I love the design of the iPhone 4 and love the screen. Why not just go with a Mac-like update routine, where you throw in a newer, faster processor as soon as one is available? The yearly iPhone reveal may be great for media coverage, but it's unrealistic when the Android gang releases a new device every 7 hours.

In the end, the reason why the iPhone 5 won't come out until this fall comes down to the this: the Great East Japan Earthquake that seriously affected the high-tech companies in the Sendai area.

Because so many high-precision computer parts are made in the Sendai region, this has interrupted production of the iPad 2 (despite Apple's claims, in my humble opinion!) and also has made it harder for Apple to obtain the components for the upcoming iPhone 5.

As such, Apple is using the delay to do two, possibly three things:

1. Give more time for the iOS programming team to polish and get ready iOS 5.0, which may have a major interface revamp. (likely already done)

2. Gives time for the iPhone hardware engineers to incorporate the near-field communications (NFC) functionality for phone-based payment systems, including full compatibility with the Sony FeliCa system that is widely used in eastern Asia. (now likely to be done with the extra time afforded by a fall release of the iPhone 5).

3. Gives time for the iPhone hardware engineers to full incorporate the latest Broadcom or Qualcomm cellphone chipset so a single-design phone is fully GSM and CDMA compatible now and be ready for LTE by an update downloaded through iTunes. (likely already done)

so why would his subsidized date be pushed back? why should it matter if iPhone isn't being released? maybe they want a Matrix or something else. that made no sense to me

Except that Mac's don't get an update as soon as a new processor is available either.

A late summer release could explain why Apple wasn't so worried about releasing a Verizon iPhone in Feb (Jan announce) because it meant they would at least have 6-7 months before a new iPhone came out.

Of course I do find it funny how people complain about a new iPhone coming out because they want the newest and latest but never a new Android.

pfft, this should not be front page news, hell not even second page... just a bunch of hearsay from a CR that knows nothing about it and speculates BS.

Yes I agree, not sure why this makes the cut just because it was stated as fact?????

A real live AT&T customer care rep! Well that is as official as it gets. Everyone knows that Apple always informs carrier customer care reps of their future plans months in advance...

Oh Wait. I heard from the Cinnabon guy that the US Government called him and officially informed him that Osama Bin Laden is still alive and being held in a secret chamber below Disney World or Disney Land.

I would guess part of the reason is the "White" Iphone was just released and they are hoping they can unload them all.

All I can say the new one better have a 4" screen, 8Meg Camera, More memory, IOS 5 and a faster processor. What else did I miss :)

Edit: added 4G to wish list

This is almost the standard specification for most Android phones any more so I don't think I'm asking for too much.

Backwards, they knew they were going to delay iPhone 5 so they saved white iPhone 4 so they'd have SOMETHING to release between 4 and 5.

What?!

I'm not saying this is fake but I work for AT&T Business Care for billing and some technical calls. We haven't been told this information yet so I don't see why that person would know. The only information we've been getting lately is the progress on AT&T buying T-Mobile.

iPhone 4 is more than enough, probably they will update at the end of the year or September. Live with it nerds.

Safe to say at this point we will have to wait. Man, I had that upgrade waiting. But then again, what's another three months to wait from the usual release date?

3 months... Or more, we don't know, that's the problem. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S2, an outstanding phone(reviews say), will be in the market. Apple, wake up.

Apple sold 34 million iPhones in the last 6 months... and how many other amazing Android phones were available then?

I bet the AT&T rep got his information from MacRumors.

Good so.
It's the return of the Mac, Steve Jobs said it so, so let's focus on Macs now and iPhone in second plan for this year at least; it's already a huge success, so...
