that big coverage map above is for sub 6mm wavelengths (5GE) which is marginally better than 5G. If you look at their 5G+ (real 5G)coverage map, its only available in a couple huge cities.
This is not accurate. What they have announced today is real 5G NR in the 850MHz band. "5G+" is AT&T marketing name for 5G NR in the mmWave spectrum. "5GE" is really just a stupid marketing name for LTE.

Meanwhile in New Hampshire on Verizon. For the record, zero service here with AT&T (switched away 2 years ago to Verizon). I'm so sick of 'future tech' while a huge swath of the country doesn't even have 3G. I live 5 miles from Dartmouth College. Sigh. When I moved to New Hampshire from downtown San Francisco 10 years ago, I thought by now, I'd be able to use streaming music. 10 freaking years. The FCC really needs to get it's **** together and bring a nationwide 3G to everyone.

I am lucky enough to have 4G in part of my very rural home. I bought a 4G extender from Verizon and now I have 4G everywhere in the home and in about a 50 foot radius around the house. That doesn't help me when I leave home though. Most of the 45 minute drive to town is without service.

Wow... talk about sensitive.

I've had AT&T for around 15 years, but you won't see me acting like an apologist for them. USA has it pretty bad in terms of getting our dollars value for cellular service.
thanks for chiming in. If I have good service with AT&T, I'm an apologist? I suspect millions of other customers are fine with their AT&T service.

One of the perks on this forum is the ignore list. I take full advantage when I see idiotic posts or reactions. It makes browsing the forums so much better!

Oh boy... Ohhhhh boy....

You really really need to stop frequenting the wackadoodle 'science' websites and start listening to the real folks.

That's a whole load of twaddle you've posted there.

For example, we've had beamforming in routers for over 10 years now, and beamforming itself is over 100 years old.
Yep. they need $, they don't let you die that easy! No matter how bad 5G is, you will be using it 5 years from now, just deal with it and ENJOY.

Nationwide. Riiight. It’s the teal color, folks. From the company that brought you the wonderful world of “5G Evolution” (about which they also lied about stopping the misleading label). They probably also wouldn’t hesitate to call it statewide in places like IA, NB, ND, SD, and NC where there’s a pixel on two sides.

They should say, Nationwide but not in all areas.

....

5Ge is LTE Advanced... 256 QAM 4G. It is not related to 5G at all, which is the problem everyone has with the name.

5G is NR (New Radio). It can operate under 6 ghz, referred to as low band for it - Frequency Range 1 (the bands in use today for 4G, identified as n71, for example, instead of just 71). Or mmWave - Frequency Range 2 (26 ghz, 28 ghz, and 39 ghz - most definitely not 60 ghz as an earlier insane theory stated).

Yep, we used a Verizon 3G Booster than WiFi Calling came out and iMessage so now at home, I get calls & messages just fine so while at home, my life isn't any worse than most people's but once I'm out of WiFi Range (about 500 feet from the house), if the song I'm listening to isn't stored on my iPhone, it stops playing and I have to find one that's stored locally OR switch over to the radio. I also can't get a call in town then drive home or I'll lose them so I basically hang up on people and call them back when I'm home.

It is why I have such strong wifi service though. I have 6 Long Range Unifi Access points that supposedly go like 500 feet in any direction. they get pretty far..so far that all of my neighbors use my wifi. lots of retirees so I have never noticed their impact on my speed.

That doesn’t work for me. That’s like putting a hotspot at each distant end of an airport and claiming “Terminal wide WiFi! – just not in all areas.” Using that term is just a slippery marketing dodge just accurate enough to explain away when interpreted a specific manner. “West coast plus greater NY metro, so nation wide, amiright??” Exactly what I’d expect from Corporate America.

And AT&T is phasing out 3G in 2022. They say it's "to make room for newer technologies that will improve your service and experience" but will it actually? Or is it mainly a way to make people with older phones upgrade?

WHO the heck is still using a 3G only phone? That would have to be an iPhone 4S or older, a 9 year old phone.
They need the spectrum for 5G.
Im not an AT&T fan, but your comment is nonsense.

A lot of AT&T haters in here.

I’ve had their service since 2014 and they’ve always done right by me. I usually have full LTE coverage no matter where I go, even in the more rural areas I can still get a fast connection.

A couple of years ago I lived way out in the sticks where I couldn’t even get Internet service through traditional means but I was able to use my hotspot on my phone/iPad along with the unlimited plan and it got me through.

Not only that but I’ve been able to get pretty much any phone or tablet I’ve ever wanted from them without a hitch. Even during all the COVID madness I ordered the iPhone 11 and the new iPad Pro which had just come out and I had both devices within like 3 days.

Are they a perfect company? No. Are they the cheapest? Not by a long shot. But they’ve been really good in my experience and in Oklahoma they’re pretty much the dominant carrier here anyway.

I see that OKC is a 5G city too, can’t wait to try it on my iPhone 12!

Wow! Look at what appears to be a Coverage map completely filled in with blue, obviously to dupe people into thinking they’ve got 100% coverage, in 5G no less!

Who the hell supports this company by literally giving them money on a monthly basis.

Seriously hahaha. The last 3G iPhone will be 11 years old by that time.

This is absolutely real. They urgently need the spectrum that's currently occupied by 3G. Dropping 3G will also significantly simplify their core network.

or in my case I'll have no service within a 5 mile radius of my home if WiFi goes out. The reason for what they're doing is there is actually a finite amount of wireless spectrum out there. AM/FM/Cellular/HAM/CB and more all occupy different spectrums. Licenses and spectrum are control by the FCC in USA. So they say who can use what. The only way to release new wireless standards is to re-purpose old spectrum. EVDO was killed in lieu of LTE. They'll kill 1X for other stuff. They have to sunset use of spectrum for really scientific purposes..they can't just make more of it so they recycle.

Unfortunately, if you live in an area without 3G/LTE/5G service, you're SOL completely no matter if your phone is brand new or not. I buy a new iPhone every year. It has never improved my service because there is none.

Not a 3G only phone, but sometimes I’ve been dropped back to 3G signal in some areas. Probably not much anymore (I think it’s mainly 4G I’m typically falling back to lately), but will those 3G areas lose service or be switched to better service? I’m all for improvement if it’s replacing the old with new.

The 3G spectrum will be re-farmed to 4G and 5G. Service should get better since the newer systems have better spectrum efficiency.

I was about to say "Nationwide? I don't even see my city in the list." Then I saw your map. I wonder what the hold up in Nebraska and Iowa is? Sioux City, South Dakota has more 5G coverage than Nebraska for crying out loud!
Using Sioux City, NE (across river)
12,000 population.
With 5G to include the entire state as coverage towards all nationwide.

Run for the hills!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

But in all seriousness, this is awesome. I look forward to using the Overlord communication / brainwashing network.
