2GB???
what is that 2 netflix movies on 3G...
8 full length tv shows on 3g.

40 HD youtube videos?

Bad move AT&T. 5GB plan would be more reasonable.

And I thought non-US carriers were being ridiculous with their 5gb caps for the iPad. In retrospect they seem to be quite reasonable, though for a device like the iPad 5gb is quite bad. The carriers are failing to realize this is not a smart phone and is not intended to be used like one. 5gb works for a phone, barely. For an iPad it is simply a disgrace. Looks like the iPad will become a primarily Wifi device, but at that point might as well just use your laptop (it'll be faster and more capable). So much for a new wave portability in this decade.

I'm a bit confused. If I have have the 3g $30.00 option now on my iPad, will I have to keep it on permanently or can I turn it off for some months and come back later for unlimited $30.00 again.

It's a no-contract plan. AT&T automatically renews the monthly service of your choice until you tell them to stop. If your on the unlimited plan, which is, once again, a NO CONTRACT plan, and you tell AT&T to stop billing that plan at any time, it's adios unlimited.

I realize this may be a little bit off topic, but after reading all the comments (which I generally agree with) I couldn't help but wonder if we're all too addicted to our iDevices and less socially interactive. Streaming movies and all our media content to be hooked 24/7 into a cloud while we sit on the trains, no human interaction, just zombies plugged into the "cloud". When most kids are having to be taught proper Internet etiquette and as more adults are lacking the social skills necessary to communicate, it's all a bit dazzling that we demand more Internet connectivity, it's like heroine. Sorry, when it's described in these terms it's a bit... depressing...
Actually, short of the unexpected days on the convention floor this past weekend, our video streaming will be mainly limited to air video streaming of some video classes my kids are taking. We have time to use in the waiting room at speech/language therapy and it was one of the main uses for me. I don't have time to convert them before we leave and upload them to the iPad. Air video streaming is a godsend!

Settings -> General -> Useage. It will be under "Cellular Network Data".
Beware that my reported usage went from 2gb to 900mb on Friday for no reason. I have no reason to doubt the 2gb that i saw either. It didn't fix itself before the 3G expired on Monday.

This is going to be terrible for Apple's image of costumer relations since the device was clearly being marketed as being terrific for video. Multiple major content providers like Netflix and I think CBS intended to distribute their video through the iPad. Boy are they going to be disappointed.

Not really because if you have the Unlimited 3G plan you keep it. And most people can either use wifi or buy more data if they sign up after the 7th.

Considering it's not june 7th yet why would they change it before then?

Because you buy it under the pretext you will get everything that was advertised at the time of purchase. That seems virtually impossible at this point so its blatant false advertising. I sincerely hope someone sues.

Sometimes, being right feels so wrong.

AT&T just screamed at you.

That sounds like a contract equivalent to me. As I recall that's not how the devise was marketed, nor does it sound very portable.

I only have this to say:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Apple knew about this when they sold you suckers that iPad 3G, too.

Tell me again how it can do netflix streaming and will stream all of your media from "the cloud" in the next version of itunes...

How many hours of streaming HD video rentals will it take to get to your monthly cap? If you're lucky and the compression is over-the-top, you might be able to watch 3 movies a month.

Whooptie dooooooo!

Sorry, but I knew when they announced the $15 and $30 plans for the ipad that it was too good to be true, and I said as much on these forums.

Looked thru your posts going back to January and unless I missed something you said no such thing.

I suppose calling me a "sucker" makes you feel better?:)

Well lets see. If they have the new rate plans up there with the soon to be old rate plans. It will cause people to become irrational and confused on the issue. Much like some of the reactions in this thread.

It's not false Advertising because the change hasn't taken place yet.

It's not a contract extension. Because the unlimited plan you can cancel at anytime. However when it renews it will renew at the 30 dollar price point. Hence grandfathered.

And it sounds pretty portable to me.

I am really quite annoyed at this bait and switch.

We have 2 iPads, one WiFi only and one 3G.

I decided to cough up the extra $130 to "cover" myself for times when I would be out of WiFi coverage. It seemed ideal that an opt in/opt out unlimited data plan would cover us for the 2 or 3 weeks out of the year we would need it for. The ability to stream movies from Netflix and download movies from iTunes seemed perfect for our needs. We spend a lot of the 2/3 weeks a year in places where WiFi is unreliable and so it seemed worth spending the extra $130 on the capability of having unlimited data when needed. It seems that movies and streaming is now going to be out of the question and I am not happy that my $130 worth of trying to future proof has just gone down the toilet.
I know that cellular services are stretched to the limit but I paid for the capability of having an unlimited data plan for the foreseeable future, not just for a month.
Plus the iPhone data plans may be better for some people, but I dont have an iPhone so the gains are pointless to me.

The bottom line for ME is that I paid extra for an iPad with a month to month unlimited data plan and that month to month unlimited data plan has just gone bye-byes after only being available for just over ONE MONTH. Pure bait and switch and I am really annoyed about it.

Right! So if I advertise feature X, but by the time the product is shipped to you, you can only get Y, then you think that's legitimate since at the time X was offered to others? That's intentional deception (the only way its not is if Apple isn't aware, or hasn't had time to make the adequate changes; meaning it should be changed immanently). Also, the advertising said you don't have to have a continual plan, and you can opt in and out at any point and get the two data plans. From the fact that the unlimited plan has only been around for a single buying cycle and thus cannot be opted out at any time, I'd construe that as being deceptive again.

I personally don't have a problem with AT&T having a 2GB limit for $25, I'm pissed because after one month of the iPad 3G going on sale AT&T immediately changed the unlimited plan to 2GB. They offered the unlimited plan, they need to suck it up and deal with it. It's not fair to customers that were planning on buying the 3G iPad in the near future and can't get the unlimited plan. I know many people abuse the bandwidth but this is just plain rude to change it after a month.

So this will be another tie that I won't be able to brake and I will have to shell out whether I need it or not.

This sounds like unfair advertising. You lure me into buying a 3g because I like the fact that I have a choice of unlimited 3g or not, then you switch the table and tell me it is all or nothing.

I suppose I have some thinking to do. Not sure I'll trust anyone's word in the future. I can understand if this change would have happened 2 years from now but 1 month? Not fair.

Question asked on AT&T's Facebook page: Will people who buy or have bought the iPad but are still waiting for delivery get the unlimited plan if they receive the iPad after Monday?

Answer: AT&T Hi Mark, iPad customers who sign up for data on/after Monday will be required to select the new plan.

SOOOO people who have bought the iPad under the now lie of unlimited service but have not yet received their iPad are screwed. Hello, FTC?

Did you buy the service when you bought the iPad? Those are two different transactions. You'll have to make a case that a normal person believed that buying the hardware 'allocated' a service contract for you at the same time.

Good luck with that.

So if I buy a MBP with SL advertised as being included but I receive Winblows instead then I'd have a "good luck with that" service comment included?

Considering it's not june 7th yet why would they change it before then?

Because people who buy the iPad today will not receive delivery until well after Monday, and AT&T has stated they will NOT receive the unlimited service that they were PROMISED because you have to activate before Monday.

Do you have an iPad ad that says clearly "3G service plan included with purchase!"

Didn't think so.

Doesn't work that way. You're grandfathered if you remain on the unlimited plan automatically renewing each month. If you do not renew, you have canceled your service, grandfathered or not, which leaves the available plans as your only options for data going forward.

From AT&T's website (which also still lists the unlimited plan):

Plans expire when you have used all the data included in your plan, or in 30 days, whichever occurs first.
Domestic Plans automatically renew every 30 days unless you cancel prior to your Domestic Plan renewing.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Apple needs to spend that huge wad of cash on building or acquiring their own wireless network, or partnering wih other device manufacturers to do so. Over and over again these wireless carriers show their true stripes and they stifle innovation at every turn. Somehow they need to be cut out of the process.
