Most likely to be able to keep up with the initial demand. Instead of guessing how many white vs. black models folks were going to buy, the initial blind production run buy is all black. Once the "I have to buy one in the first 3 days or I'll die" folks have bought them then can move on to trying to figure out how to split up the production distribution.

It also helps delay some folks a couple of weeks. (if extremely found of white option will wait. ) More iPhone sales later doesn't hurt as long as the customer is frozen in place.

I'm not sure I buy that logic.
Why would apple want to slow down sales?

2yrs ago I ended up getting a White 16GB 3G, because they had sold out of the 16GB Black 3G's at the Apple store I was at. I liked it instantly even though I was a bit dispappointed with the thought while waiting in line. This same thing would happen with this model. There are some people that would settle for the color to have the capacity.

Personally, I'd be a bit disappointed if they didn't have the White model off the bat. I'm not sure how I feel about the white front, and I really want to see both of them in hand to decide. (Only thing holding me back from preordering)

hey germans t-mobile says there wont be the white version available for pre-order.
so it is. trust the germans. xD

I'm getting black anyways but I am sure this isn't true. It would have to be a supply issue, not at&t's issue.

You guys are acting like a bunch of high school girls. Why not buy it from Apple. No one and I mean no one appreciates this drama you guys are creating. Just grow up and buy it from another seller.

Well Apple has a contract with RSH, BBY, and ATT stores to give them launch day access. Apple is in business to make money too... if they're all offering the same thing, people will go to whichever they live down the street from. If Apple has an advantage, aka selling a "limited edition" model on launch day, they still comply with their contract to allow BBY\ATT\RSH to sell on launch day, but give incentive (as if there wasn't enough already) to buy direct from Apple, meanwhile Apple reaps the benefit of people going there (aka people buying 90% margin accessories, and maybe selling a couple Macbook Pros)... everything Apple does is for a reason, and they're very strategic with this type of thing.

If this were true, I'd be happy. I always debate on whether to get white or black. I sort of like the iconic white, but I'd probably go for black.

When I was a kid, I'd agonize over which candy bar to buy, too. Livingston Chew or Fifth Avenue bar? What to do?

Try Again....

Another curve ball; what other announcements does AT&T have up their sleeve?

This last moment thing must be the new way to roll.

I just found out that the 15.00 data plan will be exempt from FAN discounting because AT&T says it's discounted that 200mb for you already.

I would call back and talk to another AT&T rep, and another, and another until you get the answer you want. When I got my Palm Treo 680 4-5 years ago they told me that data plans were not included under my FAN discount, then told me they were, then not, then that i had to get unlimited data, then that i could get the cheaper plan, etc.....

Bottom line was, nobody really knew and they were just making up answers because they didn't want to find out. Ultimately, they gave me the discount and they gave me a credit the month after they fixed it to back-discount the previous two months it took them to figure it out while they charged me full price. They even gave a little extra discount to make up for my trouble.

So I would call back if I were you. Get your discount credit. If your company negotiated a discount on data then you should be getting that discount on data.

Seems kind of odd. I mean how hard is white to make? I can't believe it's a supply issue. I think its a lazy ATT issue. They don't want to deal w/ 4 SKUs at launch. But I don't really have a fight here since I want black.

LMAO! that doesnt even make any sense. Some people will formulate any crazy scenerio in order to deflect the blame off Apple. A large corporation who has hundreds of SKU's and phones and has dealt with 3 iPhone launches does not want to deal with 4 SKUs... get off it man if this is indeed true its most likely Apple's doing.

Apple is probably having supply issues with the white models and is planning to keep them all for themselves (to sell through their online and retail stores)... notifying partners and international providers that they will not be available until after launch.

It's 100% Apple's fault.

Why else would AT&T and T-Mobile Germany not have a white one for pre order. Aren't these one of the last exclusive iPhone carriers. This wouldn't make sense. Apple just didn't make white ones.

In Germany too.

I just received a call from the german Telekom, and it's black only as well!

I was laboring over the black vs. white options this past weekend (my standard go to is all black - done).
But with the entire device (save the edges) comprised of glass, I think I may actually lean toward the white this time around as I suspect white glass hides smudges a lot better than black glass. Granted, the oleophobic coating (can you say "Corinthian leather?") does make smudge removal a relatively simple swipe (or three) of a shirt corner. Still, I'm guessing white glass hides more.

As an added bonus, the white glass, black screen (and metal sides) lends a certain Storm Trooperish aesthetic I have always enjoyed. Maybe I'll move from my Lord Vader 3GS look and towards a more Storm Trooper-y iPhone 4 vibe?

And then AT&T drops this on me.
SONOFA!

Or since T-Mobile Germany and SoftBank seem to be reporting the same thing, maybe it's a supply issue. So I think it's lazy Apple, not AT&T.

Don't most people put cases on them anyway? As a rough estimate, I'd say I see about 75% of current iPhones in cases, so I don't know why the color matters much if all you'll see is the screen.

Called 800MYAPPLE.

me: There's a few rumors that claim only black iphone 4's will be available at launch. Is this true?

rep: That is false.

me: Specifically the rumor claims that only black will be available via AT&T. Is this true?

rep: Black and white will be available, thru Apple.

Leaves it a little open-ended as to whether or not white will be available via AT&T since that was not specifically stated. But who cares. Order from :apple:. :D

I really had my heart set on the white. Hopefully, it will only be an AT&T thing. If it isn't, I'd be willing to switch it up & buy the black one instead, but only because I'm impatient. :p

I guess I will

I guess I will have to wait a few months, after having a 2 black phones, I want a white one now, black is nice, but seems to always look dirty no matter how much I clean it. :(
