What are lines at AT&T stores generally like? If I get there at 6 am would I be out by 8? Normally I wouldn't care, but I'm leaving early in the morning on a trip. Debating whether to do this or just have the phone shipped to my hotel.

Get there at 5 (they open at 7) and take your chances. Or pre-order?

I was at an AT&T core store last year for the 3GS launch in a pretty populated area. I got there 15 minutes before opening and was in the first wave of have-pre-orders to be drawn in. The stand-by line was probably 10-15 deep.

I have a feeling this deal is to cover AT&T's butt. The iPhone 4 has a new antenna system. Could bumping up upgrade eligibility dates and offering this deal have anything to do with reducing the number of 3GS phones and dropped calls on their network?

AT&T has never been known for being generous.

What is has to do with is marketing to then get you to sign up when it first becomes avail. Then you are locked in for 2 more years. This is important to them this go around since the exclusivity ends. If another carrier pickes up the iphone they want to tie up their existing customer base. Thet also increased the termination fee to a point to make you think twice at jumping ship 6 months from now.

Multiple phones - not through AT&T it seems

In the PDF it states:

How many devices can I preorder?
AT&T stores will sell one iPhone 4 per person for new customers, and one device per household for new orders placed online. Existing customers may purchase one per eligible telephone number online or through our stores.

Hopefully if you pre-order through Apple.com you can pick up more than one. Sucks for people trying to get into a Family Plan.

why not just pre order????

I thought you couldn't preorder at ATT and pick it up on the 24th. And regardless of if I preordered, I'd still have to wait in line. My options are to either show up really early on the 24th and hope I get through the line in time, or order it from apple for delivery to my hotel, though I'm kinda nervous about doing that.

What I am hoping for is my upgrade (limit one for upgrading) + my wife's new att contract (limit one for new contact) would be ok with just me walking in the store.

Im sure I am not the only one wanting to create a family plan with this video calling thing now.

Actually, this just caught my eye (underlined below):

So if we want to get into the family plan and members have existing phone numbers, we can purchase one per eligible phone #. That should work, maybe...

June 14th is a Monday, isn't it?

Somebody at AT&T needs to learn how to use their Calendar app. June 14th was a Sunday in 2009. In 2010 it's a Monday.

Alternatively, AT&T will offer those iPhone 3GS customers who purchases handsets between May 7th and June 7th the option to upgrade to iPhone 4, only paying applicable price differences.

ok, so my GF got a 16gb 3Gs on May 24th for $199. the iphone 4 is selling for 199. does this mean she can get it for $0 since there is no price diff???

Haven't decided yet whether to pre-order or go to the store. But I have a question, anyone who can answer, please PM me. I'm a current AT&T subscriber (since the 3G came out) with two 3Gs on a FamilyTalk account. If I pre-order two iPhone 4s (and thereby extend my contract another two years), do I still benefit from the 30-day grace period, during which I can cancel my contract with no ETF, that new prescribers enjoy? I'm asking b/c I just moved from an area with good AT&T service, to an area with poor AT&T service, and I haven't decided if I can stay with AT&T. It's only been a week since my move, but I am having dropped calls left and right, and I never used to have any.

I can't find this information on ATT's website. I wonder if it also applies to phones purchased at the Apple Store...

I'd rather pre-order it and go to the store, at least you know yours is waiting for you...

And I'd do it at an apple store just to be safe.

When you take several rumors together, Apple is making efforts to shift recent 3GS uptake to 4 devices and is encouraging existing 3GS owners near contract end to switch early by offering out sized consideration for early hardware exchange.

Apple wants folks to switch to iPhone 4. Listen.

There are no ATT stores near my hotel, or an Apple store. It sucks that you can't preorder and pick it up at the ATT store on the 24th. :(

disregard - reading the complete memo on modmyi says that as long as she goes in before june 22nd to initiate the exchange, then she can KEEP USING her existing 3Gs and then exchange when the stock is available, no later than June 30th. also says she's just liable for restock fee, so that would be the price diff, unless she goes 32gb. SWEET!

There are no Apple stores near me, either. Closest one is 4+ hours. Got plenty of AT&T stores, though. At least I won't be traveling so I'll pre-order online. Hopefully *fingers/toes crossed* it'll get here on the 24th like I've been told it should.

I've had my 3GS since August. I would happily pay the difference to upgrade to the 4 or even the early upgrade cost of 399. Unfortunately my only choice is no commitment pricing because I used an early upgrade to get my 3GS. Im not eligible for anything until the full subsidy in january 2011.

Is it wierd that I bought a 32GB 3GS July 30th and now, my account reflects full standard upgrade eleigibilty (ie I can get iPhone 4 32GB for $299)????

Decisions, decisions, decisions.....

AT&T, not Apple.

The biggest question for me is that if you exchange, do you keep the unlimited data? (My brother has used his new #GS for 4 days, and is already over 2 gigs of data because he uses it to stream his slingbox at work.)

I don't think it matters what your history of phones is or how you bought it. I was under the impression every under-contract AT&T customer could get a new iPhone at the $399 and $499 price points.
