With tethering you can serve up a WiFi hotspot to multiple other devices. So suddenly your iPhone is serving up WiFi to your wife's PC, your son's Mac, your daughter's iPhone, and your iPad...all at the same time.

But still the data cap? Sounds like a feature of the phone, not ATT.

It's the "On the go" part that kills the "Just do it at home" part!

I may understand streaming, but in my case I personally don't even bother with that as when I stream from YouTube in HD takes ages I just don't want to see the clip/movie in pieces.

You still don't have any other network beside ATT(for the iPad)?

IT's the whole "ON THE GO" As in NOT AT HOME......part....lol

If you are an existing customer you will be allowed to keep the $29.99 Unlimited plan for the iPad.

For now. But since there is no contract don't expect that to last. It is kinda obvious that the reason they didn't require a contract originally was because this hike was the plan all long.

Don't compare it to Apple's price drop of the original iPhone. This is at&t telling iPad and heavy data users to get ****ed.

Nope, not at all. People don't even know that you can buy a Nexus One for 529 dollars. No one will switch.

And go to who, T-Mobile? Have fun with ****** EDGE coverage.

Can't work with T-Mobile if you wanted to - wrong spectrum. :'(

Quote: The reason, as usual, has to do with frequency bands. Apple advertises the iPad as running on UMTS/HSDPA 850/1900/2100 Mhz. T-Mobile's HSDPA network runs on the AWS band, at 1700 Mhz. No AWS band, no T-Mobile 3G.

Looks like i am locked into a "contract" if I want to keep my unlimited* data plan.

*until AT&T forces everyone down to the new tiers.

Network Operators to Face 3G Network Capacity Crisis in 2010

Some mobile network operators are likely to face a 3G network capacity crisis as early as next year and will need to accelerate the migration towards LTE networks, concludes a study from Unwired Insight.

The report says that 3G traffic volumes are set to increase by a factor of 20 by 2015, driven by many factors, including the increased adoption of traffic-intensive services such as mobile broadband and mobile TV services, the increased proportion of smartphones and dramatic reductions in mobile data pricing.

the past 6 months I've used only 50 megs of 3g data, so for me this is great.

It'd be nice if they had an unlimited plan tier still, but for me with 2 iphones I can put mine on the 15 dollar plan and the other on the 25 dollar plan :)

Saves me 20 bucks a month off my bill.

Remember those rumors that AT&T had the iPhone exclusivity deal extended because of the price they were offering? I guess this really does scream letting other carriers have the iPhone come WWDC.

You're grandfathered in. So what's your beef?

I would guess that this could also change at the drop of a hat also. Considering it's been about two months, and they pull this, I would not be surprised at all if they "update" the plans again soon.

A movie from the iTunes store is what... about 500MB. How about hulu or netflick? These companies can't be happy with the new cap plan.

Who in the world downloads a 500MB video over 3G anyway?? It's retarded ppl like this who make the 3G experience so crappy. I know nowadays a 500MB download of a movie couldn't POSSIBLY wait until you get home for wifi right?

People are missing the point.

These new terms go into effect on June 7th-wwdc day.

This means AT&T have no reason to please apple anymore.

This means that the iPhone exclusivity deal is officially over.

Verison iPhone on WWDC.

I think you're right.

If anything I'm glad these new terms will discourage ppl from watching netflix movies over 3G and bogging down the network for the rest of us.

AT&T FTL. They are crazy if they think I'm going to switch to some plan that's only $5 cheaper over my unlimited plan. I don't come close to using 1GB of data per month, but these new plans are stupid and ridiculous. An extra $15 if I go over 200MB's???? OMG, talk about a mark up. Make the 2GB $10 cheaper and we'll talk. Until then, kiss my black a...

I'm wondering if this will be a topic during the interview at WWDC. If the same person is going to perform the interview as last time (can't remember her name), I would doubt it. But it would interesting to see what Uncle Steve has to say about this. It may even be a non issue to Apple (Hope not) but we shall see.

Not exactly a business model you could get a bank loan for.

Good post.

"Entitlement" is the whine of the age.
Yup. In the early 00's I worked for a web design company. One day, the internet became extremely sluggish and all 50+ of us were going bonkers. Eventually we found the problem: The new IT guy had set up the main server to download pretty much every MP3 on Napster (that's not what got him fired though... it was something worse).

It's guys like him you can thank for the discontinuation of unlimited data plans.

Ahemm, did I misunderstand something?

The iPad is not locked to a carrier, isn't it?

So why bashing the iPad, because one carrier changes his plans? Can't you simply switch to another carrier?

Here in Europe you can get cheap plans from smaller carriers. Well, their coverage is weaker than that of the main players, but that's simply the reason for the lower price. You have to decide, what is more important for you, good overall coverage or cheap price.

And if really no carrier offers you a comparable plan to what you had at AT&T, then you won't get it with another 3G device either.

So I understand, that you might quit with AT&T, but why getting rid of your iPad ???

The iPad is locked to AT&T in the US. We're not as free a country as you think.

Good points. I think you're right. If so, bad news for AT&T. I would think they would try to maintain current pricing or slightly lower it to keep current customers. But then again........

Love It!

I don't know about you guys – but going through my statements over the last three years of iPhones+ATT, it is clear that I have never exceeded 2 GB. My wife has never exceeded 300MB.

Considering that we have TWO iPhones on the family plan, cutting our plans to 2GB and 200MB monthly would save a lovely $240 a year. What's not to love? :D:D

I am sorry for you, if you have been constantly using more than 2GB/month and feel screwed.

But I do think they should have offered unlimited data for the tethering option by charging additional $20, i.e. $45/month.

You just said it yourself, you don't even go over 1GB so what are you complaining about? It's like the word unlimited is what does it for you. And don't forget... these aren't plans you can switch. They're prepaid and unless you have it recurring and don't cancel you will get the 2GB upon purchasing a data plan again.

only if you continue to buy it every month, once you turn off 3G (which I think was the big selling point of the 3G not being contracted for the iPad) you can't get it back basically locking you into a contract with no termination fee.

Where did you find that information? It sounded like if you start getting unlimited on the ipad, you're grandfathered in and can continue on a month to month basis getting the unlimited.

I own an iPad already. If I go one month without 3G, will I be able to go unlimited the following month? I'm confused.
