders too?

or they didn't have an iPhone already, wanted to get grandfathered in on the unlimited data plan, and plan on returning it for an iPhone 4 when they are released.

I did this - My wife as been clinging to her RAZR for years but when I heard that the unlimited data plan was going away, I quickly ordered a 3GS online from AT&T for her so the plan would be grandfathered in. It arrived on Monday - And though she's happy with the 3GS (consider the upgrade!) I'd like for her to have an iPhone 4.

So, the memo clearly states "local store purchases"... I wonder if I can still do the pre-order/swap if it was ordered online?

Yeah I don't get this, does this mean if I wanted to switch to ATT and activate a new family plan with 2 phones, I would not be able to?

How I read it was one new line per customer as long as your wife is with you in line she is the customer for the second line no worries

Pre-order 7am

NOTE: Last time (3GS) AT&T opened at 7am, it was exclusively for those customers that pre-ordered for their phone to be ready to pick up on launch day. I hope that is the case this time too because I am planning on pre-ordering my new phone this year.

Confused!

Can someone help me out here? I purchased my 3GS on launch day last year and paid $299 at that time. In September I bought my wife a 3GS as well for $199. Back in september it said I would be eligible for an upgrade on December 20th. Somehow when we got my wife and Iphone the idiot at the AT&T store changed my wife over to the primary account holder even though I have been the primary for over 3 years. Now its giving me the February 20th of 2011 date as my upgrade!! I called last month and put myself back as primary. It still shows 2-2011 as my upgrade date. Last week, I called AT&T and they pretty much said "screw you!"
What do I need to do to get my eligibility changed back so I can get the the subsidized price on the 24th? Thanks guys for your help.

If she is showing as the primary then upgrade her phone with the discounted price. After the upgrade, tell AT&T you want to swap phone models on your lines. I'd recommend walking into a store and talking to a sales rep versus talking to the clueless phone reps.

What are lines at AT&T stores generally like? If I get there at 6 am would I be out by 8? Normally I wouldn't care, but I'm leaving early in the morning on a trip. Debating whether to do this or just have the phone shipped to my hotel.

From my experience the lines are never THAT bad, but AT&T stores never seem to have enough stock. When I got my 3g, I worked all day got to the Apple store and was able to leave out with a 3G no problem. They apparently capped the line though in order to have more to sell for the next day. I will pre-order this go around though because again I will be working and just want to make sure I get one.

I don't get what the big deal is. Preorder from Apple's site on the 15th for delivery on the 24th, just like the iPads. No waiting in lines, no fuss.

I bought from the Apple Store so I don't even know if this applys to me or not. But I was one of the people who needed a phone ASAP as mine had broke, heck I wasn't even eligible for a full discount and paid $399 for my 16GB 3Gs. Sucked but I needed a new phone ASAP.

Anyone know if you upgraded to a 3GS in an Apple store if this applies? Or if only it was an ATT store. Cause if not that kinda sucks.

WoW, I swear there was one iPhone that I purchased that tacked on another 2 years onto my contract...Maybe it was a bad dream. Well thanks for the clarification all. I'm still trying to decide whether paying 499 for the 32 gig is worth it.

I checked my eligibility, and it says that I am only eligible for a small discount and not the low low price. :(

I'm in the same boat. I would have to pay an extra $100 if I wanted to upgrade now. And by the time I could get the full discount price, a new iPhone would be coming out in 6 months anyway.

As nice as this new one is, I think I'll wait. The talk about other carriers being available within a year is also a factor. If that means I can lose AT&T next year that might be worth it.

glad they are opening early. and glad to see them giving those recent customers a chance to either get some money back, or still switch for the iPhone 4

New iPhone in 6 months? You know something that we don't know about? ;):p

Because of an emergency, I purchased a 3GS on May 14 at an Apple store. When I read about ATT's offer, I immediately called Apple and they said they would honor ATT's policy. Just to be certain I went to the Apple store and the manager there confirmed it. He wrote on his business card that I was eligible to exchange my phone for iphone 4 and attached it to my receipt.

I purchased the iPhone 3GS the day it came out, so I still have to wait until Feb 2011 for the lowest price unless I want to pay an extra 200 on top of the subsidized price, $18 for the activation fee, and take on another 2 years on my current 1.6 year contract.

I'm still trying to decide if it is worth it or not.

Hell if I wait until Feb 2011 to upgrade, I might as well wait for the next generation iPhone that should be released in June 2011.

Decisions decisions.

I guess the iPhone 3GS with the iOS 4 will be fine for me. I can't really support the idea of paying so much and then getting locked down for almost 4 years with AT&T. What would my eligibility be for the next iPhone then with a 2.6 years contract existing when it is released?? SIGH~~~~

Same here. I think my 3GS with iOS4 will suffice until next June.

The big deal is that previously when you were able to order online you had to have your phone activated which could kick in a day or two before you got it. And if it's the same line that's an issue. Sure you could try signing up for a new line on a different account but if ATT doesn't approve that you are stuck. Plus they aren't always the nicest about changing numbers and if your own phone doesn't use a microsim you can't just do that. Depends on how lucky you are with getting a decent rep

Here's my guess. With most products they update you have a window of two weeks after the announcement to get a price adjust, return etc so long as you bought within 2 weeks. That's all in keeping with their typical return/adjustment policy.

if they stick to that. then you'd have until the 14th if you bought no earlier than 24th of May. but since it's not out yet, they would have to give you until the 24th of June. However ATT only gives you 30 days to return a phone with no ETF so long as you cancel service etc. So on the iphone you'd have 30 days to do the exchange which would be at the same eligibility as the returning item. Stretching from June 7 to June 24th would fit in that range. so I'm guessing that ATT is adjusting their side to match it. just as Apple adjusted their general return policy to fit ATTs grace period.
Now if this is all true, the remaining question is will they also go 30 days back. so basically if you both after May 7th you can swap up no issues.

iPhone 4 policies

So if you're a new customer, and you have two people in your family who would like the iPhone 4, you can't do that? Or is it one new line per person on the plan?

Ok, I am here to clear up a few things for everyone. I work for AT&T, and I had the same concerns about adding new lines if you are a new customer. My Area Manager assured me that if you are coming from another provider you can add more than one line as long as you have more than one person with you. So if you want three lines for you, yourself, and your child. If you bring all three, you will be just fine. AT&T is not stupid enough to turn away business because they are worried about fraud, or running out of stock on the first day. Now it could be different in different markets/areas, but at my store, I will be more than happy to set up 10 lines as long as you have 10 people with you
