AT&T Says iPhone 4 to Be Initially Available Only in Black?

ModMyi reports that it has received a purported internal AT&T memo from a source revealing that the carrier will only be taking pre-orders for black iPhone 4 models, with white models not set to become available until "later this summer".
Apparently (see above image emailed to AT&T employees) the iPhone 4 will ONLY be available in black for pre-orders and launch. The initial lineup will be the 3G in 8GB, and the black iPhone 4 at 16GB and 32GB.

The white 16GB and 32GB iPhone 4 will be available "later this summer."

It is unclear whether such restrictions would apply only to AT&T distribution or if it is a broader issue that will result in a delay of the sale of white iPhone models from Apple and other distribution points. No reason is given for the delay.

Apple is set to begin taking pre-orders for iPhone 4 tomorrow morning, but has not specified when its site will go live to accept sales.

I hope this is At&t only, but I sense that it is not.

I'm getting black, but the misses planned on getting white.
 
If this rumor's true, I'm sure it'll be global. Heck, i really want the white one after having the black 3G for what feels like a decade now....we'll c...
 
Another curve ball; what other announcements does AT&T have up their sleeve?

This last moment thing must be the new way to roll.

I just found out that the 15.00 data plan will be exempt from FAN discounting because AT&T says it's discounted that 200mb for you already.

I doubt this is true... but if it is, I guess you'll have to go to another retailer for the white. I wanted to black one anyways

Most likely to be able to keep up with the initial demand. Instead of guessing how many white vs. black models folks were going to buy, the initial blind production run buy is all black. Once the "I have to buy one in the first 3 days or I'll die" folks have bought them then can move on to trying to figure out how to split up the production distribution. This kicks the drama of worrying about the having the right mix of inventory problem back to Apple. When it looks like a less risky problem ATT will pick it up.


It also helps delay some folks a couple of weeks. (if extremely found of white option will wait. ) More iPhone sales later doesn't hurt as long as the customer is frozen in place.
 
The infamous "later this summer". Start the debates as to what months/weeks/days constitute summer when AT&T releases later than initially thought.

No biggie though. if you want a white phone, go elsewhere.
 
This sucks for me. I hope Apple or Best Buy allows for pre-orders of the white one. I don't think I can hold out until later this summer. If not I'm getting the white Evo 4G. Oh, wait! ;)
 
Apple Only?

Maybe you have to order the white one directly through Apple because supplies are limited and they are not giving any to their resellers.
