Save us Apple! We need you to be a cell provider! They screw YOUR customers, they refuse to push YOUR phone, how much more are you going to take before you throw us a life line?

(Wouldn't it be awesome if Apple said, ok, now Facetime is a downloadable app! lol)

If Appel did that, AT&T's lawyers would cry monopoly/anti-trust instantly. So you can't win really.

Apple's would be smart to make FT a downloadable app. They'd also be smart by opening up the platform so app developers can incorporate facetime for various OSes.

I have a genuine question, what benefit does FaceTime have over other options such as Skype? Is there any real benefit? (ie, less bandwidth, faster connection, etc)

are there any android phones that come with skype preloaded on AT&T. now that microsoft owns Skype and will start to preload it in windows phone will AT&T block that.

Concern for their network

This makes total sense. AT&T is very concerned about traffic on their network because their network completely and utterly sucks. Quite frankly, I can't believe I defended them and stood by them for so long having experienced a network that actually functions properly since leaving them.

Verizon, by contrast, welcomes the opportunity to find ways to get people to burn through their data plans.

its built into the OS and you can just hit the facetime button on a contact. saves a few seconds. skype is a lot better because you can use it to call phones in other countries

AT&Ts argument is still flawed.

It is flawed. I purchased my unlocked iPhone from Apple by paying full price. Hence FaceTime is not preloaded app by AT&T. It is the built-in functionality of my Phone. So if they block FaceTime over cellular for me, they violate the rule.

just get the galaxy s3 and get it from the play store

Not a bad idea! Lots of free Apple apps are in the App Store – iBooks, Podcasts, Find My iPhone, Find My Friends, AirPort Utility

I know Facetime is supposed to be more integrated but still... sounds like a good workaround.

Chances are, only a small portion of users would actually get around to downloading facetime; the rest either won't be bothered or aren't even aware it exists.

So you are just turning facetime into a poor skype alternative (just like imessage is a crappier whatsapp clone).

So glad I ditched AT&T for Straight Talk. I understand it's the same network, but I'm just glad I'm not lining AT&T's pockets still. These "too big to fail" companies need to wake up.

All this fuss. Does anyone really even use FaceTim?

I use it when chatting with friends over seas. I like it a lot over Skype.

But my take on it is that they shouldn't even offer it over cellular. Any video chat should require Wifi for the sake of video and audio quality.

Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint are all terrible.

You just have to pick your poison.

Until the FCC and the US Government get involved the carriers will continue to screw their customers.

They may be technically correct, but how about sweetening the deal for existing customers instead of making us feel like two-bit whores who've suckled at the teat of "cheap" for far too long? All I ever see is "raising the fees for this, adding a cost to do that".

When will we ever see a respectable lowering of costs?

So they are going for the "technicality" argument... Facetime is preloaded so doesn't apply to the same rules?? Give me a break.

Quite. This is a classic example of finding a distinction where none exists.

Then again, maybe there's still time for Apple to split FaceTime out into a separate, downloadable app before they release iOS 6. :D

"...the carrier says that it is limiting the feature's cellular access to Mobile Share customers "out of an overriding concern for the impact this expansion may have on our network and the overall customer experience."

Data is data. I have one phone on unlimited data (3GB is the throttle point isn't it?) and another on a 3GB plan. So, I have 6GB of data. With the new plan, I'll have 6GB of data. What a load that just took off of the network. The only logic for this is that overage charges are higher on the new plans, so maybe they plan on banking off of that. Regardless, my cell bill costs more than my TV, internet, and water bills combined. For that cost, there should be no service that I'm locked out of - period.

I have a genuine question, what benefit does FaceTime have over other options such as Skype? Is there any real benefit? (ie, less bandwidth, faster connection, etc)

I have no idea. For me - none. My friends/family all use Tango because we have different phones and enjoy making calls wherever/whenever without worrying about having a wifi connection.

its built into the OS and you can just hit the facetime button on a contact. saves a few seconds. skype is a lot better because you can use it to call phones in other countries

Going into contacts is just as easy as going into Tango and hit the video button. Yes - FT is baked into the OS - but I don't see that as a big advantage or time saver at all.

Skype and Tango are both great.

You may send what ever data packets you like into the public RF spectrum. It's when it gets to AT&T's antennas and other infrastructure that they can ignore them.

Not even close to being true.

I think I know what you were trying to say, but what you actually said is different.

Is facetime really an application or a feature built into the OS? Isn't that open for interpretation? It's not like the iPod Touch or iMacs where there is an application to open.

With T-Mobile bringing back unlimited, unthrottled data, AT&T had better hope that T-Mobile doesn't land the next iPhone. Otherwise, they will start losing customers in droves.
